  1. Well, he had enough money to put 2000 new front row seats into the stadium last year. Iirc he's spent about $20 million or so already on upgrading the ballpark.
  2. Well, LA was 2nd or 3rd in attendance last year & they play in the 2nd biggest market, so am pretty sure they can sustain 95-100 million. It's just a matter of whether the owner will put money into the team or into nearby real estate.
  3. At this point, I take Soriano & his 40 home run potential to bat behind the big run producers, Lee & ARam. Jock Jones is a pretty shaky 5 hitter. Go w/ Cedeno or Murton in the 2 hole.
  4. If Tejada's dealt, it won't be to the Cubs. The Cubs don't have the right set of player for Baltimore. I put my money on Anaheim getting him.
  5. I'm a Walker fan, and want him to stay on the team unless his replacement is a serious upgrade. But I wouldn't call him an excellent 2 hitter. He's a competent 2 hitter, and can be pretty good there, but he's not excellent by any stretch. He does a lot of things well offensively, but nothing great. Pretty fair assessment here.
  6. Washington should pay a portion of Vidro's contract, if they deal him. Sounds like his knee isn't too unreliable.
  7. Murton, Pierre and Jones aren't terrible. Murton's the next coming of Grace. Apparently... Pierre's has a career obp of .355 or so and tons of speed. Jones can hit righties at a decent clip. Dunn's about as likely as Brian Giles. Luis Gonzalez probably looks pretty good to this organization.
  8. Nice addition. Can platoon Murton w/ Jones and Murton can give Gonzo some days off as well. He'll get plenty of AB's.
  9. It sounds like LA's making a good effort to get him back.
  10. No I agree with you here. Soriano+Prior is a better situation than Prior and Jeff Pico, or whomever they were thinking of replacing him with. I think Soriano is a bit undervalued. Yeah he doesn't walk much and strikes out a ton, but consistenly slugs around .500. That's a lot of power from a 2B. If we are going to trade Walker, why not get someone with some pop, since we have pretty much given up the OBP thing this year. Again. It all depends on where Soriano's batting in the order. Same goes for Walker. Since Soriano has nearly hit 40 homers in a couple of season, I don't think Dusty will bat him 1st or 2nd, but will put him in a power spot. With this given order, most likely 5th.
  11. The Cubs need a 5 hitter, so getting Soriano doesn't worry me.
  12. The deal just never added up. Levine stirred up some hysteria though. Job well done. You'll be getting a raise sir.
  13. When the search tool is back up and running, I'm really starting to think that we need to document the number of imminent deals that Levine has discussed that didn't come through. He's not a particularly reliable source, though he does give us some fuel for the hot stove (albeit the dried cow dung variety). He's generated at least two enoormous threads on this bd. since May (Dunn and Tejada). I guess what irritates me the most is he never seems to get called out by the station (or anyone else) for these inaccurate reports, and/or never seems to explain himself when they turn out to be inaccurate. This may be exactly what the station wants, since the bottom line is generating listeners and making money. Just too many people fall for such stories.
  14. I can see that ERA & IP for Maddux. Not sure about the record though. Have to see if the Tejada trade goes through. A 4.50 or so ERA isn't bad for a #5. I don't have high hopes w/ Wood, but I'm expecting better numbers. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jerome Williams post a 3.80 ERA.
  15. No, Giles wasn't one of them. But, lifetime....... At Busch Stadium: 1.169 OPS At GAP: .971 At Miller: 1.000 At PNC: 1.046 At MMP: .915 At Wrigley: 1.173 Giles' road split in 2005 was a 1.008 OPS. Would it have been worth it at all to offer up and pay Mr. Giles 15m a year for the next 3 years to beat up on the entire NL Central. Couple in the fact he has never had two guys like Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez batting around him at the same time. You add Giles, pick up Pierre, fill out the bullpen and bam, got yourself a playoff team. No discussion of trading Prior, Furcal is a distant memory and even Dusty would have a tough time figuring out a way to mess up that line up. But, as I have been reminded time and again, Giles didn't want 15m a year, he wanted to stay in San Diego. Unfortunately, that's a bold move this organization would never make.
  16. Maddux is way too crafty to be as bad as Estes was in 03.
  17. This pitching staff can still be quite good, but it relies heavily on Wood. Thus there's little chance. Williams may far well w/ more run support behind him though.
  18. If they really thought they needed a $9m #5 pitcher when they could have easily filled that role internally, or even through FA at a much cheaper cost, then that was a very, very bad decision. Fwiw & iirc Maddux cost $6 million in 04 and Hawk $3.5 million, and trying to fill the #5 internally or on the cheap didn't work in 03. Estes was beyond brutal. I think it's safe to say that Patterson's demise is a reason why this deal may be going down. They had high hopes for him as a big time run producer.
  19. I'm torn because I think Prior will be an awesome pitcher in his career. However the addition of Tejada could be a real boost to the offense and Bedard could turn into a solid pitcher himself. Ugh. Lee, ARam & Tejada would be nearly as good as Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen at least. Of course, the Cubs can't inject scrapheap players into the lineup and have them exceed career numbers by 100 points. :( I'll believe the deal when I see it. Still doesn't add up.
  20. I really doubt the organization wanted to spend 6 & 72 @ the time when they needed a #5 and bullpen help, as well. Also, Tejada may have much preferred going east back then. That being said..... If this deal goes down, this will exemplify why this organization will never get over the hump, and I'll assume there's internal problems w/ Prior and the organization. At least the offense will be quite exciting for a change. :) Another thing... The offense in 04 looked pretty good w/ Lee, Walker/Grudz, ARam, Alou, Patterson & Sosa. Of course, Patterson has turned out to be an absolute flop.
  21. Is this deal imminent??? Am sure getting that perception from some of the posts here.
  22. Good question. Gotta figured New York and Boston will come a callin soon. Hopefully, Hendry keeps holding his cards for a while. If Prior can't handle being dangled as trade bait & his feelings are crushed, I don't want him anyway. He hasn't pitched well enough to be considered untouchable. Perhaps he's getting a little bit of a swollen head?? Who knows. Good catch on chemistry btw.
  23. Total package has to factor in games played, as well. Hence, there were a lot of guys better than Walker last year. The Cubs would have been better off w/ Grudz. At least, he would have kept Neifi off the field.... That being said, if this is what the Cubs are going to war w/ next year, hopefully Walker's back as the 2 hitter. Just put Cedeno in the lineup when Walker gets hurt.
  24. Jacque Jones will be traded next winter if Pie is ready. He should be pretty tradeable at $10 million over 2 years, since 3 teams offered him more than $15 million over 3 years. Good point. There will be interested teams. RF is not an easy position to fill.
  25. I'm not buying that Hairston's ahead of Walker.
