  1. He doesn't have to now-Floyd is not in the standard lineup either. Right. Now he can just say Murton hasn't produced either, even though a) he hasn't really had a chance; and b) he's still just as good as Jones. Meanwhile the Cubs sink further into oblivion and nobody addresses the obvious problem...they can't get on base.
  2. I'm guessing the reason now is that Pie is up for his defensive prowess in CF, so that only leaves 1 spot for JJ, Floyd, and Murton (in that order, I think). But I'd like to know why Murton is 3rd in the pecking order there.
  3. Remember when Lou was excused for "playing the hot hand" with Floyd? Good times... Floyd and Murton now have the same OPS, while Murton has the superior OBP. In the last 7 days, Floyd is sporting a mind-boggling .301 OPS. Better find a new "excuse", Lou. Further, 2006: Murton: 297/365/444 Floyd: 244/324/407 Jones: 285/334/499 Tell me again why Jones and/or Floyd are better options?
  4. Oh God, I had almost forgotten about his incentives. :pukel: What a craptacular situation.
  5. They will probably start hitting (for more power anyway) but that isn't the only concern. They still can't get on base enough. Hill, Lilly and Marquis aren't likely to continue at their current levels. The fifth spot in the rotation is an obvious question mark and Zambrano has looked terrible (though he is likely to improve). Everyone is quick to point out that there are people stuggling who will come around, which is true. But there are also guys out-performing all expectations at this point that are likely to come back to earth.
  6. Yeah, if Jones was unmarketable in the offseason it's hard to see why he would be marketable now. The Cubs could easily showcase him for the rest of the season and still get no takers. That would suck. It would be a lot simpler and quicker to trade Murton. Maybe we could get a LH reliever to replace Eyre. It might be simpler and quicker, but it wouldn't necessarily be right. The Cubs are going to need some cheap production somewhere in their lineup with the contracts they've lined up over the next few years. Signing Zambrano to an extension if/when that happens will only make it worse. Murton can provide cheap production now and in the future. He shouldn't be on the trading block, IMO.
  7. Yep. The writing was on the wall when Floyd signed. Shame.
  8. I'm still waiting for that magical game number 35 when I was told it would be acceptable to start worrying/complaining about Murton not getting enough playing time. It won't last, I was told. Can't wait for May 11!
  9. And that black hole that is Cedeno/Izturis isn't? At least one can reasonably expect that the offensive production from the OF is going to pick up. The same can't be said for Izturis or Cedeno.
  10. agreed. it's concerning that the Cubs haven't been able to take advantage of some great outings by Lilly and Marquis as I don't really expect them to continue.
  11. et tu, Rocket? i'll try the optimistic approach this season i guess someone has to
  12. et tu, Rocket?
  13. i don't know if it hurts an individual's performance or not, but i would like to see tham put together a consistant lineup. i think we've seen enough to know who is likely best suited for what. if they insist on playing Jones to boost his trade value and/or give Pie more time in the minors, than stick him in CF and leave him alone (except maybe resting him against LHP). put Theriot at SS already, put him in the 2-spot and lets move forward. soriano theriot lee ramirez floyd/murton barrett jones derosa
  14. everyone and their mother has been talking about this, and the Cubs have seemingly done nothing to solve it. awesome...
  15. one thing to consider is that this team is having the same problems the Cubs have had the last several years. they can't get on base and they can't score runs consistantly. Lou is not putting the best possible team on the field either, IMO. you can say it's early, and it is, but it's the same thing as last year, and 2005, and so on... that's why people upset. things can't change over night, of course, and they may not change enough this season at all. coaches/managers can only do so much when they still have the same types of players that got them into this mess.
  16. I'm hoping guys like Howry, Eyre, and Ohman become more consistent when (if) we can start getting more than 5 innings out of Zambrano and our 5 slot. Our bullpen is throwing a lot of innings this year so far. Yep. Having Howry/Cotts/Ohman consistently going for the 6th/7th inning to set up Wuertz and Dempster I think would really strengthen the pen. Although I do like how Wuertz has been used in high leverage situations before the end of the game. I agree. I think Wuertz is THE stopper until proven otherwise. The guy has brass balls, and seems to thrive in high-pressure situations. Under no circumstances should Eyre be allowed to pitch to more than 2 batters. join. i like using wuertz in big situations rather than labeling him as the 8th inning guy or whatever. he's their best reliever and should be brought in at the most important moment regardless of the inning.
  17. Hill dominates again, but the Cubs find a way to lose. Brewers 0; Cubs -1
  18. Why in God's name would anyone advocate sending Murton to Iowa and keeping Cedeno on the roster?? That is shocking to me. What does Matt Murton have to do to convince people he can be an everyday outfielder? He's in a slump, nothing more.
  19. The whole Miller situation illustrates perfectly what has been wrong with the Cubs for years (one of the things anyway). They'd rather go with guarenteed mediocracy (or worse) than take a chance with a young guy who is unproven. It's happen again, and again, and again and that's the reason I fully expect the Cubs to do something stupid like give Miller another start. I also expect to see Pie or Murton get sent down to the minors so they can go with Jones/Floyd in CF and/or RF. Hooray!!
  20. Honestly, I hold little to no hope that they can turn things around enough to make a run this year. That's part of the reason I advocate going this route with Pie, Murton and Theriot. Let's see what we have here and move forward. I see little benefit in sticking with guys like Jones, Floyd and Izturis at this point. The problem with your scenario is that Murton isn't a right fielder. He doesn't have the arm. I knew Hendry would would hurt Murton's progression when he went ga-ga over Soriano and then went after Floyd. Floyd by-the-way, is someone who Hendry has been after since he coached college baseball. I'll say this for the guy, when he has a mancrush he holds it for a very long time. I feel bad for Murton. But I feel worse for us. We have to watch this mess unfold. My hope is that Lou can overcome and adapt. It really seems like he's trying. I like that. I agree, but I'd try Murton in RF. How much worse is he going to be than Jones? Jones has a little range, but he's average at best, IMO. There really isn't anyone on the roster with the arm to play RF, except maybe Soriano. I do worry about what the plan for Murton actually is though. I wouldn't be shocked to see the Cubs do something stupid like not give him a chance.

  22. As I mentioned in the "Pie sticking in the majors" thread, I'd like to see him kept here and remain the starting CFer. His bat will come around, IMO, as it always has. Though I'm typically not hung up on defense, he's so far and beyond everyone else that it's a joke. I say stick with him. There are two problems with that. 1. The Cubs can't afford to have another black hole (for now) in the lineup; and 2. Who is sent down (to get to 12 pitchers)? I've seen enough of Cedeno/Izturis. If Lou is really serious about keeping Theriot in the lineup, let's get him in at SS already. Send Cedeno down and Izturis becomes the backup at SS/2B (or better yet, get rid of Izturis). The future outfield of this team is (or should be) Soriano, Pie and Murton. Let's just get these guys out there now and stick with it for a while. Murton is far from ideal in RF, but there is little choice. Floyd is going to have to work on RF as well if he wants to get in there. For now, Jones, Floyd and Murton can all share time there (as well as LF while Soriano works his way back) until a deal can be worked out to ship Jones or Floyd (most likely Jones). Starting today, I'd do this: Soriano LF Theriot SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Barrett C Murton/Jones/Floyd RF DeRosa 2B Pie CF
  23. I wouldn't mind if Pie stayed. His bat will come around (as it always had once he adjusts). Put Theriot at SS, DeRosa at 2B and rotate between Floyd, Murton and Jones in RF for now until a deal presents itself. I'm not a defense first guy by any stretch, but Pie is clearly head and shoulders above anyone else on this team in CF and I see no reason to think his bat won't come around. Taking Izturis/Cedeno out of the lineup allows you to have Pie in there, IMO. Soriano LF Theriot SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Barrett C Murton/Floyd/Jones RF DeRosa 2B Pie CF
