  1. Yes. When Garrioch made the comp I was all "wtf man" and then I watched some of the Youtube stuff with that in mind and boom it's right there. The guy is like some kind of composite OF, thankfully constructed mostly of CFs past and present. Not worried about the leg kick...He strikes me as the kind of player who will make adjustments. Albert Almora - Smokescreen?
  2. That was Len and Bob right? Those guys are going to get so much love when the Cubs are a good team and they keep working together. I hope when the Cubs Network happens they take the booth. You know the Cubs had two pretty good teams, including one that just pounded on the opposition in 2008, while Len and Bob were here, right? That said, yes, Len and Bob are awesome. I'm still trying to figure out what the relevance of the first part is. Is pretty good a standard or something?
  3. While also using it incorrectly I also didn't mean it seriously. It's just a fun word, smarmy. There is a difference, and I feel the profile thing is closer to the issue of him as a 3 hitter. I think it forces him to try to be something he's not. That could have some kind of negative effect or it could not, but either way I'm not a fan.
  4. Really? The best you have is repeating a point that's been made multiple times before you made it and then dropping the mic with a "keep up?" Real smarmy...reeeeaal smarmy. MY point was that he did an excellent job, a really excellent job, playing spark plug last year. I'm ancient so I think the third spot should go to a more well rounded and more mature hitter, which is not Castro. I also think it might throw his game off or more likely just isn't his game. Completely understand if it sounds like noise because, well it probably is, but I like him better in the two hole now and for a long time after.
  5. I don't mind him thinking he has to be a spark plug for the lineup.
  6. Nobody likes to give FAs the years or money they get. Plus, name one thing you read that actually said that. That's got to be nearly impossible to do unless you build your own pitching staff or sign the John Lackeys and AJ Burnetts of the FA market. Maybe if they trade for the pitcher...Garza could get 5 years if/when they resign him.
  7. Castillo/Clevenger is fine with me if they trade Soto. I'd prefer they upgrade the OF and rotation first, then probably 2B, which is where the Stephen Drew idea might work.
  8. That was Len and Bob right? Those guys are going to get so much love when the Cubs are a good team and they keep working together. I hope when the Cubs Network happens they take the booth.
  9. Hm didn't know Simpson threw the other day. Did he manage to limit the walks or runs to go along with the K's (HA!)? I hope Beeler picks it up because I like to think he's an interesting BOR arm.

  11. you're still committing to spend that money can we really pair that with any meaningful signings on the offensive side? Yes...or I should say, most likely, yes. Upton or a trade for...someone.
  12. we're seeing that you can have Halladay, Hamels and Cliff Lee and go sub-.500 through 45 games if your offense is bad enough if we blow all our money on Hamels this offseason, we're likely to be in that situation for next season How much is all?
  13. It would be, but getting Hamels is a huge longshot. I HEARD HE'S FROM SOCAL Who's going to stop the big bad Dodgers now?
  14. Guys who can be gotten from clubs for next to nothing whenever we need them are literally the definition of 0 WAR. You're right. But I'm talking about the next level up. Players who are undervalued by their club because of limited upside, or being blocked by better players, or being out of options. They tend to get waived or traded for very little. You don't always have those types of players available to you, but they are available so often that if you are considering a free agent, it would be relatively difficult for you not to be able to find a very cheap alternative that can be a little better than replacement level. So like a Nick Swisher circa 2008 type? David Ortiz circa whatever year that was? Too much to look/ask for? Any idea who could be one of those guys this year? I can't think of one...Travis Snider gets thrown out alot but no one knows the price...This is the type of move this new FO should be significantly better at finding than the past one (does Ramirez count as one of those moves?).
  15. I'll also take Colby Lewis over Marcum, who I can't understand the infatuation for. OK, I can understand the infatuation I just don't care for it. Lewis does have a better chance at getting resigned by his team.
  16. All of this talk about Cespedes' contract that we wouldn't give him and you think the Cubs are going to give Hamels the 7 year/$150 million contract he's seeking. Proven MLB ace level talent >>> Lamest YouTube workout video of all time (of all time!) They didn't pass on Cespedes because he was out of the Cubs' general price range. He was out of the range of what they wanted to give him, big difference. Didn't they want more years/same money?
  17. Speaking of Buxton here's fluff piece from SI's Albert Chen: There's a story about how he scored from second on a sac fly. Psh i did that once and I was like the 10 fastest runner for my HS baseball team. I buy that there's power there. I just think they're comparing him to the wrong Upton. He sounds like BJ pre-shoulder injury. Another guy who sounds like my kind of CF prospect...I think I'm joining Tim on the "[expletive] bitches, pick Buxton" wagon or whatever he calls it. 18. Dallas Beeler doesn't walk anyone (actually setting a career high 2 per 9 this year), but wow on the K rate and not in a good way. He's got 21 in 49 IP, which can only be rounded up to 4 per 9 (3.9). He's also given up 68 hits in his 49 innings, and he's been one of the easiest starters to get hits on in the system (10.7 per 9 for his career in the minors). I know sinkerballers tend to have inflated hit totals in the minors due to the lesser defense and infields, but I'm still a little disappointed. Lets change that...Doesn't he throw 92-93 with his sinker? Doesn't he have a good slider as well? What's going on? Am I confusing him with someone (Whitenack)? Does Simpson throw today after Searle?
  19. Speaking of awesome pitching this morning, potential future Cubs ace Cole Hamels on the mound this year: 62 IP / 50 H/ 16 R/ 15 ER (love only one unearned run so far, random)/ 5 HR/ 13 BB/ 66 K/ 2.61 FIP/ 2.89 xFIP Not getting as many groundballs as last year (52.3 vs 42.7%), but he's also getting more swinging strikes (11.3 vs 13%) and again killing it on first pitch strikes. Just saying if they sign this guy, Shark is real, and Garza sticks around suddenly they have one of the better top threes in the league, with possibly plenty of viable 4-5 options (Wood, Volstad, maybe resign Dempster, maybe McNutt shows up, and so on). Make it happy Tanny! Er wrong team...Ricketts/Theo/Hoyer!
  20. I would like to think that the Hendry regime (and the Cubs organization) learned to manage pitch counts on a young starter after Wood AND Prior. Unfortunately after the Prior/Z wave they really only pushed out guys like Rich Hill and Randy Wells so we never really got to see if anything changed. So far this year Shark has topped 110 once and thrown at least 110 twice. Once in his first start and the other in the White Sox start. I don't think he struggled at all in either start, and in the 16 innings he threw in them he walked 2 (threw 79 and 78 strikes). Still say 160-ish is probably the number, but the fact that we're not a playoff team, he is surprisingly efficient, he's 27 and not 22, and he's such a good athlete makes me comfortable to go as high as 175 maybe even 180. Really depends on how they handle him over the course of the year, and I think Sveum is doing a fine job there.
  21. Random number....160 in the regular season + playoffs? Definitely something that will be interesting to monitor. He's big, a little older, his velocity is easy, and he's been surprisingly efficient with his pitches and pitch counts. Sveum definitely has been careful, which I really like. Last night I think he threw 90 and off the top I don't think he's topped 110, if that high.
  22. Starlin Castro and in a couple of years the badass Javier Baez. Shark is awesome. I love how all of a sudden he has these easy mechanics. It's been years in the making and the payoff is looking great.
  23. It appears that either CC or PriortoTheo hacked Nuts&Gum's account. It's because I'm going crazy, but I laughed. This qualifies you to write for my new temporarily favorite show.
  24. Well the first two picks might make Winston possible.
  25. I think we should worry/think about less where that prospect ranks and more on how good he actually is. The Yankees have taken advantage of this for years because they know people pay attention to rankings and not context more often than not (my theory anyway). They always seem to pay well in prospects, the league is littered with ex-Yankee prospects, but few if any are the stars they were expected to be as Yankees (Mike Lowell and then...Jake Westbrook?). So sure, he's one of the 5 best prospects. He's also been in their system for 6 years, hasn't made his mechanics any more consistent, and that's helped maintain poor command and control of otherwise nasty stuff. Being the Yankees, they can keep him around forever and when he's useful promote the hell out of the fact he's from NYC or they can trade him to get what they need from a team that wants an upside arm who needs some tinkering. They can afford to do either one...they'll pick the option that helps them out the most when they want the help. One day, the Cubs will operate on that level. Bringing up where a prospect ranks is a nice way of not talking about his flaws IMO. Really I'd like to take someone they really like like Angelo Gumbs, who could be their next Cano in a couple years.
