    Yeah, we're at the point where the only way to get anything of note for Bryant or moving Kimbrel at all would require eating some money and with Ricketts crying poor, neither is likely to happen. I might be overly optimistic, but I'd be a bit surprised if they can't eat any of, say, Bryant's contract for a better prospect. I highly doubt they can absorb all or even half of Bryant's $18-20mil, but if a team like the Braves needs the Cubs to cover $5 mil to get his contract down to $15 mil, then I think (hope) the Cubs would take the better deal for $5 mil. Obviously all conjecture, but moving 75% of these bigger contracts is still significant savings for a team and should be palatable even to Ricketts.

    A deal with Pittsburgh built around David Bote for Joe Musgrove is my current favorite route. Considering Adam Frazier is a possible NT, Bote would be a good fit as a 2B who can back up 3B for Ke'Bryan Hayes. It'd require more on the Cubs's side.     PTR is just gonna promote the leftovers up a spot so he only has to hire a low level scout. The best outcome would be for Jason McLeod to find his long foretold GM position. The Cubs would surely allow him out of his contract, which would actually free up money for the front office. I still have hopes that Theo is waiting to step aside if the Cubs can land a GM like Jared Porter this offseason.

    I think having Caratini allows you to take a chance on Sanchez. I could definitely see it as a stop gap for Amaya for a year. He still excels with barrel% and hard hit%, but he rocked a 36% K rate. I’d still look into seeing if you could get Kevin Plawecki from the Red Sox first. With Yu’s no-trade clause through 2021, I’d be pretty shocked to see him traded unless it’s to TEX or maybe LA and that’s only if the Cubs tell him they plan to fully rebuild (granted that’s implied if you’re trading Darvish or Hendricks right now).     My current premise on the offseason would be to sign Rizzo to an extension, trade Willson, and tender the following: Bryant, Baez, Happ, Caratini, Tepera, and Rea. There would be a couple contact-oriented bats, and lots of cheap relievers (the market should be flooded) to see if they can pick up next year's version of a knuckle curve or cutter. 1. Rizzo extension - save $2.5 mil for 2021 2. Trading Willson - save ~$8 mil for 2021 3. Tendering Bryant and Baez - cost neutral 4. Moving on from Schwarber - save ~$10 mil from 2021 projections/decreased if involved in trade 5. The other tender lot: most are obvious (Happ, Caratini). Tepera I'm split on and I think Rea is a cheap option as a reliever only. Almora is an obvious 'no'. Save ~$3 mil 6. The contact bats - Brantley (unlikely), Benintendi, Grossman, and/or La Stella. 7. Find a SP with velocity If you're subtracting $2.5 mil from Rizzo's option, trading WC, moving Schwarber, and bringing in Benintendi and Gausman you've subtracted about $3 mil from the projected $160 mil or so that Brett posted. They'll need it to fill out the roster and hopefully the budget isn't as razor thin as that. If you want to really unload payroll, I'd move Kimbrel. Edit: nontender not contender

    I figured this would be the case, but Brennen Davis mentioned he would be participating in Fall instructs. He did note he’d be starting a couple weeks late. I’m presuming that’s to just give him a break.

    A very important game, especially for the Twins (like you said) and Josh Donaldson got tossed after hitting a home run. He had been frustrated with the ump after calling a 2-0 pitch that should have been a ball a strike. I'm all about giving it back to umps at times, but what a doofus.

    On an extremely cheap 1 year deal, maybe. But there’s a lot of other FA SPs who won’t cost much I’d prefer over him. Hell I’d have more interest in bringing Q and/or Chatwood (depending on the severity of his injury/if he needs surgery) back on 1 year deals over him. I’m actually pretty interested in Q for 1 year next year for a semi reliable/inning eating rotation spot. I’m not particularly in favor of bringing in Arrieta. Barring something unforeseen, I could see a Drew Pomeranz’s 2018 deal ($1.5 mil guaranteed with a chance to be up to $5 mil in salary based on incentives) for Jake. Maybe a team like the Rangers takes a chance or there’s interest in him as a reliever. Overall I agree that there’s other pitchers I’d rather take a chance on.

    Mike Mayers could be a complementary move for the pen who would also help with lefties. He’s a RHP, but added a 90 mph cutter this year. He dropped his 4 seam usage from over 50% to 35% while throwing his cutter 15%. His numbers are actually remarkably similar to Ryan Tepera and for a likely cheap price, I’d gladly add another Tepera to this pen.

    Yes he makes a lot of sense. The Giants are also out of it so a Flores/Tony Watson combo is one that can probably be had for a minimal return. I'm not Watson's biggest fan. Looks like his velocity is down a bit like many pitchers, but he's a perfectly cromulent LHP who doesn't allow walks. He's dropping his sinker usage and increasing his change-up rate, which is interesting to monitor.

    Bryan Smith speculated that Wieck would keep his last option. If that’s the case, I’d bet they keep him around.

    Yeah Cotton’s stuff just didn’t look like it was playing up in the pen. Also I remember he was toying with a cutter in summer camp like a few of the other relievers have been featuring. He may have been trying it, but it didn’t look like he was having the same success. Obviously it’s hard to tell the reason since there’s little to no footage out of South Bend, but this one didn’t surprise me either.

    They really need to get Underwood’s spot figured out. I realize it’s pedantic to be commenting about the last spot of an extended bullpen on a team with the best record in baseball, but if they can only use him in blowout losses it’s time to move on. They already have a spot for Kimbrel to work through things. With today effectively being a bullpen day and 5 games in 3 days coming up they need to roll the dice on a different arm at South Bend.

    I’ve been wondering if Archie Bradley might be an available trade target. It’s too early to say the Diamondbacks are out of it, but they don’t have the easiest path to the playoffs. I don’t imagine they’re in sell mode, but maybe they’d be open to filling a hole on their own team. They have a .169/.229/.246 line (28 wRC+) from 3B and no obvious prospects in the pipeline. They signed Eduardo Escobar, but that’s not a huge barrier, especially for this year (and he’s only signed through ‘21). Cubs get Bradley through ‘21 Diamondbacks get Bote under team control through ‘26

    I’m fully aware that it may not make complete baseball-sense for a long term contract, but I will be very disappointed if Anthony Rizzo wears a non-Cubs jersey the rest of his career.

    I wonder if that was part of the delay compared to the other picks. At some point there was just too much money on the table for a deal to not happen (outside of serious medical issues). Also I noticed the Cubs have signed 11 NDFAs for (likely) a total of $220k and they “saved” just under that amount from what they could have spent under the 5% overage limit in the draft. Hopefully not related.

    I definitely agree, if or no other reason than the Heat wouldn't be the main obstacle to the Bulls. No one in the Eastern Conference would have worried me during that time so the run to the Finals wouldn't have been too challenging. My only concern would be Thibs who was a great coach, but saying he was averse to load management would be an understatement. Perhaps the collective toll on those five wouldn't have been as significant considering there wouldn't have been as much pressure on those five as there was on Rose/Noah to carry the Bulls and the Big 3 to carry the entire Heat roster.

    Did he say this on the MLB Pipeline podcast? Would Luke Little be eligible to be traded? I thought they moved the eligibility date to the day after the World Series ended for recent draft picks. That’s interesting.

    Ben Hernandez signed for pick 51 slot value. There’s a lot of factors involved in that, but I wonder if 51 was Hernandez’s relative floor provided someone like Jared Jones wasn’t available.

    I like the pick for slot value if that ends up being the case. I wonder what Moreno’s number is. He made comments that he is planning to sign so I imagine the Cubs are confident they have everyone’s number somewhat locked in.
