  1. What? Losing one game would be a choke? Well no, the last week was a choke. What I'm saying is the odds are highly in their favor to win tonight.
  2. Thought this was interesting: http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/designated_hitter/
  3. I just got back... it was better than last year but pretty lame. And cold. When did November show up?
  4. Hmm...is it safe to assume Hoff and Ward = no Pie? It would be really stupid to have 2 lefty power bats off the bench that play the same position (poorly). 99% of the time, theres not 2 different spots in a game to have a left handed power bat pinch hit.
  5. No, I haven't heard that Carol. That is interesting. first time I've heard it as well I just want to know who went to the World Series posing as the Cubs in 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, and 1945
  6. If the Cubs beat the Dodgers, I immediately expect the Cubs to win the World Series. In fact, if the Cubs win the first game against the Dodgers, that will do a lot to get the monkey off their backs and make me feel a lot more confident. So, your two options are get swept or win world series? I'm an all-or-nothing kinda guy :)
  7. Not worthy of its own thread but: No, I haven't heard that Carol. That is interesting.

  9. The wind blowing in is a blessing. Lowe is a sinkerballer and I would be more concerned if the wind was blowing out. True. It helps Demp way more than it helps Lowe
  10. Lowe's last 5 road starts: 29.1 IP 4 ER 20 H 3 BB 3-1 1.23 ERA 0.74 WHIP Granted the teams he faced are the Nationals, DBacks, Pirates, Padres and Giants. All I'm saying is that don't expect Lowe to crap the bed tomorrow just because he's on the road. With temps falling to the low 50's and the wind likely blowing in, he could have very favorable conditions.
  11. Oh come on, it smacks of irony, but its funny. I don't know if you wrote that, but if you did, good work :)
  12. So the cubs lose this series, then? Have you ever been positive in your entire life? Of course. Just not about our ballclub. You realize we were the best team in the NL this year, right? Pessimism has little to do with records and performance. Pessimism is a frame of mind. The Cubs could have gone 162-0 and somehow due to an odd set of circumstances drew the Sioux Falls, SD little league team, and people would still be predicting their demise. Then those people are very, very dumb.

  14. I'll get my hopes up when I see the Packers lose to an iffy team. The Bucs and Cowboys are pretty good. However, this isnt the 13-3 Packers team of a year ago.
  15. Last year at the Cubs playoff game I wore a t-shirt and shorts. This year I'll probably wear long underwear and a sweat shirt. I'm smart enough to know when it goes below 60 at Wrigley, it feels like winter with the wind.
  16. Haha, the general public must think that the Bears are an awesome team, having watched them dismantle Indy on the road and then Philly. Actually, I think you're right. Many people do think we're pretty good this year. I'm not saying we aren't. They've proven a lot to me. Honestly we're talking about the Colts, Eagles, and 2 3-1 teams (Bucs and Panthers), and the Bears have either won, or held a double digit second half lead against all of them. They aren't great, but they are good. No whether good means 8-8 or good means 10-6, that remains to be seen. They still have the Jags, Titans, Saints and all our divisional games left.

  18. Yep, the White Sox would have to do some serious choking to lose this game. The Cell is not conducive to the Twins style of baseball. Their only hope is that Jon Danks sucks on 3 days rest. Danks does have a 4.73 ERA since the ASB, and in his last start he gave up 7 runs in 4 innings to the Royals, so we'll see.
  19. Wow, it seems like only yesterday when my friend and I were saying that we should let Briggs walk because we had Jamar Williams waiting in the wings.
  20. I was reading some Dodgers blog, and one sentence jumped out at me: Corey Wade? Honestly, I hadn't heard much about him. I looked up his stats. They are pretty good: 55 G 71.1 IP 51 H 15 BB 51 K 18 ER 2.27 ERA 0.93 WHIP Pretty damn good. Now look at his splits: vs. RHB - .194 .266 .340 .606 vs. LHB - .211 .243 .312 .555 Home - 1.72 ERA Away - 2.86 ERA Impressive. But is he as effective as Marmol? Let's compare... 82 G 87.1 IP 40 H 41 BB 114 K 26 ER 2.68 ERA 0.93 WHIP vs. RHB - .098 .215 .165 .379 vs. LHB - .182 .297 .371 .668 Home - 1.61 ERA Away - 4.14 ERA I've bolded the important stats. In 16 more innings, Marmol has allowed 11 less hits. The issue is of course walks. Marmol walks a lot of guys, Wade does not. But Marmol counters his control issues by striking out an amazing amount of hitters, limiting the damage they do. Against RHB, Marmol is likely the best reliever in baseball. His line against lefties isn't too shabby either. I didn't realize that Marmol had such extreme H/R splits. Considering that ballpark conditions at Wrigley are not extreme, and likely closer to neutral, I'm willing to bet its a fluke.
  21. People thought that the Cubs were better than their record suggested last year too.
  22. They're going to have to forfeit one of the games...
  23. They can do it at Kinkos. Most versions of Adobe Reader won't let you do anything with the PDFs. With the software I used when working at Kinkos, we could easily crop/separate pages of PDF documents into separate files
  24. I think BP has them around 61% For a short series, thats about as good of odds as you can get. Crazy to think, you play awesome baseball for 161 games, and then all the sudden you have a 39% chance of being eliminated within 5 games.
  25. I'll probably bite. I went last year and it was ok.
