  1. Chad Qualls had an ERA above 7 last year and netted the Rays a supplemental pick. Brad Hawpe was released by the Rockies with a month left in the season. The Rays picked him up, paid him ~75K for 46 replacement level PAs and netted a supplemental pick.
  2. Imagine if the Pirates and Royals didn't essentially get skipped in the 2nd round this year as punishment for not having good enough free agents on their team.
  3. He was physically incapable of playing 1B by that point.
  4. Because when you're talking Hall of Fame you're discussing their spot in baseball history. If the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field then it needs to be held against him. You can't assume "the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field". That isn't fair. I can certainly do it with people for whom the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field.
  5. LFs have to perform at a much higher offensive level because they're relatively worthless with the glove. DHs are literally worthless defensively, therefore they should have to perform at absurd levels to be HOF-worthy.
  6. Because when you're talking Hall of Fame you're discussing their spot in baseball history. If the DH is the only thing keeping the guy on the field/stopping them from being an abomination in the field then it needs to be held against him.
  7. I don't think Ortiz could've stayed healthy in the field. Thomas and Thome both would have about 3-4 seasons chopped off their careers. When Philly was trading Thome they were only looking at AL teams because he was incapable of playing 1B at that point.
  8. Thome belongs, but he added a lot of counting stats due to the luxury of having a DH. He's sitting at ~1700 H and 430 HRs without those DH years.
  9. As I said earlier, if we're inducting, no questions asked, every guy clearly better than the worst, we're going to have to add 200 guys pretty much immediately.
  10. Eyeballing it, I don't see an advantage to big or small market teams. The system certainly needs to be overhauled in some fashion when Rafael Soriano is worth the same compensation as Cliff Lee.
  11. The general flow of free agents is away from smaller teams and toward bigger teams, making the net effect bigger on smaller teams. Additionally, there aren't a lot of ways for a smaller market team to win. Bigger teams have all sorts of flexibility. Smaller teams, who actually try, would be more dependant on that flow back of comp picks. 2010 Supplemental picks Kaleb Cowart (Angels-1) - Pick from Mariners as compensation for Free Agent Chone Figgins Michael Foltynewicz (Astros-1) - Pick from Tigers as compensation for Free Agent Jose Valverde Kolbrin Vitek (Red Sox-1) - Pick from Braves as compensation for Free Agent Billy Wagner Cameron Bedrosian (Angels-1) - Pick from Red Sox as compensation for Free Agent John Lackey Michael Kvasnicka (Astros-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Jose Valverde Aaron Sanchez (Blue Jays-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Marco Scutaro Matt Lipka (Braves-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Mike Gonzalez Bryce Brentz (Red Sox-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Billy Wagner Taylor Lindsey (Angels-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Chone Figgins Anthony Ranaudo (Red Sox-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Jason Bay Ryan Bolden (Angels-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent John Lackey Asher Wojciechowski (Blue Jays-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Rod Barajas Drew Vettleson (Rays-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Gregg Zaun Taijuan Walker (Mariners-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Adrian Beltre Nick Castellanos (Tigers-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Brandon Lyon Luke Jackson (Rangers-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Ivan Rodriguez Seth Blair (Cardinals-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Mark DeRosa Peter Tago (Rockies-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Jason Marquis Chance Ruffin (Tigers-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Fernando Rodney Michael Olt (Rangers-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Marlon Byrd Tyrell Jenkins (Cardinals-1s) - Supplemental Pick for loss of Free Agent Joel Pineiro Todd Cunningham (Braves-2) - Pick from Orioles as compensation for Free Agent Mike Gonzalez Brandon Workman (Red Sox-2) - Pick from Mets as compensation for Free Agent Jason Bay Justin Nicolino (Blue Jays-2) - Pick from Red Sox as compensation for Free Agent Marco Scutaro 2009 A.J. 12. It's pretty much assumed the NCAA will never use the death penalty again after seeing what happened to SMU.
  13. Maybe I'll take a longer look at it after work, but my recollection was that the big market teams benefitted more because they had the bigger name free agents. (Some possibly coming over via trade from those small market teams. On top of it, if you have the #1 draft pick in a given year, it's unlikely you've got any A or B free agents to gain compensation from. So now you have the #1 pick in the draft, and rather than your 2nd round pick being #31 overall, your 2nd round pick is #61.
  14. Maybe you shouldn't have cheated.
  15. Big market teams don't lose free agents? Draft pick compensation is more helpful to the big markets than the small.
  16. In just the past decade the Cubs have suffered through Todd Hundley, Moises Alou, Milton Bradley, and whoever you want to blame for the Steve Stone stuff. The effect on attendance has been zero. There is no reason to think Carlos Zambrano is the tipping point for fans. ETA: Forgot about the demonization of Sosa ETA: Do Latroy Hawkins and Jacque Jones count?
  17. It has no other redeeming qualities. Even its promos irritate me. Exactly. Not having Cubs games on WGN has sucked for me. Not everybody gets a job where their favorite sports team is located. I get to watch the occasional WGN night game and once in a while a Sunday Night game. I think I've seen maybe 5 or 6 games on TV in the past 3 years. MLBTV I've been tempted, but worry about A)Blackout rules and B) My internet connection SUCKS. We have a very old infrastructure that needs updated badly. They're slowly making headway, but until then, I usually lose connection about every 10-15 minutes. I feel like I'm in 1995. You shouldn't be concerned with blackout rules in St. Louis. All you'll have to put up with is Cardinals announcers during Cubs/Cards games.
  18. It is a different time and place from when WGN helped them draw in a nationwide audience. Exposure in a starved market is how they capitalized on that issue. But that era is over. Keeping them on WGN isn't just a hit to the short-term bottom line, it's bad for long-term business. The nationwide presence is there. And it's not going anywhere, unless they just lose every season. Would anybody actually watch WGN if it weren't for the Cubs? Bulls. And for the godforsaken of the world, Blackhawks. Strike that, reverse it.

  20. Looks like a slightly better version of the offensive lines I'd put together when we'd do fantasy drafts in college.
  21. I would bet that if you had a who would you want to leave first poll between those 3 Z would win for better or for worse. Right now maybe, but the mind of a meatball can only think clearly for so long. Take that poll on October 1st, and I'm guessing Hendry and Quade run away with it.
  22. Yeah, but how can you secure another home run hire like Frank Haith this late in the game?
  23. A lot of people gave up on the NBA in the early 2000s. Why did those other fans give up if they didn't have to suffer through the irreparable horror of watching Ron Artest get angry in their team's laundry?
  24. This is a much bigger issue now than it was during the great 2nd round dynasty of the 90s Pacers.
