And no I am not drunk. I'm only on my 2nd Samuel Adam's Noble Pils (fantastic beer by the way) but after a week or so of pondering, I am making this statement. Why you may ask? To simply put it...It's The NL Freaking Central! This division is pretty toothless overall this season. The Reds were a fluke last season, the Brewers didn't get much better, the Cards are hurting pitching-wise, and the Pirates are the Pirates. The Cubs have a lot going for them (even if 2nd base is a black hole). A new manager who isn't going to take crap from anyone, zero expectations, several fresh faces, a solid starting staff, and momentum coming off last season's strong finish. If this were any other division outside the AL Central I'd think the Cubs had no shot. This year is the year Richmond, of VCU, of Butler. It's the year of "you can't...you shouldn't....you won't". It's the year when critics can be ignored. It's 2011 and the Cubs have a clean slate. Why not? Make Ronnie proud Cubbies and take this thing. Anything can happen and it's gonna happen. Peace out and happy opening day.

Garza has had only one good season in his career. How can be command this type of deal?

Pena's AVG last year was a fluke due to a BABIP that was 57 points lower than his career total. He probably won't hit above .270, but if his BABIP returns to normal he most assuredly won't hit below .200... or even .240 for that matter. Meanwhile he'll likely draw 80+ walks, hit 30+ homers, drive in 100+ runs, and provide great defense at 1B. Batting average isn't everything. In 2009 when he hit .227 he still had a 133 OPS+ which was better than the 129 OPS+ he had the year before when he hit .247. No matter which year he returns to, whether it's 09 or 08, he will be an upgrade over Lee this past season and will provide great value at $10 million dollars... but since his contract is deferred he will probably be playing for around $8 million I would imagine, which is even better. I know average isn't everything but he strikes out a ton. Not out of the ordinary for a power guy, but the Cubs already have Soriano for the swing and misses. I don't dislike Pena as a player, just think 10 million is a lot for him.

10 million for a guy that hasn't hit over .247 since 2007 worries me. He's got power but his average has been terrible for the majority of his career. 2007 was his best season by far. I know it was going to be hard to replace Lee, but the Cubs paid too much for Pena.

A few ones that come to mind but can't remember the exact game. When Ron lost his pen and the team the Cubs were playing I think scored a run and Ron was still talking about his lost pen. When Ron started reading a fax right before the Cubs won a game. The fax read started right as Pat was getting ready to make the final call. Ron yelling "Yeahhhhhhhh!" after the Aram beat the White Sox with a walkoff a few years back. The details on these might not be perfect.

Quade, Jaramillo, and Trammell can stay. The rest can go at the MLB level. Rothschild is overrated IMO. Where is that ace that the Cubs have had on a consistent basis? Sure they strike people out a lot since Rothschild has been here, but when has he developed a pitcher into a top of the rotation guy?

I thought for sure Marmol and Silva would make it. If the Cub offense didn't stink so bad Silva would have more wins. Marmol is having a special season but just doesn't have the saves I guess which shouldn't keep him off the team.

I am praying that Rickets just cans Hendry and Lou ASAP. I understand it won't change anything but the past two seasons have been epic failures. I appreciate what Lou did in the past here in Chicago, but it's clear he lost interest last season and should not have returned this year. Time to get fires going. Fire the manager and GM, and start a fire sale to get prospects. This team is just disgusting as much as it pains me to admit it. Things have just gone south since the last trip to the playoffs.

Maybe if Colvin gets to hit the rest of the game the Cubs can climb back into this. Wait a second. The Reds can't bat for this to work.

Dempster is nearly hitting for a better average than Ramirez is.

The past two seasons have been terrible to watch. I've all but given up on this year. Each day that passes and each loss creeps closer to the door being shut. Thank God this division is terrible or it would have been totally over a month ago.

Considering how bad both teams are, a participation ribbon might be a better idea. With a down economy let's not waste gold.
