  1. Ryno coming back seems to be picking up steam. The article also mentions Epstein speculation. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/7981592-419/double-play-for-cubs-clock-is-ticking-on-ryne-sandberg-theo-epstein.html "Sources both in Chicago and Philadelphia say Cubs ownership wants to reconcile with their estranged Hall of Famer, one disastrous Cubs year since Sandberg lost out on the team’s managerial job to Mike Quade and left the organization to manage the Phillies’ Class AAA team". ‘‘I don’t know what else he could do,’’ said Pat Gillick, senior advisor to the Phillies’ president and GM, and a Hall of Fame general manager. ‘‘I think he had a fairly successful run over with Chicago and he did a great job with us here. And he’s had playing skills. So if anybody else wanted something on his resume, it would be maybe that he was a major league coach. Myself, I don’t think he needs to take that stuff. I think he’d make somebody a fine manager.’’
  2. No. Not that. What do their successful years have in common? Go on, tell me. Starts with Y, ends with ANKEES. That seemed too obvious. But really what you're saying is that a manager does not make a difference. If that's the case, why not Sandberg?
  3. You just mentioned Joe Girardi and Joe Torre. Aside from first names, what do they have in common? They were catchers, so what? No. Not that. What do their successful years have in common? Go on, tell me.

  5. And years of managing in the minors really helped out Joe Girardi. Oh, wait, he didn't manage in the minors, either.
  6. Just for reference, Joe Torre had zero years managing a minor league team. That's terrific. He was a catcher and this isn't 1977 and didn't have Sandberg's track record of asinine beliefs in smallball and "playing the game the right way." Yes, because playing the game the right way has no business in baseball. I like the teams that throw to the wrong base, etc. Oh, and what does Torre being a catcher have to do with it?

  8. I hope they don't want him gone. I hope they want to keep him away from Chicago. I hope Ricketts isn't dumb enough to push for Sandberg and the new GM is smart enough to find the much better candidates for the job. Ok, so let me get this straight. So you say you hope a hall of fame baseball guy and an organization that has been a beast in the NL wants him enough to stay with them, which to me is a ringing endorsement of Sandberg but he is not good enough to manage the Cubs? Ok.
  9. "Yes, yes. Please take this man who took a crap minor league to the playoffs away from us". Yes, yes, taking a minor league team to the playoffs is some sort of accomplishment that the Mike Quade's of the world could never dream of achieving. Pat Gillick knows a thing or three about baseball and he basically hired him. Hmm, pretty strong endorsement to me. As a AAA manager. So what? You seem to thing after one year they want him gone, which is a joke after what he did with that bunch. He has also been linked to the big league job once Charlie retires, but Charlie is staying on a few more years now.

  12. Yeah, seriously Albert, nobody in the history of baseball has received a 10-year contract. In fact, throughout all of professional sports there has never been anything even resembling a 10-year contract. All-Star, more like All-Delusions-Of-Grandeur. Pshaw. He is going to be 32. Give me Prince all day over him.
  13. "The veteran all-star is seeking a 10-year contract, the source told USA Today". LOL! Ok, Albert.
  14. The Cubs have never and will never invest 200M on one player, nor should they. Pujols will breakdown midway through whatever ridiculous contract he gets. The Cubs have a fairly long history of giving out the biggest or among the biggest contracts in baseball. Going back to Sandberg they made him the highest paid player in the game. They were prepared to make Hampton the highest paid player before giving the huge money to Sosa. Since then they have gone huge on Soriano and Zambrano. The specific $200m number is a pointless fact, since there haven't been too many of those guys to pretend the Cubs have a fear of doing such things. Well, Pujols will command that and has already turned down the Cardinals. And people seem to forget that he will be 32 before next season even begins. I will take Prince at a smaller price.

  16. Been a good minor league manager as well.
  17. More from the Rogers article: One of the minor leagues' worst teams the last three years, the Phillies' Triple-A team won 22 more games in 2011 than '10 and then beat the Pawtucket Red Sox in the first round of the playoffs before the Columbus Clippers eliminated them Friday night.
  18. From Phil Rogers: Sandberg, whom Hall of Fame executive Pat Gillick vetted for the job, drew effusive praise from Phillies' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. for his work. Sandberg has managed five minor league seasons, and delivered only one losing record in his four with the Cubs. He took Double-A Tennessee to the Southern League championship series in 2009 and went 82-62 with Triple-A Iowa in 2010. Some in Philadelphia believe he's a likely successor to Charlie Manuel as the Phillies' manager — just as many in Chicago thought he would get the job that went to Mike Quade last fall. But Manuel plans to manage at least another two years, and Amaro expects a major league team to nab Sandberg before then. "Ryne has been outstanding,'' he said. "It's hard for me to find enough superlatives when I talk about what he has done there. … He's a Hall of Famer who doesn't act like a Hall of Famer. "I think he understands the importance of what he has done in the game. I also think he's very humble about it. The players really liked and enjoyed playing for him. They were motivated to play for him.''
  19. Well, lets not forget who else has been rumored to join the Cubs from the Phillies organization. The dots seem to be getting connected here. And we all saw how true those rumors turned out to be. Gillick would be joining the Cubs after the season if it happens.
  20. I really think Sandberg is getting the job. Something tells me that Ricketts has his GM picked and that Ryno is the man he wants. This is just my opinion. Ricketts has done all of this as he promised when Hendry was let go, behind the scenes and without much comment.
  21. 5 years is not enought time? And how can you get experience without getting a shot? What else does he need to do? Erase the last several years worth of old timey baseball things he has said. What do you mean?
  22. 5 years is not enought time? And how can you get experience without getting a shot? What else does he need to do?
  23. Well, this may be true. However, Ricketts is a business man and a Cubs fan to boot. He loves Sandberg and he knows the fans love him. He has an angry fan base and he knows a move like this will appease 80% of them. Add Prince to this and he sells out every game. Signing a manager, even Sandberg, isn't going to be enough to bring people to the game. Managers can't make a team win. Good players and winning games are what bring the most people out. You want a good GM to bring in and develop good players. Telling your GM who they have to hire as manager isn't a smart way to bring in a good GM. I agree. However, go to a Cubs convention, mention Sandberg's name and see the reaction. He is absolutely loved here. Ricketts knows this and Ryno has won in the minors over and over again.
