  1. This has become a pattern of sorts. If the Cubs say a guy has the flu, you just know his arm is hurting. Right before the '99 season, they said Wood had pnemonia or something. A few days later he was out for the year.
  2. Amen brother! It was just so damn good to see the Cubs play a good ballgame last night. Let's hope it is the start of a long winning streak!
  3. Citizens United for Baseball in the Sunshine Even bad baseball beats watching the boring NBA playoffs! (unless it's the Bulls of course)
  4. Hey, at least Sean Marshall has emerged. There have been plenty of entire summers where nothing that good happened. Hendry and Co may not be spending the dough right, but we do have the second highest payroll in the NL. Our org. has a rabid fan base and a lot of dough. Sustained success will happen for us someday soon. Until then, it is back to dwelling on the small positives like Marshall, Murton, and Cedeno. The day I stop caring about the Cubs is the day I die.
  5. The season is on life-support. If my worst fears come true and the wrist injury prevents Dlee from hitting like he can, then it is already over. If Dlee come back as good as new, then we will have to kick some major butt, but we might just get back in the race. At full strength, our pitching staff could be among the best in baseball. I like our options for playing out the season. Between Z, Maddux, Marshall, Miller, Prior, Wood, Guzman, and Hill we should be able to establish a couple of trading chips as we won't need them all next year. If we raise the white flag, 2 or 3 of those guys could yield good value and we're still left with a solid rotation and terrific bullpen. We need high OPS position players for now and the future! If we get in the race- Great, let's go for it! If we flounder- hey, I like the sheer number of pitchers we will be able to showcase. SOME playoff team would pay dearly for one of our pitchers.
  6. I don't know if this is the right time to do this, but I said as a child in the 70's that the Cubs should blow up the team and go with youngsters. (ala the Marlins 06) I wish that at some point between 1978 and today we would've done that. It seems to be the only thing we haven't tried. What if we were Florida? We would suffer for a couple of years (hey what's a couple of more years!), but when the prospects pan out we could do what Florida probably can't- sign 'em to long term contracts and fill in the gaps with high dollar proven FA's. I think that the Marlin's model would be fun, and almost assure us of fielding a real contender in a few years. I would just feel sorry for my fellow Cub fans who are getting up in years and don't have the time to wait.
  7. I may be banned for this, but I like the way Dusty is managing the club considering our circumstances. He is doing a pretty good job of in game management and is sending out non-obscene lineup cards. The guys are playing hard and seem to have each others back. Add the talent that is on the way and I think we are bound for the playoffs. We have several pitchers that NOBODY will want to face in the playoffs if they are on. One more thing, Greg Maddux used to be my least favorite athlete in the world, ever. However, a 4-0 start has him climbing back up the chart.
  8. Greg Maddux simply did not want to be a Cub. He had every opportunity to sign a fair contract with us but he didn't. On the way out the door, Maddux said that he wanted to be on a team with a chance to win. Fine. Just don't pretend that Maddux was a true blue Cubbie who was unceremoniously dumped. We tried hard to sign him and the guy dumped on us. Not the other way around. Does anyone honestly believe that Greg Maddux REALLY wanted to remain with the Cubs? With a fair deal on the table for a long, long time why didn't he?
  9. Sung to the tune of 'Davy Crockett'. Jodeee, Jodeee Davis- Catcher Extrodonaire! I'd love to hear that again.
  10. If Wrigley Co had a problem with the name Wrigley Field, they would demand that the Trib change it. Corporations only care about the bottom line. Wrigley Co loves the free advertising IMO.
  11. 'So long as the Doublemint Twins are kept off the scoreboard, I don't think the Wrigley Field name is doing the gum company much good. There's no "Wrigley Gum" - it's all Freedent, Doublemint, Extra, etc.' I disagree. Why does BASF advertise if they don't make products, they just make products better? Wrigley is a corporation and you can be sure that Wrigley Field doesn't hurt their name regognition among investers.
  12. Wrigley Field may have been named in honor of Mr. Wrigley, but at some point Wrigley's became a corporation. Commiskey and Fenway are not corporations. If we have a corp named field (which we do- Wrigley's is a corporation) we may as well get some of that corp dough IMO.
  13. Wrigley Co should pay for the naming rights or we should sell them to some other company. Wrigleys has gotten 25 years of free advertising since they sold the team to the Trib. I believe that Wrigley Field's original name was Cubs Park. We should either change it back or sell the rights and add payroll. If it will have a corporate name anyway, why not make some dough?
  14. 1. Andre Dawson 2. Babe Ruth 3. Ryne Sandberg 4. Kerry Wood 5. Ernie Banks Does anybody else think that Wood's 20K game was really a no-hitter? While I haven't watched the whole game since the day it was played, I remember being convinced that the one hit should've been scored an error on Orie.
  15. I still give Sammy the benefit of the doubt. I remember when he was with the White Sox, the Hawk and Wimparoo called him the 'Panther' because of his body type. To me, this was just the body type able to put on bulk and muscle. I remember opening day '94 (the Tuffy 3 HR day) and my friend and I were talking about how good Sammy was gonna be. He said, 'Sammy could steal 50 bases this year.' To which I replied, 'He could hit 50 HRs one of these years.' My point is that plenty of people believed that Sammy would become a big time power hitter.
  16. I don't have it handy but you should also check out Steve Goodman and Jethro Burns' version of 'Take me Out to the Ball Game.' It is pure magic. Goodman was one of the great Cub fans of all time and a great artist! RIP
  17. IIRC Murray said as the game began, 'Well the first guy up for the Expos is Casey Candele. He's no good.' Murray was a riot. I remember thinking Bill would be a great replacement for Harry. However, his acting career had a renaissonce so the booth was not really an option.
  18. I saw Sammy in June of '92, pretty much right when he joined the club. He hit a HR to tie the game against the Pirates late in the game. Sandberg later hit the game winner. It is too bad the two of them weren't teammates during their primes. Thanks for the memories Sammy!
  19. Harry will remain beloved for decades to come while Hamilton will merely be the answer to a trivia question if remembered at all. Harry made people happy. Milo makes people angry.
  20. I'm optomistic too. I think Murton will be very good and I like the pen. No reason to write off our chances just yet. I think we hang around till ASB and then pull a trade like the OP said. If so, we should at least have an exciting season and maybe make the playoffs. And if we are in the playoffs, it will be because of pitching and nobody will want to face our playoff rotation.
  21. For those interested, I believe Harry last signed off with this.- '... and God willing we will all be back next spring and maybe next year will be the year we ALL have been waiting for.' I parpaphrased the first part of the quote, but it definitely was foreshadowing. The 'maybe next... waiting for' part I am 99% sure was verbatim. Harry Caray was sheer joy.
  22. Spring training game vs Brewers in '91. Steve: 'The key to the Cubs this year is blah blah blah.' Haryy: 'Phhfft... Steve the only key I know is WHISKEY!' Also: 'That ball bounced so high in the air, I could've grabbed an ice cold bottle of Budweiser, opened it, taken a drink, and STILL called the play!' Harry was entertainment for sure.
  23. If you look at him as a corner OFer, maybe he should be on the cusp and not in the HOF. But if you look at him as a gold glove, rocket armed CFer, he is a lock with those numbers. I think he should be in based on a combination of the two. Note: I will admit to being very bias on this issue. Andre was not only my fav baseball player, he was my fav athlete of all-time, just ahead of Jordan and Sweetness.
  24. Congrats to Bruce Sutter! He was the best in the biz and deserves the HOF.
  25. Being bad has never stopped me from rooting for a team. I still root for 'em, I just don't care very much any more. Part of the reason is that I hate Steve Alford's excuses, part of the reason is that we play very boring ball, and part of the reason is that college bb has gone south IMO since most top high schoolers started skipping college a decade ago. Your team from last year being an exception to that last rule. They were one helluva fun team to watch. As far as tickets go, our arena is about half full most nights. It wasn't long ago that every game was a sellout. You shouldn't have any problem getting tix.
