  1. Jeff Samardzija! what a buzzkill
  2. It is hard to root for the junior league but I'd prefer the Twins or the Rays win.... Twins by a hair.
  3. Does Hendry not understand how this process works? is there something i'm missing here? i really feel like i just must not understand the process very well, cause offering him arbitration kind of seems like a no-brainer When a player accepts an offer of arbitration, they are bound to a one year contract. Each side submits a figure, and if a compromise on salary cannot be reached, an arbitrator decides which person made the more compelling argument and awards the figure they requested. (Most everybody already knows this, I'm just trying to be clear). However, the absolute lowest salary that a team can offer is 80% of the player's previous year salary. (This changed from 90% in the last CBA). Therefore, the absolute lowest amount of salary Ted Lilly could have ended up with was 80% of his 12 million salary this year, or 9.6 million dollars. There is certainly a degree of risk in offering a player a contract when you know you'll have to pay them between 9.6 million and whatever number it is they decide to submit. That is, of course, assuming they accept the offer. Most offers of arbitration are made when it is assumed the player will be offered a lucrative multiyear deal elsewhere... hence making the prospect of a one year contract less appealing to them. I would have assumed Lilly would get a 2-4 year contract offer. So I'm not quite sure why we wouldn't offer. But there could be an underlying medical condition that we were afraid would affect his FA appeal. excellent post thank you. I wondered the same.
  4. thx Tim, your commitment is indubitable.
  5. Welcome to the board. I understand what you are saying but Wilkens mo.... we'll see.
  6. NC, you think this is the last go round? or we let him loose now?
  7. great work OMC, interesting to look over the decade and see the work. Some surprising numbers, at places.
  8. Fred, the Stl score is kinda misleading....it's the fourth inning, scared me until I checked it. ;) I thought you were putting up scores by inning.
  9. At this time of the year, 'drafting philosophies' may be one that you can try and tackle, however there will be a bunch of said pieces being created. Knowing only that you are a Cub fan, are you a stat cruncher, video monger, hunch player, how do these translate into who you would draft? Wilken has a reputation, well deserved when you see the production he has acquired, but with the Cubs, Colvin? Cashner? a freaking reliever?@! Of course it is much to soon to grade the drafts and the lower minor are filling, as would be expected by his arrival. thoughts? questions? answers? I could see a piece being created on these lines. But as the draft is soon, sorry, but you don't have much time. Regardless, shoot me an IM, I'd like to see your blog.
  10. You mean Rnez (no O, no D). :D LOL, that's good.
  11. Excellent thread start once again. Just pimping it! Go Cubs.
  12. awesome thread. I haven't participated in a post towards a game thread and I hope that this one will do the trick. Not that Bhoggs thread starts need any help. If the Cubs win, I will post for the remaining 119 and more. go Cubs.
  13. Well you are talking about two people who have some of the best pitches in baseball and can control it consistently. Kerry Wood has a nasty curveball but he can't get it to go for strikes consistently. Also Marmol can do it because he is a RP and guys don't get to see him more than once a game. Cubbie, are you saying that you prefer having Marmol on the team as opposed to Wood? Or because it would be better because of salary constrictions?
