  1. It would be awesome if we could swipe one of these guys somehow. Are we out of the penalty box this coming July to go wild again?
  2. yeah, I have no expectations beyond what Rogers says above (cobb + closer) and a trade for a starting pitcher. sitting on everyone and going with "whoops we still have too many position players and not enough starters" would piss me off, but I really don't think that will happen. We don’t really have too many position players, imo. It’s a strength, for sure, that is available to deal from to fix a weakness (SP) but if we just sign 2-3 SP I’d be fine with keeping everyone. It doesn’t seem like some missed opportunity/worth thinking we screwed up and be pissed about. There’s enough PAs/platoon advantages to get everyone more than enough playing time. Part of me just wants to hold on to everyone for now and sign Cobb+Chatwood+A Bucholz type, especially if value is low and/or we really don’t want to move guys (Russell for example).
  3. I’d be mostly fine with that offseason, still would be favorites for the division short of the Cardinals pulling off like all 5 of the rumored deals they have been linked to. I’d almost prefer this route on the offseason if the value isn’t there for trades. It would be nice to at least be more in the Chatwood type 5 starter tier than total reclamations like Bucholz.
  4. I get the worry and 2015 god mode is never coming back, might get 2-5 start stretches close to it but never for long periods. The reinvention last year kind of encourages me that he can sustain a decent level of success during his next contract, I think he learned how to be more of a pitcher than just rely on pure stuff (which yes it was forced since his stuff diminished) and his stuff is still pretty damn good and he showed he can adapt and learn to be a smarter pitcher to me. I’m not jumping to give him more than 4 years or more than 110 million but this is the second guess I’ve seen now putting him at 4 years and around $100 million, I like that deal for him and would be fine with it.
  5. Fangraphs top 50 FAs and salary predictions is out, Cameron has Arrieta at 4/96 and their crowd source median is 5/110 and average is 4.6/102.5. If his market is the 4/96 Cameron guessed I'd be all over that if we are going to spend any sort of real money on FA pitchers and not go cheap/through trades for it.
  6. i could swear matt spiegel fishes this board for ideas [tweet] [/tweet] i know this could easily be a coincidence but it's not the first time i've heard him come up with ideas on their show that we have kicked around here that haven't been all over cubs twitter and whatnot. I was just listening to this segment, he was cool with a Russell and Happ or Almora trade for Britton and Gausmen and then hope to sign Machado for SS next year. What the hell?!? And it would make sense I guess if he’s fishing here for ideas to pander off as his own. He’s not gonna get checked by a twitter guy or whatever for “stealing ideas” most likely and it can be “original” and generally speaking most of our ideas are semi reasonable/realistic.
  7. *Stupid 3-team trade idea that idk if I even like it or if it’s fair* Giants apparently like Billy Hamilton Giants get: Hamilton Reds get: Happ and a Cubs minor league player or 2 Cubs get: Melancon, Iglesias and Tyler Beede
  8. I guess I forgot he got hurt/wasn’t as good last year. I wonder if like Caritini and Zas would be enough if Moran was all it was going to take?
  9. Of course he's valuable, which is why he would probably get us some of the big name pitchers we've been discussing. I think you're totally exaggerating by saying "It would be devastating to go from him to Baez in 2018", when he showed that he was more than able to replace him when Russell was out with an injury. The defense would suffer at 2B, but not at SS. Also, there is some concern that his injury and off field problems might end up being a problem. Russell is literally the best or 2nd best defensive SS in baseball, Javy is not
  10. I think Angels, Rangers or Mariners for him
  11. I’d rather just spend money on RP’s than trade for and pay the price it would take to get Britton. Unless somehow like a Happ for Britton and Gausmen or Bundy deal was possible but guessing they’d want more.
  12. Is there an official date they announce teams who went over the LT?
  13. Yeah I’m having a hard time seeing how we went over
  14. Looking at the A's roster, since they seem to always be open to trades, Daniel Mengden looks intriguing for a Monty type under the radar acquisition. He will be 25 around the time Spring Training starts, looks like he has a nice mix of pitches FB (92 MP), CT, CB, CH (throws the FB about 55% then the latter 3 about 15% of the time each). He had the 8th best wCB/C of pitchers who threw at least 40 IP. I know Manea has been mentioned as a higher level add but this guy could/should be had for non-Happ (maybe some combo of Caritni, Zagunis, LaStella even, Zas or other minor dudes) or other ML guys like Manea would maybe cost.
  15. Do the Royals have any good young pitchers? I tried to look and didn’t see much but any prospect guys know/think they have anyone good (thinking like top 75-50 prospect with 2/3 upside)? They have some intriguing bullpen arms and with all their position player FA something like Happ and Zagunis for Soria+Karns (some success/familiarity under and with Hickey) and a pitching prospect (Jakob Junis?) if they have one seems to be a workable deal framework.
  16. Holy horsefeathers no, I’m nearly 100% against trading Russell. But in the scenario he’s moved it’s not because he’s one of the most replaceable it’s because he’s one of the most valuable and brings back the most valuable piece(s).
  17. toonsterwu, are you on drugs? These are ridiculous things you are saying
  18. Yes, there is Ellsbury in there that somewhat controls things, but I didn't think I would see anyone else, besides me, suggest an elite prospect/top young talent in a Samardzija trade. And Frazier is pretty damn high up there. 3. Marlins get Christian Arroyo, Seth Corry from the Giants, and Ian Happ and Ben Zobrist from the Cubs; the Giants get Stanton; and the Cubs get Johnny Cueto. So I get the construct of this deal. I toyed with a mock like this involving Samardzija instead. Getting rid of Zobrist would be nice, though, from a financial and roster spot perspective. I'll be honest - I'm not too enthused with Cueto and would rather build a deal around Samardzija. At his best, sure his top level is better than Samardzija's, but his velocity seems to be declining, and well, there's 4/89 left (5 million buyout for 2022). Sure, getting out of the remaining 2/28 for Zobrist helps, but ... I don't know, I've never been as high on Cueto as his performances probably indicate one should be. Tbh, I have a hard time seeing the Marlins agree to that deal unless that's the only deal they can get. I don't particularly love Arroyo or Corry, though.
  19. Looks like he should be coming over unless the union decides to be a bunch of jags
  20. As long as his asking price/market doesn’t go beyond 4 years and ~$75mil guaranteed I kinda just assume we are gonna get him.
  21. Yeah she’s the worst
  22. Yeah that hasn’t been great but I’ve seen enough things I’m encouraged he’s still going to be well above average. He’s averaging 7-8 assists and rebounds a game. The offense will come to a respectable level. At this point I think a Celtics Rondo with better offense and not as good of defense is a pretty good comp.
  23. I definitely could see them not giving out the one big deal (like the Darvish 6/160+). But I think they will (and kinda have to unless there's some crazy trades) spend/commit a good amount in the aggregate on multiple guys to fill holes and it wouldn't surprise me if the total commitment was pushing $90 million (2-3 relief pitchers, at least one SP FA, back up catcher and a backup player if a positional player is traded, plus any traded players salary).
  24. Their RF already hits like Stanton vs us every game
