Just so long as they don't trade for Archer and then sign Yu, it's all good. Funny thing is, even if they made both those moves and lost nothing from their roster, they'd still project more than ten games behind the Cubs by Steamer. Wow. Nice. And we'd gain even more ground again when we sign Cobb or (ducks head) Arrieta.

Villar and a bunch of prospects for Castro and Yellich? They have the minor league talent to pull that off? I could see that, something like Villar, Santana and prospects for those 2. Or else maybe a Fulmer or Archer trade Have seen it could be Ellsbury, essentially buying a prospect by taking his salary. That wouldn’t strike me as “big” but would potentially bring the Yankees back in to the Darvish sweepstakes Brewers also apparently have made a formal offer to Darvish.

Exactly!!!!! Question: Can the Cubs sign Harper and Kimbrel next offseason without penalty? Answer: It doesn’t matter, they don’t invest big money and years into closers.

Or it means they aren’t really that serious about Darvish and are just making sure they explore every avenue. if we aren’t serious on darvish and don’t want arrieta, are we just locked into cobb no matter what? i’m pretty sure i’m the sixth starter right now. going into a season with the rotation depth as it currently stands would be unconscionable for a team that plans to contend. I think they are just waiting to sign the pitcher that takes the fewest years/money or who presents great value. I just don't think in the end Darvish is really going to be that guy. Sure, if they can get him for what the Yanks think they can get him for, they'd jump all over that.

I think he made $2 million last year as a scrub pitcher that nobody cared about. So getting a raise of $1.5 million after putting together a solid year and being a pitcher nobody cares about doesn't seem that crazy.

Still think we are getting Cobb. And after Darvish signs it will come out that we weren’t even close to the numbers he got.

it was darvish or arrieta and yelich vs. cobb and cain that's what i meant. what a tough decision. two good players or two less good players. real sophie's choice. Of course, we also have to take into account that we'd have to perhaps give up multiple other less good players to get Yelich. So it might be between two good players or four less good players. Not sure how the WAR looks on that one yet, depending on who the less good players are.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think Bryce Harper is a Cub next season. Might not happen, but it's not unreasonable to think it will. Especially because Harper is in fact going to be a Cub.

I don't think that part is his opinion or analysis. The Astros and Twins are just the other teams rumored to be interested, IIRC. Yeah, if you look at MLB Trade Rumors, the Twins seem to want to make a move for him, but everyone else's pursuit is pretty lukewarm. There's enough teams out there that his market isn't going to fall to 3/60 or something silly like that, but there's probably a sweet spot of AAV and years that scares off most of those teams that are keeping tabs but is still a fair bit less than what Darvish was expected to get in September. If a majority of teams are lukewarm about the top pitcher on the market, what are we now looking at Arrieta getting and does a reunion become more possible? Not saying I want it, but wondering out loud.

Yeah, I guess in that case I pass on both of them. I agree that Darvish is the better value at that point, but I don't actually think it's necessarily good value. if your plan is to develop young hitters and buy established veteran pitchers, you have to accept the fact that you're not going to be getting awesome value on the pitching side. the cubs really need another good starting pitcher, and there aren't a ton of options out there. i'm all about the future and longevity, but i also want to be really good next year. Here's the thing, though. I think the Cubs will be really good next year already. Not the favorites, but playoff caliber. That's all that matters in the crapshoot of the postseason.

We don’t give up a pick since he was traded mid year. And I’m guessing with this renewed interest they think the market for him may be down on the 6/25 aav Crap. Good point about the pick. I hope you're right about the down market. That would be great.

Question: Even if there are ways to get Yu without screwing us on also getting Harper, is a 31-year-old Yu a guy you want to give six years and $25 million per to along with a draft pick? It seems like a contract we may regret. Or not. Just asking.

I think Harper will have an opt out after the 2021 season when his friend Bryant is a free agent. Hopefully, they both decide to stay. And, yes, I'm already counting on Harper being healthy and a Cub.
