  1. It's been hinted that Porcello pitches to contact. Whether that's true, a mandate, or his decision doesn't seem clear. Many projected him to actually have a good K rate when he was in high school, but he's not thrown the type of breaking balls like he did before he was drafted. And, while he has a good groundball rate, some pitchFX work guys have done don't really show that he pounds the bottom of the zone all that much, which doesn't make much sense. I still like him, but the numbers make it harder and harder. If he doesn't make a big step forward this year I'll have to admit it may never happen.
  2. Sori would be tough to thrown in to the Tigers, IMO. One reason Detroit targeted VMart in the first place is his left handed bat against righty pitchers. I wonder if they'd make a play for Pena (if he's willing to DH).
  3. Probably. Can't be the only one. Wasn't "Professor Farnsworth" Farnsy's handle on that baseball dugout site with the fake quotes? C'mon- one of you has a quote from that site about Soriano not being an outfielder- back me up on this.
  4. "People just dismiss Burnitz - 'He strikes out a lot. He can't do this, he can't do that.' If you look at it objectively, he was sixth in the game in slugging percentage of people who struck out more than 120 times. He hit .307 with men on base. He hits left-handers well. He hit .287 with men in scoring position. To me, he's not striking out at the wrong times. The analysis is being done." --Cubs GM Jim Hendry, on new right fielder Jeromy Burnitz, who ranked sixth in the game in the new SPPWSOMT120x statistic (Arlington Heights Daily Herald) http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=4674
  5. When talking franchise profit or loss, I've always thought the likely appreciation of the franchise should be included in the discussion as well. Even with McCourt running the organization into the ground, the Dodgers franchise (and included property) is worth way more now than we he bought it.
  6. Not sure the exact stat, but you're right, I remember Hendry referencing some random split that made Jeromy attractive. That, and he hit left-handed.
  7. As a buddy noted on twitter recently, CJ Wilson moved to the rotation at about the age Marshall is now.
  8. Victor Conte, who knows a thing or two about these matters, thinks Braun may just have the latest and greatest PED, which could disappear quickly. http://baseballmusings.com/?p=78184 It would be interesting because we've heard that testers are almost always a step behind those who make the drugs and if Conte's belief is true this would be further proof of that.
  9. MLB Network had something similar to this, but they had the players matchup in a tournament of sorts with the analysts giving their pick between the two. I think it came down to Felix Hernandez versus Mike Stanton, but Kershaw was right there as well. I guess MLBN's cutoff date was earlier than KLaw's since they still counted Felix as 25.
  10. Deadspin has more on Syracuse today, centered on the guy that came forward, who is also facing molestation charges. A truly wacked out story. Plus, that 'orangeyougladididn'tsay' guy was a troll, right? I don't think the post was serious since it mentioned donating to the library, etc.
  11. The a-hole also cracked wise at a presser following the first game after the scandal. How can someone in his situation react so poorly when the PSU news still has to be fresh in their memory?
  12. Another thing I found interesting thing about that Rosenthal piece- he says Epstein and Hoyer have already shifted their plans due to the new CBA that may curtail spending on the draft.
  13. Extensive NYT piece that also talks of the message board post that led investigators to McQueary. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/17/sports/ncaafootball/internet-posting-helped-sandusky-investigators.html?_r=1
  14. The first things I heard about it was he sent an email to multiple ex-teammates, not just one guy. If you are sending out a mass email, you pretty much have to assume it will get out there. If you send it to one guy and he leaks it to the media, either you wanted him to do it, or he's a pretty crappy friend. OK, yeah, that would make more sense. I think I heard "friend leaked it" and made the assumption.
  15. I think if my friend leaked an email I sent where I was trying to justify my actions to them (and presumably not to the whole world), I'd be pretty pissed. I guess they thought they were helping him out.
  16. Just went to Nation- looks good. Can't believe I hadn't stumbled across it before.
  17. That would leave us with the question of comparing salaries. Would you want to compare their worth on the open market? That seems better than lumping club-friendly contracts to starters like Arrencibia in with those like Mauer's. The question is how do we figure open market value-
  18. I don't know about Bleacher Nation, but at one point Bleacher Report was set up to where anyone could sign up to write about sports. I think they have started to monitor their authors a little more, but I'm not sure about that. That concept seems fine, but it opens up the stage for some pretty poor writing, in my opinion. As for speculation like Loney to the Cubs, that stuff gets all kinds of hits, but they're not generally written by those who'd be in position to actually hear such a rumor.
  19. That's probably about right. As a bonus, your post would show up at the top of search engines for entries like Cubs offseason and you would get somewhere around 20,000 reads.
  20. Without looking too much, is your OPS metric basically OPS+? Except I think OPS+ uses park factors and whatnot?
  21. My goodness.
  22. It's consistent with other reports- I think you're thrown off by the "two days after the report" portion. That is referring to two days after the Grand Jury Indictment was made public, I think. What is new to me is that it appears Paterno is trying to indicate that he stopped McQueary's story in his office with something along the lines of- "this is a big deal, you need to go to the A.D. I don't need to hear any more." That's how I interpreted it. I thought the timeline was: DDay = rape DDay+1 = McQueary tells Paterno DDay+2 = Paterno tells AD/Pres DDay+12 = AD/Pres interview McQueary This timeline appears to be similar until DDay + 2, as there is no Paterno tells anybody anything because he put his fingers in his ears and told McQueary to talk to the AD/Pres. Yeah, I'm confused on DDay + 2 because it's not mentioned in the link in Southside's post, but Paterno issuing a statement two days after the indictment came out is. I thought I'd also seen where DDay + 2 was Paterno and McQueary telling to the AD. While that's confusing, as someone else just posted, one of the main points re: Paterno is what/how much McQueary told him and where did it start getting watered down if McQueary was indeed graphic in his description. With the Department of Education getting involved, that whole string of events may be made known eventually. EDIT- muddled post is still muddled

  24. Those scenarios sound reasonable. IF there's a second case surrounding administration and a potential coverup at some point, he sure seems like a likely witness for that as well - either for the prosecution or the defense- and it'd probably look bad for his employer to fire him. They've decided he's off the field for Saturday and I think that was for sure needed.
