  1. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/huffau01.shtml Those numbers bear out that he's decidedly subpar. BP2005 categorizes him as a "high-quality hitter with a low-quality glove". And STATS and most scouts I've seen say he's perfectly adequate. BP is, well - BP. Consider the source. I never said that BP was gospel, but it's not garbage either, and certainly not myth. BP does take a very scientific approach to analysis which eliminates emotional bias. And human observation.

  3. I don't know where the "Huff is a defensive butcher" myth started, but I suspect its people who've never seen him play. The numbers and visual observation don't bear it out. He's no Roberto Clemente, but he's a perfectly average corner OF, with an above-average arm.
  4. Yeah...now if the Braves would just re-sign Furcal...they'red be almost no one to insure Neifi doesn't play 4 days a week. You just gotta have faith Hendry can net Furcal. I dont want Pierre and his microscopic OBP anywhere around here. It's not Hendry I'm worried about. Furcal clearly wants to stay in Atlanta, and Hendry can do nothing about that except grossly overpay (which I hope he doesn't). In the end, as Kinzer says, it's Raffy's call.
  5. Bradley could lead off, of course - and absent another option he might for the Cubs. But it's not really a good fit. He strikes out a fair amount, isn't a true base stealer, and his 20-25 HR potential would be wasted. He's much better suited to break up a chain of righties in the middle of the order.
  6. I'm on record liking Bradley more than Pierre as a player, but in the (seemingly inevitable) event that the Cubs lose Furcal, trading for Bradley still leaves you without a leadoff guy. My bigger concern is that losing Furcal will mean Hendry drastically (Pie, for example) overpays for Pierre.
  7. Which Cubs people do you confer with, and which does ITI? Ah, the unknown. If ITI does anything except pull bogus rumors out of their ass, I'd be very surprised.
  8. I agree with Tim on this. I'll be horrified if the Cubs burn another $12 million on a middle reliever, but of the two I'd rather have Howry than Eyre.
  9. Maybe Ohman is now possible trade bait. Also, I'm not going to judge this signing until I see how Eyre does in a Cubs uniform. I guess all the "Mr. know it Alls" here know what the market is regarding LOOGY's as FA's. NOT!!!! Give it a chance all you pessimists & overreacter's! Maybe the optmists should give it a rest. Almost 4 mil for a loogy. Yeah! Just because he is left handed doesn't mean he has to be only a LOOGY. Christ, look at his BAA against righties. Very solid. Hi, I'm Dusty Baker - I don't think we've met?
  10. We've all seen how well throwing big money at middle relievers has worked for the Cubs - and not just the Cubs. Throwing big money at a LOOGY who's been better than mediocre exactly once in his career is totally baffling. As Jeff said, the fact that Hendry is willing to piss away so much of his budget on players like Rusch, Perez and Eyre leads one to believe he thinks his team is already pretty damn good, and needs only minor tinkering. That may be the most depressing part of all of this.
  11. Have you seen the numbers Huff put up last year? I don't want Huff near this team. Bad numbers last year, he's not that good defensively, and there are rumors of him being a really, really bad clubhouse guy. I'd almost rather have Jones or Encarnacion that Huff. Can you quantify that with specifics? I've never heard anything about Huff being a clubhouse problem.
  12. Bruce, I echo Tim's thanks for your contributions here - it's great to have access to someone with an insider prespective who writes without a lot of hyperbole. Just the facts, Man - with your share of opinions, sure, but sound and well-reasoned. It's not easy being a Cubs fan right now (ever?) but it's really great to be able to read your stuff in this setting.
  13. Alfonseca was demoted?

  15. Des Monies Register reports Hill has been recalled and will start.
  16. Well, according to the Des Moines Register Hill has been recalled, so this looks like a moot argument for now.
  17. Rusch hasn't proved any such thing. He was mediocre his last few starts and indeed, has been for most of his career. Give Hill the damn ball.
  18. If Mota is available - and Florida is ready to sell, looks like - he's the guy I'd go after.
  19. If Dunn were really on the verge of being dealt, no way the Reds risk having him play tonight. Game over on this rumor.
  20. maybe the reds want to get rid of Jr. We know they do - have for years - and there are no takers for his contract. That's been discussed ad nauseum.
  21. Why would the Reds want another OF they have no room for? Especially a CF? Doesn't make sense to me. I hope its bogus, anyway - Hill should not be part of any deal.
  22. Ryu's low K totals worry me. That's a very reliable indicator of future success, and the numbers jibe with the reports of sub-90 velocity.
  23. I agree, there's no reason for Cedeno to be on the bench now. When he was initally called up and Neifi was playing out of his mind it was okay, but now it's ridiculous. My point was more that when a player is first called up, it's okay if they don't play every single game. That's especially true when the player at their position is playing well. At Murton's age and this stage in his development, I think it might be more beneficial to him if he gets 4 starts a week rather than playing everyday. Neifi hasn't been "out of his mind" since April. SInce May 1st his OPS is well below .600.
