    It can be quite startling, but frequently just a combination of inexperience, over aggressiveness, and minor league field conditions. Remember even superb defensive players in the bigs have had seasons where it looks like they must be playing drunk from all the errors they ring up.

    At the same age, with the same amount of pro experience, Starlin Casto was at AA Tennessee. Amaya is having a nice season but second base is not at all a valuable position and the NWL is an extremely hitter-friendly league. Amaya isn't even in my top 10 Cubs prospects. huh? the team OPS's in the NWL are: .705, .704, .702, .692, .676, .675, .629, .625. Odd - my recollection of the league factors is in line with Raisin's, though I hadn't looked so far this year. Yeah, color me surprised. The rest of my post still stands. There's no reason to compare Starlin Castro to Gioskar Amaya. I have Amaya as the Cubs' 4th best prospect... that plays on the Boise Hawks: Candelario, Pierce Johnson, Vogelbach, then maybe Amaya. He's a quality prospect, but not fourth overall in the system.

    It seems like a good trade on both sides. Pretty fair value and benefits both teams. Good luck Jake. I'd prefer Pittsburgh to win instead of the Cards and the Cincinnati Votto's any day.

    Saw on an earlier tweet that it was a ground ball that took a bad hop, not a straight line drive to the noggin. Ah, that makes sense. That makes him human I guess. Whoa, whoa, whoa. This doesn't prove he's human. Let's not jump to conclusions. :)

    I think we needed to start him last game. Coming off DL, no one would have offered much of a package if he didn't prove that he could pitch.

    Washington could really benefit from capatalizing from the excitement of this team. However it will piss me the hell off if they rebuild and win a WS this fast. I get what you're saying because I want that to be us, but let's face it-they won the equivalent of the lottery by getting Strasburg and Harper back to back. They've made other good moves, but getting those two in back to back years cost-controled... that's pretty big.

    On my phone, but according to Almora he's rooming with Soler in Arizona. That's pretty cool. Who knows maybe they're bring them up together initially to get him acclimated.

    To cover the CF and starter options, would Garza and DeJesus (I know he's a corner, but he's done well and they were going to trot Werth out in center) be a decent combo for some pitching specs?

    Peoria: Baez with a single the other way, but got picked off for his first CS of the year (now 11/12). Jensen with 1 unearned (E on Geiger) through 2IP (3K/0BB) Daytona: Szczur 1/2 (now .292) with a BB and 2 R Del Valle gave up 2 HR in the first but has settled down and is at 5IP 4H 3R 2BB 3K 2HR

    So the same kinda thing Manny got busted for the first time, right? Close, that was Clomid, a drug used to help women get pregnant . Tamoxifen actually also binds to estrogen receptors like Clomid. Actually Tamoxifen's used for certain types of breast cancer.

    Nice ... wouldn't mind seeing him fast-tracked a bit more this year if he shows well in limited outings in Peoria. I wasn't too impressed with what I saw of Matt while he was with Boise. Not good velocity? Control? Mound presence?

    I was at that game. He barely had anytime to get warmed up because the starter was getting just shelled. He went from just getting stretched and throwing a couple pitches to having to really ramp it up and go pitch. He's used to the extra time to warm up being a starter. Hopefully this is something to really practice as he moves up the ladder. Also just a note: ball was flying all night. Kyler needs to work on things, but I wasn't discouraged that much by that outing.

    I literally just burst out laughing in the middle of a coffee shop. Nicely done. But congrats again to Kyler. I'm excited to see him pitch in the All Star game tomorrow and wish him luck at the higher levels!

    I still don't consider that all that great. I guess it depends on which set of scouting reports to believe on Correa. But most years, getting the 5th and 15th best prospects, or however you want to rank those two, is less desirable to me than getting the best one. I'd have rather just had Buxton. I think you make a good point, but I guess it depends on the disparity between the top ranked player and who you pick. If next year plays off like this year I'd be fine with going in the same direction. If it turns out to be a draft with a standout number one ranked player then I agree: you don't want to settle just to pick up an extra prospect. I guess when comparing between Buxton and Correa, they both have high upside. I can totally see just depending an argument for either player.

    The approach isn't that much of an issue because of the new organizational philosophy of not swinging at balls out of the zone. I have no problem if he's swinging at balls in the zone and laying off pitcher's pitches. Plus he's going to get preached for several years about good strike zone management.

    Expected but depressing. On the bright side Whitenack seems to be coming back strong and we went pitching heavy in this draft. Plus he's pretty young. Frustrating nonetheles.

    Yeah, I think this makes a lot of sense. If those picks are very close in talent, make an offer well under slot to each (in your order of preference) and see which one takes it. Then use the balance to go after overslots the rest of the draft until you consume the balance. I completely agree. If we could even pick up someone for about 5-5.5 million it gives us a chance to pick up another first round talent that drops due to sign ability. Right now I'd love a college pitcher like Stanek, but it's a long way off obviously.

    It's been mentioned that they've had him working on his fastball and throwing it almost exclusively, IIRC. I believe his manager said if they let him throw his breaking stuff more he would completely be wiping hitters out. It's a little gushy of a response, but there seems to be some truth to it. If he develops really good command and maybe a tick or two increase in velocity he could really take off next year. I hate to see him struggle so much, but I'm more concerned with next year's results/later this season.

    I've heard that it could cost the cubs 8-12 million. It was short sighted at least. The only bright spot, Castro was clearly ready offensively.

    Well it'd be nice to know just to add everything up, but the keys to figure out will be Almora, round 5-10, and Underwood. Hopefully that leaves us with a decent amount extra and it seems like we've already signed some over slots after 10th round- good sign.
