  1. Bruce, how does the brass view Theriot - any idea? Is he seen as a potential everyday 2B/leadoff candidate, or strictly as a utility guy? He shows more patience than just about anyone else at the big-league level in the organization, and even for a group that doesn't value OBP highly his skills seem like a natural fit for the leadoff spot.
  2. Our fate rests in the West - the Padres letting Bochy walk, or Sabean making Lou an offer he can't refuse.
  3. Bruce, two questions. First, do you think Bochy has appeal as a compromise candidate, if in fact the rumors of a split between Hendry and his bosses exists with Girardi and Piniella? Hendry doesn't want to displease McDonough by going against his wishes (when his own job is hanging by a thread), McDonough would rather not force Girardi down his throat. Enter Bochy, if SD would allow it. Second - how much better was Joe's '06 Marlin team than the Tampa squads that Lou was losing 100 games with? I think that's a relevant question... Thanks.
  4. He's a bulldog, too - a real Maddux/Hershiser mind on the hill. This guy is going to be a beast - it sure would be nice to see the Cubs try, at least. BTW - Will Carroll is the last guy you want to listen to when it comes to the gyroball, as he's personally responsible for about 98% of the minsinformation about it. Yes, it is a pitch and yes, Matsuzaka throws it (though not often).
  5. I don't know why in the world you would ever think that. :^o I can understand it, in a way - working for Steinbrenner isn't easy. Like working for Al Davis before the senility - overbearing and intrusive, but basically pretty sharp. Still, I think Joe would take the Yankee job. Here's the rub, though - Joe is basically a Joe Torre protege'. Why would the Yanks fire Torre only to replace him with his star pupil? Piniella makes much more sense for them.
  6. Honestly, I'm hard pressed to see how anyone who has actually watched Bochy manage could say he doesn't play kids, or frankly, compares to Dusty Baker in any meaningful way. It just doesn't hold up to scrutiny.
  7. Yes, IMO - and he might just retire outright. If not, he would certainly be my first choice.
  8. Boch has been pretty careful with his starters generally, Peavy being no exception. If anyone should be worried, its the bullpen horses he rides like rented mules occasionally. Still - I'd hire him.
  9. I lived in SD for six years, and Bochy was manager during that entire run so I saw a lot of him. I think he's a pretty solid guy - universally respected in the clubhouse, but not a soft touch like Dusty. He never struck me a guy who can easily be pigeonholed as "old school" or "new school" - he bunts occasionally, plays for the big inning sometimes, and generally seems to defy easy characterization. He also tends not to overwork his starters, occasionally to the point where he's been accused of having a quick hook. On balance, I like Boch. Girardi is my first choice, but I'd be happy with Bochy.
  10. Takes pitches, works the count, plays hard, steals bases effectively. Clearly this guy is not a Cub.
  11. The Cubs are on the list of teams Hunter counldnt be traded to, so it seems unlikely that he'd want to sign here as a FA.....at least I hope. Well, I'd sure as hell rather have Hunter than Pierre. He's a much better defender, and figures to give you an OPS 75-100 points higher.
  12. First of all, its not my theory. But if I was to theorize, the Renteria and Beltran examples would make an interesting circumstantial case that it takes a year for some guys to adjust to going from a small-market team to a media circus.
  13. There was certainly a correlation last year - Beltran got off to a terrible start and ended up having a mediocre (for him) season.
  14. FTR, Hill does have a third pitch -a cutter, which he's been using several times a game against RHP mainly. He doesn't throw it much, but he hasn't needed to lately. As for Zito, yeah - figure he's getting $15 million. Or more. He's a model of consistency - his delivery is smooth and repeatable and he's never had a major arm problem. All he does is throw a ton of innings, win, and post sub 4.0 ERAs in the AL. He's a stud.
  15. My favorite, without a doubt, is the moment I found out he'd been traded to Detroit.
  16. So little to be happy about this year, but this is a good day. Now if only someone will take Izturis off our hands.
  17. Full Article Thoughts? I've watched a lot of Boch over the years - I lived in SD for a while - and I think he's damn good. He tends to overmanage at times, but he knows the game (unlike Baker) and tends to get the most out of the talent at his disposal. He's basically a players manager, but not afraid to be a red-ass when the situation calls for it. I think he'd be a very nice choice.
  18. That's a myth perpetrated by Will Carroll (which he's since recanted) - that Maddux cutter is actually a shuuto, a totally different pitch. How many guys actually throw a gyroball is a matter of debate, and nobody throws it often - but Matsuzaka does use it on occasion. Even if he didn't, he'd still be a stud.
  19. If Baker has any sack at all, he'll go after Berkman and get himself tossed.
  20. I tend to agree, Rosenthal is FOS on this one. I don't think even the Yanks would drop $100 million on essentially a rookie, albeit a highly polished one. Mind you, he'll still be expensive and the Cubs won't be involved - but no way the rights go for $25 mil. More like $10-12 million, and $36 mil for a four year deal.
  21. To paraphrase Groucho, I wouldn't want to be a fan of any club whose manager was chosen by Jim Hendry.
  22. Matsuzaka pitched in the WBC, and he was extremely impressive - Maddux like movement on a 92-93 MPH fastball, perfect control, excellent offspeed stuff. He works his pitches very much like Maddux, and as for the "gyroball" - thanks to a bogus piece by Will Carroll many people think its the same pitch as the "shuuto" (which Maddux throws, though he doesn's call it that) but it most definitely isn't. It's a semi-mythical pitch but it exists, and probably moves more like a late-breaking screwball than any other pitch. The whole idea is to get the ball rotating like a bullet fired from a gun, which is apparently damn tough or else everyone would do it. Matsuzaka is a stud, and he would be a very solid #2 starter type in the majors, maybe better. No way the Cubs will be interested.
  23. Bynum is sort of a poor man's Chone Figgins. No question the As have been showcasing him big-time, but they genuinely do like him as a player.
  24. I don't buy it for a second, but on the off chance we did get Lugo he's the guy I'd put at 2B. I have more faith in Cedeno's defense at SS.
