  1. Why would anyone be surprised that playing the field may impact his at bats? He was a DH last year and hit fine. Fresh legs work wonders. It is not unrealistic to think that a player who never has more than 300 AB a season and who recently became a DH might be impacted by wear and tear.
  2. The Cubs have been terrible recently at hitting with runners on/in scoring position. The Cubs are 28th in baseball in BA, R and OPS with RISP. Last year we were 4th in all 3 of those categories I think. It's a major major problem and a huge reason why our offense is nowhere near as good as last years. The combination of not having Ramirez and a *very* powerful lefty bat in Edmonds has hurt this team. 19 HR in 250 AB with a .937 OPS is something this team would love to have right now. Edmonds went yard every 13 or so AB.
  3. Hey guys, he doesn't hustle sometimes, and he looks at his home runs. Dave Kaplan told me that and he's a baseball genius.
  4. If Soriano goes on one of his hot streaks during October he could carry a team to a World Series title. hahaha Now you understand how almost everyone else responds to your ideas on posteseason success. Hey, Mojo Pin responds with angry talk radio likeness.

  6. hahahahaha Reds: 29-26 Cubs: 27-26 Believe that puts the Reds a game "better" than the Cubs, no? They play 162 games buddy. 162 games gives teams a chance to withstand things like injuries or lackluster and sometimes unlucky play. And sometimes a team with a $140 million payroll struggles against the Baker Budget Boys. Not exactly encouraging.
  7. Link? http://www.nancarrow-webdesk.com/warehouse/storage2/2007-w39/img.07957_t.jpg Granted hes no Alexei Ramirez, but Hendry is of pretty average build for a man his age for someone who warrants so many fat jokes. Age has nothing to do with it. You are either overweight/obese or you aren't.
  8. He has had few at bats and was given quick runs against premiere SP.
  9. Hoff seems to have a knack for big RBI's, something this team lacks.
  10. And you are happy with the signing knowing that? He had 19 games in the field last year. What was it the year before that? Right. Hard to be disappointing when no one expects much any more. The lack of power is a major concern. Really? I thought his playoff statistics were a pretty decent indicator of the depths he can sink to. Maybe, but $140 mill should cushion. Marmol was not all roses last year. He had some control issues. That said, one man does not make a bullpen. The Cubs bullpen as currently constructed is not on a competent level, let alone a level indicating a $140 million payroll. I think it was laughable when you look at it in the context of the Cubs needed to shore up a problematic spot in RF. If that position is plaguing you year in and year out, is the first thing that comes to your mind " injury prone DH"?
  11. I don't see any of thse things as surprises. 1. Bradley. We knew he would only play around 300 games a year. He's an aging member of the walking wounded and this was bound to effect performance. Is it any coincidence that he hit just fine last year as a *DH*, and isn't hitting this year while playing the field? 2. Lee. His numbers have been declining for quite some time. This is not a surprise. 3. Soto. Had a great rookie year. He's been the biggest bust so far, offensively and defensively. 4. Soriano. Streaky, low OBP lead off man. That's what he does. He can carry a team when he is on, but expect substandard performance when he is not. 5. Ramirez. Bummer. Injuries happen ,and $140 millon payrolls allow you the flexibility to overcome them. This GM isn't smart enough to do that. 6. The bullpen. Created completely by design, and a complete failure. When I look at the two biggest failures of this offseason, I see horrific choices made concerning the bullpen and the absolutely laughable signing of Milton Bradley for $10 million over Adam Dunn, who is a proven imapct player in the NL and who also signed for $10 mill per. With a bat like Dunn at #3 or #4, the loss of Ramirez isn't as significant.
  12. DeRosa isn't an everyday RF'er. Neither is Bradley, and even Snuffaluffagus knew that before the Cubs signed him.
  13. Cubs would have to move Bradley, which at this point looks like a "must do".
  14. Team stinks, period. It has a bad GM too.
  15. A sub 800 OPS is not a good start toward turning around their totals. It may eventually level them out at substandard, but that's not turning things around. Lee has a 736 OPS, how would continuing at a rate of 775 turn that around? D Lee AB R H 2b 3b HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS BABIP P/PA IsoD RBI% First 40 games 121 14 29 6 0 4 18 13 27 0.240 0.309 0.388 0.697 0.278 3.93 0.069 0.197 Last 9 games 20 2 6 2 0 1 1 3 1 0.300 0.417 0.550 0.967 0.278 4.17 0.117 0.000 Gooney, you can spin it any way you want, and frequently do. Progress is still progress. treading water below median production is not progress.
  16. That is just sad. Our first basemen has absolutely no power at all.
  17. Let's see. - Everyone here knew signing Miles, especially as basically DeRosa's replacement, was a stupid idea. - Everyone here knew that Bradley was injury-prone. - Everyone here, for the most part, could see that Derrek Lee had been declining throughout most of 2008. (I'm glad he's on the uptick right now, but he's got a long way to go before having a productive full season.) - Most here, while glad to be rid of Jason Marquis, thought it was iffy to bring in a nothing reliever for him. - Everyone here was skeptical as to why we were shedding like 5M in bullpen pitchers for no apparent reason less than two weeks in when we weren't exactly loaded with great relievers. - Most here were skeptical of Dempster's contract considering his career numbers. This isn't hindsight. For the most part, these moves were bad even in foresight. Spot on.
  18. Sounds like that team actually won something though. So no, it's not worse. Winning the NL Central is a lot harder than winning the North Dakota state title in anything. Not when you are given a $40 million dollar head start.
  19. Sounds like that team actually won something though. So no, it's not worse.
  20. What do the last 100 years have to do with this one? Do you really think that fans operate in some vortex? If people were born within a year, loved the Cubs then died within that year you might have a point. But people live 65+ years, and experience the long droughts of this pathetic franchise. The goal is to win the world series. Until the Cubs do, they will have that stigma, and so will the fans. That's the perception.
  21. its not like anyone is running away with the division like in 2004 and the cards. There isint much good about this team but there are some things like the starting pitching which has been pretty good overall and Randy Wells has really surprised me. This team looks like the team that showed up in the playoffs. I like your positive energy, but the Cubs just aren't good.
  22. All Hendry had to do was go out and sign an impact, consistent lefty bat like Dunn rather than wasting $14 million on a non-impact player like Dempster. That was it. The pen was decent, the hitting ok. When I first heard about that I couldn't believe it. You don't give that kind of money to mediocre players.
  23. I didn't know we were required to drink the Kool Aid. What is there to be positive about with Cubs baseball? They haven't won a WS in 101 years and have put forth some of the worst choke jobs of all time. That's reality. I accept it as a Cubs fan and embrace it. You can't get better until you realize you are at the bottom. All you can do is expose everything in the light and make adjustments. React in a postive fashion when there is a postive product out on the field. It's a two way street. This is a $139 million team that is playing very poor baseball. Why should that be rewarded?
