  1. I guess I appreciate the Cubs being proactive and addressing the elephant in the room right away. It won't really appease anyone who hates the fact that the Cubs traded for this man, but at least they aren't just trying to ignore that part of the story.
  2. Well put, thanks for putting into words my overall feelings.
  3. https://twitter.com/CarrieMuskat/status/757661028339572736 Oh that makes it all better.
  4. I said this earlier but I think Chapman should be the defacto closer but used situationally in high leverage situations against LHB as needed. In those situations Rondon switches to closer. This isn't just because I'm against the trade, but is this strategy something that's way easier to pull off in theory vs reality? Obviously you want Chapman pitching the most important at bat of every game, but those moments sometimes tend to develop pretty quickly. Maddon is the best in the game and I'm happy it's him trying to figure out the best way to use him, but you can't just have him throwing on the side for the last 4 innings of every close game. No you can't, but the concept of a LOOGY is hardly a new idea. Not that we would use him as a LOOGY, it would more likely be a few batters. I dunno, maybe that's the wrong way to look at it, but I really want a guy that can come in to shut down lefties. Particularly if we play someone like the Nats, whose 2 best hitters are left handed.
  5. I'd be very shocked if they only ever use in him the 9th inning/save situations. Especially in the playoffs I said this earlier but I think Chapman should be the defacto closer but used situationally in high leverage situations against LHB as needed. In those situations Rondon switches to closer. Technically he could be used in all high leverage situations, but the Cubs have multiple guys that kill righties so i think its ok to save Chapman for the final 3 outs in those situations but would be willing to do either. I just think Chapman wants to close and if we want to resign him this might be a good compromise: OPS against (very basic stat I know) vs. RHB Edwards: .352 (VSSS) Rondon: .379 Strop: .445
  6. Similar to the discussions we're having: -Did the Cubs overpay for a rental -I wouldn't want the Cardinals to acquire a guy with his background -Wish he wasn't coming back to the NL -Guess the Cubs are completely going for it  haha I knew someone would pounce on that line.

  8. Lefties vs. Chapman for his career .123/.234/.155/.389, 1 HR allowed (the immortal Luke Scott, in 2011)
  9. So glad Chicago didn't get it, but still want to mock the IOC for picking Rio over Chicago due to how things are turning out.
  10. I mean is it really that unbelievable that even tho they didn't extend him now, they have an understanding and are in the ballpark on a contract once the offseason gets here? No its perfectly possible, just not as likely as him having a bad source or no source at all. An hour ago he was saying the Cubs WILL NOT (yes he used Caps) do the deal without an extension and that they were actively negotiating. Now after mainstream reporters come out saying that there was not really any discussions about an extension, he all the sudden says 'yeah but like the cubs totally feel confident he will resign' even though he's a Boras client and will probably be positioning him to get in a bidding war and end up with the largest contract for a relief pitcher ever.
  11. thought you were going to vet better. wtf? Hey this guy had a legit looking blog not just some rando. I'm sorry I won't post any more crazy rumors, I've finally learned my lesson.
  12. My guess is there is no way he's active today, but I'm sure he will be available tomorrow.
  13. Feel bad for calling this guy quasi legit earlier. Holy backtracking and trying to save face https://twitter.com/wildermind_aeh/status/757622915319857153
  14. Yeah the trickle down effect is Travis Wood, Trevor Cahill and Justin Grimm are now essentially mop up guys. Which is pretty incredible because in the last 16 months or so all 3 have been incredibly effective at various points. Cahill (or Grimm) might not even have a spot in the pen right now with no injuries. Chapman, Rondon, Strop, Edwards, Wood, Nathan, Montgomery and then either Cahill or Grimm. And that's with a 13 man pitching staff, otherwise they both don't have a spot (if Nathan fails that changes things a little).
  15. LMAO "terrific" is a bit of an exaggeration for a guy with a .322 SLG in AA
  16. Makes sense being a Boras client and all. Still not a huge fan of making this deal w/o one
  17. Willy is ready [tweet]https://twitter.com/noslliw19/status/757610624784277504[/tweet]
  18. #ThatsOurDerwood mocking derwood is fun, but that's not exactly what I'd take to the bank as "news" Multiple national baseball journalists reporting the deal has been completed isn't news?
  19. literally two posts up #ThatsOurDerwood
  20. Guesses on lineup with DH and likely no Russell (per maddon's comments yesterday)? My guess: Fowler, CF (S) Bryant, LF ® Rizzo, 1B (L) Zobrist, 2B (S) Contreras, DH ® Heyward, RF (L) Baez, SS ® Montero, C (L) LaStella, 3B (L) If Russell was playing, switch him out with Baez. LaStella in because he's been hitting well and we're facing a RHP
  21. [tweet]https://twitter.com/wildermind_aeh/status/757603704555999238[/tweet] This dude is a blogger and has been "reporting" throughout. Not sure his legitimacy, but seems quasi legit at first glance. Anyways, he's sticking with the 'Deal is done but Cubs will only move forward with extension' story
  22. What is the pen looking like now? (positions might vary depending on game situation of course) CL - Chapman 8th - Rondon 7th - Strop 6th - Edwards LHRP - Montgomery LHRP - Wood RHRP - Nathan/Grimm 13th pitcher - Grimm/Nathan There is no need to declare Chapman the Closer. It should be purely by situation whether Chapman or Rondon pitches the 9th, and I'm pretty sure that is how Joe will handle it. Hence why I put the disclaimer up. I said earlier if Harper comes up in the 7th with 2 on in a playoff game, I want the guy who has held LHB to an OPS under .400 in his career. In that case Rondon can slide to CL
  23. What is the pen looking like now? (positions might vary depending on game situation of course) CL - Chapman 8th - Rondon 7th - Strop 6th - Edwards LHRP - Montgomery LHRP - Wood RHRP - Nathan/Grimm 13th pitcher - Grimm/Nathan
  24. Also I'm getting sick of seeing people say "would Chapman have helped against the Mets last year?" I completely agree that if other parts of the Cubs team collapse in the playoffs, Chapman will not help, but the point is to put yourself in the best position to win. Chapman does that.
