  1. I can't wait for more of the Javy Baez Experience. And, I agree that Willson is going to be a surprising breakout candidate. I think Russell is deservedly getting love as a breakout candidate, because there's so much potential there, and with his defense, the heights can be extraordinary. But, Willson is legit. His athleticism is pretty rare for a catcher. And I think he is going to put up really good numbers at the plate. I have enough confidence in his bat that I do think he'll be one of the elite catchers in the game.
  2. "There's so much wrong with sports today," says guy watching sports at 1 AM on Sunday morning.
  3. The reason they carried him off the field is because they were scared of how mean he is to them.
  4. I've been incredibly busy and haven't really seen much of anything. So can someone that's been paying attention to things fill me in on how Almora has looked? Obviously, his numbers look good, but is he actually making solid contact a lot? Is he showing any patience whatsoever? Any details would be appreciated. He's the one guy I'm most intrigued by heading into the season. I'm hoping he can be a pleasant surprise.
  5. Eloy is going to be such a beast. I'll be following him with the same fervor that I was for Bryant, Schwarber, et al. And I have high hopes for Butler. I know I shouldn't. I know it's not realistic to expect us to Arrieta whoever we want. But I really liked that pick up. Hopefully we keep seeing more of that from him.
  6. Yep. We are now just looking for the Jason Heyward that hit .275 or so with 15-18 homers and made everybody say, "Wow, this guy could be a monster, hitting 30-some homers, if his swing wasn't so ugly." I suppose we can give up on the hope of him ever figuring it all out and being an absolute monster. But, maybe, just maybe he doesn't have to be completely horrendous. Pretty please.
  7. the only thing i can think of is that he actually buys into his own horsefeathers about inspiring people and he thinks his awfulness is a net-positive somehow. "Look, maybe I don't make it, and that's ok, because that little boy out there" etc The whole "Tim Tebow saved someone at a baseball game by laying hands on them" BS is kind of a perfect microcosm of this. The Mets are probably just trying to save on medical bills since they'll be able to have Tebow's magic hands treat their entire pitching staff instead of James Andrews'.
  8. I think his swing looks better. Granted, it still looks ugly. But I like what's going on with the upper half, particularly his hands. It's a lot quieter. His bottom half still looks really ugly. I don't think there are quite as many moving parts, like last year when his limbs were flying in every which direction. So it's not quite as ugly... maybe? But I don't see how he can derive power from this still ugly-as-hell swing, that homer notwithstanding. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes. God bless his heart for that rain delay speech.
  9. I've sworn off watching baseball games this year, so as to not be reminded of that terrible, no-good World Series championship.
  10. Ah, spring training. A pop up surrounded by three guys with numbers in the 80s.
  11. Yeah, I like that idea a lot. Let them work it out during the season. Keep both of their innings down. Keep Montgomery fresh and try to keep Anderson healthy. If another pitcher goes down for a couple weeks, you can slide one of them in and it would be a reasonably easy transition. And if things go according to plan, we will have a large lead in the division and we'll be able to do these things without feeling any pressure or desperation.
  12. What a weird article though...they're acting like "oh, a bad inning just happened to happen then"...as if that wasn't the culmination of blowing a 3-1 lead in the series. But being able to explain that stuff away to yourself is, I'm sure, a key component to being successful in sports. Nothing against Bryan Shaw, who's a really solid pitcher, but, yes, a bad inning did have to happen right there. The Indians had rode Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, and Cody Allen all the way to Game 7. And they'd already run out of those guys to use. This was bound to happen. Their biggest mistake was in coming back and merely tying the game instead of taking the lead. There was no saving their season. There was no redemption. There was only Bryan Shaw.
  13. It's going to be really fun when Contreras and Russell are .850 OPS monsters and we don't have anywhere we can move them up.
  14. Yeah, the 2016 core of Rondon/Strop/Grimm/Edwards all being under control through 2018(and only Rondon not being under control for 2019) goes a long way to keep the bullpen from descending to a bad place. Yep. Just from mapping out the bullpen and the future, whenever I looked at Cot's Contracts I was always slightly dismayed that Strop didn't line up with Rondon on free agency. Obviously, we are in a good spot with all the young guys around for a long time. But it's settling to have a buffer for a couple years before we have to completely re-tool the bullpen.
  15. Me too. Zobrist seems perfect for that spot. But, whatever... I don't really care. As long as the good guys go up as quickly as possible, I don't care too much on what order they bat.
  16. Yeah, that's a good deal. The club option is a nice touch, too. Bullpens alter so rapidly that it doesn't really matter, but it's good to know we have him for another year to provide stability, if he's healthy. And you get that stability without having to give numerous years to a veteran free agent.

  18. He'll put one on top of the LF video board this year.
  19. We have our very own Drake LaRoche. Hopefully KB doesn't act accordingly when Seal Boy is cut.
  20. It comes as very little surprise that the Cards fan from Pekin, IL thinks this, considering he lives in a town that's high school nickname was the Pekin Chinks until the 1980s.
  21. Last year was kinda fun.
  22. Who plays the RP/LF role this year?
  23. Tough break. At least the rest of their rotation is in tip-top shape...
  24. I would agree with you, except that the Cubs' staffs have been very healthy the past few years. So I think they've found something deeper than that. My guess is that they've found that there's no such thing as a "perfect" delivery and tweaking a natural delivery either increases injury risk or keeps it neutral. It could be a little of both, too. Like, if they plan on making a $100+ million commitment on a guy, they are going to do it with a guy they've somehow identified as more likely to stay healthy. But, knowing that not everyone is Jon Lester, they would rather a guy feel comfortable and give him every opportunity to perform his best, without constantly worrying about something they know they can't fully control.
