  1. LOL, nice work Davell I do like that team/offseason quite a bit if we have to do all those cost cutting moves to get Bryce. Also, between the end of the regular season and yesterday it seems like it has been reported that every team has a hesitancy or a limited budget/willingness to spend this offseason, I think the idea we have little money to spend (by choice or by real factors) is a bit overblown and just some typical team positioning going in to the FA period and also writers sensationalizing things. Of course Theo isn’t going to come out bragging about how much money the Cubs have and how willing they are to be signing Bryce and ~4 other guys for half a billion dollars this offseason on day 1 of FA.
  2. Same here. The Cubs are getting Harper I love the Athletic but this article was [expletive]. Over under Harper a Cub by Thanksgiving? Over. But he’s gonna be a Cub. It’s in MLB’s/Boras co best interest to drag it out. I bet he will sign at winter meetings in December (which are in Vegas), it will be some hokey produced announcement thing.
  3. His stuff is ridiculous and he can make major league hitters look foolish. He’s “intriguing” and he’s like behind probably ~5 guys on the Iowa shuttle right now. He’s a fine lottery ticket to keep around if he ever gets the command to even slightly worse than league average levels he could be elite. He’s like the definition of “intriguing option” for a guy who still has minor league options to hang around at no cost. I mean I really don’t care about him. I’d be glad to attach him to Duensing or Kintzler to move money and let another team dream but at worst he’s likely buried in Iowa all year throwing balls to the screen behind a few guys on the call up list while still showing + stuff. He’s the definition of an intriguing arm still.
  4. Yeah like I said McCutchen with Harper is fine. By himself awful. And if Chavez costs more than $3-4 million for 1 year no thanks
  5. Starting a cable network seems like the surest path to making serious money off of streaming rights for an individual MLB team. I might be wrong, but if true they’re almost definitely going to launch a network. he Cubs make what...$80-$100 million a year under their current media rights deals? Is $150+ out of the picture? I think YES does more than that for the Yankees, like alot more, largely thanks to their streaming service (also some really friendly terms on their FOX now Disney deal) $77, we have a garbage deal right now. We should be able to clear $100 million easily.
  6. FA officially opened 2.5 hours ago
  7. The Phillies got $2.5 billion over 25 years 4 years ago. Maybe $3-4 billion over the same period, if not more if we do our own network? Fangraphs had an article https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/cubs-payroll-set-to-soar-with-potential-tv-deal/
  8. He’s def turned more in to a doom boner/hot take clicks since he’s been at the athletic
  9. horsefeathering gross on McCutchen if he’s the only move. That doesn’t move any needles. If he’s part of the Bryce FU offseason, sure.
  10. Kind of surprised by both sides on this. Would’ve figured he’d want more years and overall money and the Dodgers would want a lower AAV if they did an extension (something like 5/135).
  11. Bryce has a Bulls hat on in his latest Instagram post. Probably means the deal is done, imo. Also early voting today to fly to Chicago for the weekend/next week in all likelihood.
  12. Wouldn’t mind reuniting Hickey and Moore in the right circumstance (probably not a major league deal) and try him as a RP/swingman
  13. His stuff is ridiculous and he can make major league hitters look foolish. He’s “intriguing” and he’s like behind probably ~5 guys on the Iowa shuttle right now. He’s like the definition of “intriguing option” for a guy who still has minor league options to hang around at no cost.
  14. I’ve always had an irrational like for him as a RP option, the stuff and tools seem there. But he’s always sucked. I still wouldn’t mind a minor league deal.
  15. I noticed it right away and nearly horsefeathers myself Yeah that’s the first thing I noticed and thought he threw the ball in to the stands off his hand. I’m pretty sure I even shouted out “oh horsefeathers” when it was happening.
  16. I’d love one of Doolittle or Smith. I also like Chavez back for real cheap and I guess JDLR on a minor league deal with a call up date type deal would be fine.
  17. I’m hoping the scenario is they realized Smyly is too big of a question mark to go in to the year with and doesn’t have options so it would be tough to give him a roster spot. They saw an opportunity to dump his $7 mil salary and $5 LT and plan to use that to get a more dependable/healthy arm to add to the bullpen/depth.
  18. Yeah I also believe that something like this is really what’s going on. I also could see that writers caught wind we were working a trade with Texas (because we knew we could likely get them to take something instead of just eating $6 mil and it was an easy way to shed some money) and jumped to conclusions about what that actually meant for the whole offseason in terms of what we have to spend and how willing that is.
  19. I was wrong about this last year, but I would be very surprised if the luxury tax number went that low. I think it's a fair bit more likely it exceeds 40 than fails to reach 30. I think he’ll fall between 28 and 35, 40 aav will be tough, imo. But I think he will set the total contract record, which is Stanton’s $325.
  20. Yeah I should’ve added that with this news my ~275 number is in serious doubts about how realistic it is. But that was my expectation up until this news came out (I roughly thought we could do like ~275, ~265, ~250, the next 3 years with expiring contracts and smart structures of new deals). Hopefully it’s just some posturing by the Cubs to get the Rangers to take a contract back or something. And if we are capped well below that, then $8.5 million for Kintzler and Duensing does actually mean something.
  21. I expect a payroll up to ~$275 this offseason if Bryce is included and most of the other deals being 1 or 2 year deals that could help get us back under max penalties within 2 years and possibly a full re-set within 2 years.
  22. Eh, giving a 34 year old pitcher $20 million isn’t necessary for an FU offseason. I’m a Hamels fan but the best window for him on the Cubs was under the non-option years of that 2012 extension thanks to the [expletive] salary cap If they’re having to jump through crazy hoops to bring back a 34 year old pitcher they apparently really want I’m worried about how much money they really have to spend. That being said. There has to be some leverage with the Rangers here if they’re on the hook for the $6 million buyout. Tell them instead of just eating $6 million in cash they can take back a Kintzler and we’ll give them Zack Short and a pitching prospect or some horsefeathers for a PTBNL
