  1. Uhhhh link? Made me laugh when I read it. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/10/04/red_sox_should_hold_out_for_big_package_for_theo_epstein/
  2. If the Red Sox are seriously going to ask for Castro or Garza for this as the Globe suggests, they can keep Theo.

  4. http://www.fox43.com/sports/baseball/phillies/mc-sandberg-column-0921-20110921,0,2590343.column And me wanting Sandberg as manager has nothing to do with the fact he played for the Cubs and is a 'sexy' choice. If he was sitting at home and doing nothing all these years, I'd say why are we even considering him? The fact remains that his players respect him and he has them busting their ass. He is on mulltiple teams short list to manage this year and that should tell you a lot. He gets the most out of them and he has won at the minor league level. He has earned his promotion and whether he get it here or another place, he will get it. To dismiss him because of what he says in a hall of fame speech or because he says he wants the game played the right way is short-sighted at best.
  5. I don't even know what this means. Unlike Martinez, Sandberg doesn't have significant experience working with someone like Maddon. Sandberg hasn't really worked under anyone (as a player or as a minor league manager) worth a damn when it comes to coaching/managing like Martinez has with Maddon. Sandberg also never had a reputation as any kind of coach or leader when he was a player, so unless you're looking at his scanty time managing in the minors without anyone to really learn from I'm not sure what he's "done" that means he deserves or needs to manage. Yet, somehow, he has the respect from his players and manages to win games. So if you sit next to a manager it makes you more qualified than someone who actually has managed? Half the kids he would come in contact with are guys he managed before. One of the minor leagues' worst teams the last three years, the Phillies' Triple-A team won 22 more games in 2011 than '10 and then beat the Pawtucket Red Sox in the first round of the playoffs before the Columbus Clippers eliminated Lehigh Valley Friday night. Says Ruben Amaro Jr: "Ryne has been outstanding,'' he said. "It's hard for me to find enough superlatives when I talk about what he has done there. … He's a Hall of Famer who doesn't act like a Hall of Famer. "I think he understands the importance of what he has done in the game. I also think he's very humble about it. The players really liked and enjoyed playing for him. They were motivated to play for him.'' Amaro gives Sandberg credit for paying his dues in learning how to manage.
  6. So, basically, you have no clue on who should manage. Nobody "should" manage the team. Personally, I'd like Martinez, Bobby V. or Francona. I like Martinez because he was a relatively marginal player who was very sound defensively and has been the bench coach for one of the very best managed/coached teams in the majors for four seasons now. He's worked under an excellent manager in Joe Maddon and would ideally bring a similar approach to managing himself. Have no issue with Bobby V or Francona. But how does Martinez warrant a shot and not Sandberg? Sandberg has done all he can do to get a shot. Why do you feel Sandberg deserves a shot over Martinez? For the same reasons I have said over and over again in this thread. He knows the game, he knows our history and what to excpect, he controls the clubhouse and will not let the inmates run it, he's a good teacher and he has done all he can do at the minor league level. All Martinez has done is sit next to Maddon. Let Martinez manage in the minors for a while and see if he can handle it.

  8. Can I have that crystal ball you use?

  10. The point was that he said that Sandberg has paid his dues and deserves a shot as a result, yet he supposedly was certain Quade was a mistake of a hire when it was made. Who do you want to see manage? I'll take Dave Martinez (or many other people) if it means Sandberg never sets foot in the Cubs dugout as manager of the Cubs. Based on?

  12. And you're 200% wrong. So, because I think Ryno should be manager and you don't makes me a troll? Well done. No. Because you keep saying things like "He's paid his dues" and "It's called buying what the manager is selling." Not to mention citing his hall of fame career as a reason he is qualified to be a manager. So how do managers ever get their chance in your world? Minor league manager, former player? Not named Ryne Sandberg? It would help if they verbalized a good managerial philosophy. Sandberg has done the opposite which is a big reason many on the board don't want him. And what does Sandberg have that Quade didn't? Is the Hall of Fame career it? Do you think there is anything else Sandberg has that Quade doesn't? The fact is Mike Quade was given the job based on a very meaningless September record when the Cubs were playing out the string. I think Sandberg also understands the expectations here and understands the microscope. Now, before you say so did past managers, they (Dusty and Lou off the top of my head) actually were quoted as saying they really had no idea it was THAT crazy here. Sandberg also teaches the game very well. He gets players to "buy in' to what he is teaching. Bottom line is the players respect him, the fans respect him and he really has done all he can do to earn his shot.

  14. I thought it was a terrible idea before that blog post, but now... God. A Phillies blog has changed my mind. Or that Sandberg has done all he needs to do to get his shot.

  16. Philly fans want him to replace Manuel as well. http://philliesnation.com/archives/2011/09/keeping-sandberg-a-must-for-phillies-organization/ "Ryne Sandberg, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs manager, and now a part of the coaching staff of the Phillies until their run ends, is likely to become a coveted managerial candidate this offseason. And if not this winter, then likely in the very near future beyond that. It’s a problem because he would slide nicely onto Manuel’s stool in the dugout if Manuel were to decide to step away from the game after 2013. At age 71, it might be time for Uncle Cholly to hang ‘em up. At that point – especially if they win a title or two in the next couple of seasons – he’ll have nothing left to prove. Sandberg himself really has nothing left to prove, either, which is why he’ll be a wanted man by many different teams quite soon. In 2010, Sandberg was the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year with the Iowa Cubs, their Triple-A affiliate. He has succeeded at every level of the minors. All that’s left is to taste the majors once again".
  17. Oh, I see. Players who have hall of fame careers, take bad minor league teams to the playoffs and have the backing of hall of famers such as Pat Gillick misunderstand the game because they bunt in the minors. How do you define a bad minor league team? Minor league teams are almost by definition different from year to year and many times from month to month as promotions and demotions change things. Check out the Phillies minor league team he guided to the playoffs this year and check how horrendous they've been prior to that. It's called buying what the manager is selling.
  18. Oh, I see. Players who have hall of fame careers, take bad minor league teams to the playoffs and have the backing of hall of famers such as Pat Gillick misunderstand the game because they bunt in the minors. Hall of Fame career = irrelevant Pat Gillick paying him lip service so that he might get a job with another team doesn't do much for me, either. I'm citing an actual managerial move he has made more than once, you're citing anecdotal crap. Really? But a guy like Hendry who felt Ryno wasn't ready is truth? Gillick>Hendry.

  20. Is it better to give Ryno the job simply because he was a really great player and a lot of people like him? If you take away the name and consider a man who's been a minor league coach for 5 years total and compiled a 364-341-1 record, is that a guy you're really clamoring for? Dew: I am clamoring for a guy that will not put up with the circus atmosphere players have created here. There is also zero chance Ryno gets on the podium after a game and refers to players with cute names such as: "Wellsie, Marms, Byrdsie etc. when they are getting whipped every day. He understands the game, knows how to teach and just so happens to be a hall of famer. He also will not condone bad baseball and chalk it up as: "We'll get em next time". He will correct it if he sees it.
  21. Give Quade a chance. He's paid his dues and knows the game inside and out. I never wanted Quade. And the fact they gave him the job based on a meaningless September run is/was a joke.
  22. "The Post's Joel Sherman reported that "in last 36 hrs every exec I talk to say they believe Red Sox will give permission and Theo will go to Cubs to be GM."
  23. Give Ryno his chance. He's paid his dues and knows the game inside and out.
  24. Despite the fact both Phillies and Cubs sources are saying a reconciliation is in the works? I have to say, I firmly believe Ryno is going to get the job. I could be wrong, but it looks that way.
  25. Well, where there's smoke, there's usually fire.
