  1. I don't think it's that complicated. Sign Furcal. Move Cedeno to 2B. Trade Walker for a relief pitcher. Waive goodbye to Nomar. As for the other moves: Sign Lofton. Sign Giles or trade for a corner OF - Floyd, Abreu, Burrell. Sign (Millwood, Byrd, Weaver) or trade (Zito, Hernandez, Schmidt, Vazquez) for a starting pitcher. All those moves should easily fit into Hendry's budget. Trade Walker for an OF bat. Preferrably a middle of the order hitter, who's lefthanded. Agree w/ the other ideas. Oh and bring back Hairston and Rusch.
  2. That type won't get us anywhere. You can take that to the bank. We all know that but, such a move screams of Hendry, Encarnacion, Preston Wilson, Jacque Jones or Jose Cruz Jr. (although he'd be a FA signing) these are what we can expect. Last offseason maybe. I'm not sure Hendry is dumb enough to make those kinds of moves this offseason if he wants to be GM of the Cubs for much longer. We're already hearing a lot more rumors involving the Cubs than we were last year during this time, which leads me to believe that we'll see something significant happen. I'd like to think he isn't dumb enough as well but, this a GM who let his Manager bat the poorest team OPB players in the 1&2 slots all season long and early on, use Hawkins as the closer, etc. I don't believe he even had enough nerve to go to Baker, with stats in hand, and suggest a change in the 1&2 spots. I'm not suggesting Hendry should have dictated to Baker but, when your Manager is screwing up in such a blatant fashion... I don't think anyone foresaw Patterson being so awful. Baker just showed too much loyalty. Of course, he never gives young guys a shot. *shrug*
  3. Getting Jacque Jones is a lot more likely than Giles. I think gflore laid out the most likely scenario where Giles will use the Cubs to get a better offer from the West Coast teams. Jmo but if Anaheim loses to NY, I think they'll go pretty hard after Giles. Their offense is not that good.
  4. Where's Nomar?? Am guessing he has a negative score like Patterson. Altogether, Wood, Patterson and Nomar hurt the Cubs A LOT more than the vilified Neifi.
  5. I've given in to that type of thinking too. Our window is closing and we have to do what we have to do to get the big dog in the OF. No more Burnies, thank you. I'd also like to go cheap at SS(Cedeno) and LF(Murton) and get an expensive SP(Burnett/Millwood). We'd be on everyone's short list for the WS in 2006 if we followed this plan. Giles & Milwood are two definite must gets. 4 and 52 for Giles is reasonable. Although I see his obp dropping some, as the Cubs would have more protection behind him. However, his ops should go up. How would big contracts for Giles and Milwood effect deals for Prior and Z down the road though?? Am assuming Wood will be playing his last year w/ the Cubs. Since it seems Hendry really values pitching, I don't see him giving anyone a deal over 4 years or over $10 million a year, as he'll continue to sock away money for Z and Prior. Thus Furcal may be his biggest pickup.
  6. Why, just because he's "young?" That and it's Texas. They never have adequate pitching. Give Hendry Theo's money and the Cubs would be playing tomorrow. beginning the season with Holly as a starting LF is the kind of thing that derailed us, not a small budget. A good GM doesn't need 150 mil to assemble a division championship team. Holly was platooning w/ DuBois right?? As I recall, many were happy w/ this platoon. Did you not want to see DuBois get a chance?? Besides RF, I recall most people being content w/ the lineup.

  8. I agree and have been saying as much for a while now. Sometimes, a fan's frustration can get the better of him/her, and they reach the point of hating a team's manager. Once you cross that line, you loose all objectivity and start seeing evidence of that manager's incompetence even where there isn't any. I feel that has happened quite a bit in some of the Dusty Baker threads on this board. I have endeavored to maintain my objectivity and have defended Baker when I saw that he was being wrongly and needlessly attacked. But I have never wavered from my belief that Baker should be fired based on his performance alone. What are you waiting for, Jim? Trammel, McKeon and Tracy have all been fired. Now is the perfect time. Good post. Even if you want him gone, as I do, one should still remain objective. Leave the all or nothing approach to our president.
  9. Give him Boston's budget and he'll do fine. Guy will probably be fired in 3 years.
  10. Some names that have been thrown out there for the LA job are... Kevin Kennedy, Bobby Valentine (Lasorda guy), Ron Washington of Oakland, Orel Hershiser, and Terry Collins. Would be funny if Dusty begged for the LA job.
  11. Floyd would be nice...do the Mets need a second baseman? What would they do with Matsui and his big contract? Well, he'd be an upgrade over Matsui, who the Mets could put on their bench. The Mets are one of the few teams that can afford an $8 million guy on the bench. Also, Walker comes pretty cheap. I'm still hoping the Cubs can get into the Manny talks and get Floyd, w/ Walker going to Boston.
  12. Re-signing Dempster was probably the first move. What will Hendry's second move be? It might be picking up Walker's option - but I am still convinced Walker will be traded. From what Mr. Miles wrote today, it sounds like Cedeno could be our 2B next year. True. Pitching, defense and timely hitting is what you'll hear our Mr. Hendry say will be the Cub goals for the off-season. I agree with you that Walker is gone. I hope this won't be a sell cheap kind of move. My guess is that trading Walker is contingent on either signing Furcal or being able to get M. Giles, Castillo or Kent to replace Walker. It seems the one who's gone for sure is Nomar. Thank God. Walker could stick around if other options don't pan out. I think he's gone no matter what. I see him going to a team to aquire an OF. Hmmm. Maybe he has some off-the-field problems, which the team is keeping hush hush. *shrug* If he's dealt for OF help, hopefully it's Floyd.
  13. Isn't that how the White Sox and Astros got to the post-season? Yep and the Angels. It seems some want to be the Red Sox. However, the Red Sox never won anything until they added Schilling to go along w/ Pedro.

  15. When the theme SHOULD be "guys who can get on base consistently". *sigh* Tell me, Cards fans. What's it like? What's it like for your team to be a contender every year? What's it like to have a GM who isn't afraid to make a move? What's it like to have seen your team in the World Series? What's it like to have a rotation that stays healthy?? What's it like to have guys like Womack, Eckstein, etc. play over their heads?
  16. Nice plan. Things definitely need to be blown up. I'll take both Giles, Furcal, Lofton & Millwood.
  17. Doubt they'd have to take on Bradley to get Perez. Perez has been grumbling about lack of run support though, so I wouldn't be too excited about him joining the Cubs.
  18. Well, signing Millwood sounded good until I saw Boras next to his name. Weaver intrigues me too, but he's with Boras too. I'll take Clemens.
  19. Maybe I missed it, but I haven't witnessed anything suggesting that Hendry had one iota of interest in Kent at any time. I know Hoops and some others called for him, but Hendry's FA radar was busted most of the 2004-5 offseason. Unfortunately, he opted for Nomar and Walker instead of Kent and Eckstein. Of course, Ecktein's obp would be .264 w/ the Cubs instead of .364. :(
  20. The Cubs have A LOT of money to spend this offseason. I don't want to see another significant dollar spent on the pen, the IF and C besides SS should be set. I want Murton to take one of the OF spots. That leaves a hell of a lot of money for 2 OF positions and SS. Dropping 5M on the potential for the best SS in the NL is not flushing down the toilet, it's a smart move. 5M could be spent on Nomar and Giles and whomever is the latest CF of choice can still be fit in the budget. The $8 million investment for this year was a killer. Nomar's fools gold. If the NL had a DH, I wouldn't mind him coming back as much. How was the $8M a killer? Who did it prevent Hendry from acquiring? kent. Go w/ Dubois, CPatt & Holla in the OF and could have got Pedro. Not sure if he'd want to play in Chicago, but the money would have been there.

  22. A healthy ballclub gets into the playoffs. Some people have forgotten how good Prior and Wood were, and Nomar & Walker being healthy would have given the Cubs a formidable 2 through 5.
  23. Giving Nomar 4-6 million next year is just flushing money down the toilet. Just too injury prone and can't play defense anymore.
  24. Kent isn't even a guaranteed 100 point OPS improvement. He's old, and just getting older. Walker isn't much less of a player. They absolutely positively have to get impact bats in the OF. There's no debate. It's not about waiting around for big names to come their way, and hoping they succeed. They have to get enormous improvements in the OF, or they will not contend. 2B is not a position that needs an upgrade, and minimal upgrade for maximum cost is about as foolish a strategy as a GM could employ. Hendry's been around 3 1/2 years now. You've seen what he hasn't done. Hendry needed to sign either Drew or Beltran last year and he didn't. The Cubs most likely won't offer up enough money for Giles or Damon and won't offer up enough prospects for Abreu, Sheffield, Griffey or Dunn. They don't have the money for Manny.. Vlad, Ichiro, Cabrera, A. Jones, Berkman,Edmonds, Matsui aren't going anywhere. After that about the only impact OF bats who may be available are Pat Burrell and Cliff Floyd. Not sure if they can even be considered impact. Altogether, the Cubs better take whatever upgrade's are out there that are Trib friendly.
  25. Good riddance Nomah. TAke the curse elsewhere.
