  1. Wait. This Cronenworth dude is 27? Oh, hell no.
  2. There was a time a half a season into the Yu contract when the thought of being able to trade him for anything would have been unlikely. He really became awesome again. The Cubs have gotten really stale for me, and just coming back with the same team was going to be stale again. Considering I don't think they are going to be that good next season with or without him, I'd rather trade Yu now. It's like having a good closer when you suck. Plus there is a good chance he will be much happier playing for a top contender and living in perfect weather. ETA: Correction. After looking at the numbers, there was a time after one full season when trading him for anything would have been unlikely. He really sucked that whole first year, didn't he?
  3. I could be wrong, but I'd imagine the Padres are going to pay a decent amount of it. Possibly, but two years of Wil Myers, even if cheap, isn't overly valuable to us after trading one of the best pitchers in baseball. They will just flip him, too. I know they will act like they are trying to be competitive, but I don't think ownership is really that interested in anything but payroll for the next few years (or maybe ever again?). If they were, they likely wouldn't be trading Darvish in the first place. ETA: I'm fine with trading Yu even from a straight up baseball decision. There are reasons to do it, although I don't believe the Cubs are doing it for those reasons.
  4. I could be wrong, but I'd imagine the Padres are going to pay a decent amount of it.
  5. Still intrigued by the multi-year interest of this board regarding Manuel Margot considering his numbers continue to look like crap to me.
  6. I know I just know this, but who was our closer we lost? Jeffress Wow. Had no idea he was still controlled and that I forgot he was the closer for a lot of the season.
  7. I don't know how you can be bored with all of the Cubs' activity. We traded Theo for Hoyer, Venable for Harris, Kasper for an announcer to be named later, we dumped our starting LF and closer for nothing, etc. while those other silly teams are working on their rosters. I know I just know this, but who was our closer we lost?
  8. My hottest in the moment take is that if Len wanted to do radio so badly then they should've put Pat(who has very much lost his fastball) out to pasture. i don't disagree, but they'd never do that (and len would probably want nothing to do with forcing him out) aren't you my anti-vin scully buddy too? Off topic, but is there a reason why you are writing everything in lowercase? Like other times, I feel like I might have missed something on the board.
  9. 100 percent. And people aren't going to pry into finding out the reasons, because they know the reasons and respect Len as a friend and/or colleague to leave it alone. This might be the worst look yet for the Cubs, worse even than non-tendering decisions or being cheap. Len's decision felt more like a culture move, and that's really not good.
  10. Why would Schwarber agree to that though? He might as well at least test the market before taking a cut. I guess it would depend on if he felt confident in this climate that somebody would pay him $6 million and might not want to chance it. I'm struggling to figure out what these guys are worth this offseason. Is it possible he only gets $4 million offers?
  11. Are they allowed to sign him to a cheaper contract before the deadline? Why not just try to hammer out 5 or 6 million instead of 8 since he probably won't get that much this offseason. Or maybe he would.
  12. To quote you again, this is the only really huge screwup Theo had in my eyes. Last offseason was the time to unload some of these guys for legit prospects and he failed to do it and it can't be done now. Huge missed opportunity.
  13. I would find a five-year rebuild to be unacceptable. I've always said I haven't had any issue with what the Cubs owners had for a payroll in the recent past even when people wanted them to spend more........but the Cubs should be in the top 5 in MLB consistently. And they shouldn't need five years to build a good team with that type of advantage. But, yes, I do realize it appears they might not be willing to have a top 5 payroll.
  14. I don't think you understand this board if you think people here will care about the standings during the first year of a complete teardown. Or I guess maybe I don't understand the board. It will depend, right? Trade Hendricks and Darvish, have a top 10 system heading into the season, and no one will care what the standings are, especially if guys like Marquez debut. Do a blatant salary dump without adding any significant young talent, and yeah, people are going to scream if the team is 20 games out of what looks like it’s going to be a winnable division. With Theo gone and a World Series title, if this team decides to just tank and not have a top 5-7 payroll for multiple years, I won't be bitching because I will have lost total interest.
  15. The time to retool was last offseason -- including trading KB -- and they failed to do it. Too late now.
  16. It does appear that it's all but been determined that Theo won't be back after next season at the latest. Agreed that he isn't just going to walk away from the $10 million he is going to get for 2021, but it wouldn't be shocking to see them come up with an exit plan when they meet. I love Theo and will miss him. Wish he'd stay for another decade, but he did what we all dreamed and hoped he'd do and has more than earned the right to write the end of his Cubs chapter however he wants.
  17. Why do people keep pretending spending money equals wins? They just lost to the team with the lowest payroll in baseball. The resources have been put into this team, the players just aren't good enough. do you think mookie betts would have helped this team this year? dj lemahieu? any of the million bats that signed the last 2 offseasons? obviously the core was a huge problem year, but to say that spending more doesnt help you win is pure idiocy. pointing out exceptions doesnt make it less true. The poster might just be saying that money can't be used as an excuse since they had the fourth-highest payroll this season, one year after having the second-highest. And despite that, the Cubs still weren't very good and that's a big disappointment considering teams spend much less yet are better despite the advantage we have in that department. On the other hand, that might not be what he meant. For the record, I would like to see them spend $400 million since it's not my money and I don't spend much on the team and therefore don't pay huge ticket prices to attend many games. However, I also don't think it's a valid excuse for why we just haven't been very inspiring in the recent past.
  18. Well, unless you are really that excited about buying a 2020 NL Central Champs shirt.
  19. I'm confused by everything. The playoffs are a crap shoot and the Cubs are just a whatever team, but they are in the playoffs already. So, why does it matter if the Cardinals win the division? Like, what is the huge benefit that we are supposed to care about, assuming you care at all about this season?
  20. I know this isn't acceptable, but I really wanted the Cubs to tank this sham season so we could have gotten Kumar Rocker.
  21. Also do we really want to extend our 32 year old 1B who is showing plenty of his own decline? He’s borderline the face of the franchise, his underlying stuff is all within his career norms and he’s not going to take a ton to keep (probably $14-18 mil AAV). I’m absolutely fine with and want to give him a 3-5 year extension and think he’ll age pretty well. KB has contributed greatly to this team, has been an excellent player and by all accounts, a quality person and teammate. But REALLY have to disagree about KB "aging pretty well." What we have seen the past few years with his body breaking down in almost every possible way is not going to get better, it's only going to get worse. He's heading down the Troy Tulowitizki path. The time to trade him was this past offseason. Now, they should let him play out his final year and thank him for all he has done. And, heck, maybe he can prove people like me wrong and mash and stay healthy. ETA: Oh, crap. You were talking about Rizzo. My bad. I have to do better.
  22. Ouch. The 16-team playoff would be a game-changer for me. Can't say I'd totally stop caring because the team has been part of my life since childhood, but...........I'd stop caring a whole lot.
  23. We sort of have six pitchers batting in the lineup, but agree.
  24. I actually always thought I'd hate it, but maybe just because it's a weird season to begin with, I haven't been bothered one bit by it and am fine moving forward with a DH. I know many already were on that bandwagon for years. I've joined late. Plus, it's a disadvantage to NL teams in free agency and trades. I should know this but don't, but I'm really hoping the man on second base to start extras is just this year. It horsefeathering sucks. And horsefeathers this three batter rule. Speeding up a game by 6.4 minutes isn't going to attract thousands of new fans.
  25. Another quick question: Has KB been really crappy this season with runners on base and with runners not on base?
