  1. I've brought it up before, but if they were the only buyer willing to do this, don't you think that's a huge trump card vs having to bid against 4 or 5 others (or whatever number it was)? and maybe they knew they didn't have the wherewithal to outbid those others on an even playing field. who knows? (certainly not me, if it isn't obvious) They paid ~1/3 what Guggenheim did for the dodgers 3 years later on a true open market. My recollection is there were billion dollar bids being discussed for the cubs as well. Without the structuring as is, the ricketts don't own the cubs
  2. I'm fully with the thought that Ricketts anticipated just about everything breaking a different way. -He expected the city to help finance renovations and expected them to allow them to do lost whatever they want with it. -He expected cubs fans to show up no matter what crappy product was put on the field -He expected Theo to be able to come in and make the team good almost instantly on spite of the financial restrictions he gave him. And of course none of this to excuse his ownership. You enter into an agreement on really dumb assumptions then you don't get a pass, and you certainly don't get my benefit of the doubt going forward. For all I know this doofus is expecting the all prospect roster to make its debut some time in late 2015 helping to roll those savings into renovations and other things daddy won't pay for.
  3. So my question is what makes wittenmeyer so negative while Brett is so positive? Is it cynicism vs optimism? Disliking ricketts on a personal level vs liking him? Not getting the entire story? I'll take the easy way out and guess that it's a combination of the 3 factors AND that the truth is somewhere in the middle of their viewpoints. Not that I don't trust that Brett is quite a bit smarter than Wittenmeyer, but on the other hand hand gordo had the information first. And what exactly have the other writers in this town been doing to not utter a word about this?
  4. I do not understand what they have accomplished in spite of limitations. Kind of a loaded statement. The organization is unequivocally in a better position right now than it was in 2009. Even with the understanding that its easier to build one with high draft picks. But is that an "accomplishment?" They could've traded everyone away after 09 and racked up top 5 picks and the organization would be in an even "better position"
  5. Here I was hoping you would be the one to pick it apart (seriously) with some feedback Unfortunately leveraged buyouts and their ilk aren't my area of financial analysis. That coupled with the pure size of the piece made my head spin a bit. My first take reaction is a concern that 2019 is when the payroll will be back to where it was in the past as MLB salaries continue to balloon
  6. http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/03/19/the-chicago-cubs-financial-story-the-payroll-the-debt-and-the-syncing-of-baseball-and-business-plans/ Debt structure and buyouts isn't really my area of expertise, so would appreciate others opinions outside of the usual "best blog ever" going on in the comments there. Seems thorough, but Brett's shift towards FO mouthpiece over the last year leave me somewhat...leery?
  7. What no update on how youre gambling tonight?
  8. I've tried 5 times now but still don't quite get. There are people who will tell you, even now, that a large portion of the Cubs reduced payroll is going to things like scouting, player development, infrastructure, etc. when it would be really hard to come up with a way for this stuff to even make a small dent in that money. This crazy computer that practically takes up an entire room is one of the most insane things they could have dreamt of buying that fits within that realm (outside of a new building/facility or something) and it still costs less than a decent player pickup off the scrap heap. i bet all those people are at bleacher nation There's quite the supercomputer bukkake going on over there in response to Brett's made up speculation
  9. Pearl isn't a human being
  10. Daniel Lockhart is a deep sleeper in the sense that he puts up numbers like somebody in a coma
  11. They'll just pull some of these out of storage... http://delusionalcubsfan.com/wp-admin/images/harry-caray/cub-fan-bud-man-trading-card.jpg Great them we'll be sued by Duchie so she can bleed a few more dimes out of Harry's corpse
  12. Well, there's the violations at Tennessee, too. That's kind of vital to the backstory of what a douche he is. Those Tennessee violations happen at every single program multiple times per year. He got caught and lied is basically the only difference. And then told his recruits to lie. Probably just a one time thing though
  13. Tom ricketts is just going to wander the concourse wearing a signboard
  14. Well, there's the violations at Tennessee, too. That's kind of vital to the backstory of what a douche he is. It's also why in spite of it all I'm an Aaron Craft fan
  15. At least I can watch espn2 halftime again
  16. Being 100% serious I don't think we'd be able to fit prices salary into our 2015 budget
  17. The AA guys are being held down until they're no longer super 2s
  18. NBA will punish them for tanking by having them "draw" the 4th overall pick in the lottery Unless they win the lottery then it was fixed to give big market philly a top star. Rest assured it was definitely fixed no matter what because dumbass reasons
  19. Well yeah that's a bigger crowd than attended many games down the stretch last year
  20. I really wanted jerry Mathers to be hilariously wrong on the national stage yet again.
  21. If digger is saying it it's almost certainly wrong. The 2nd to last possession was awful bit how do you rip him after taking Michigan to a wide open 6 footer away from a win
  22. Maybe they're make ups for giving 2 free throws on a pass to the perimeter
  23. Holy [expletive] I was joking are you [expletive] kidding me??!!!
  24. Now just because stauskas was passing the ball for somebody else to shoot, that's still continuation right? I mean somebody was going to shoot it
  25. Hey ugly michigan walk on you're an ugly Michigan walk on
