  1. ahem, cough cough. sorry, just clearing my throat. I've got some crow to eat on this one. I was one of those fans who didn't believe the Giants fans on Dusty. That's a big plate of crow. I better get started.
  2. Sounds to me like Cox is talking Pena up. The guy had a .312 OBP in AAA last season as a 25-year-old. He might be good with the glove, but so are a lot of guys.
  3. This is almost exactly like something Dusty said. Yeah, I seem to remember that, too. Of course, any manager of a team that has a shot of getting into the post season is saying things like this, especially during spring training. I guess from Lou's perspective, its the nice way of saying, I'm not managing the Devil Rays anymore.
  4. Watch, the Cubs pick up Brendan Harris off of waivers just so Hendry can revel in the fact that he has both Harris and Murton on his team. He takes pictures with his arms draped over both of them laughing and emails them to Theo Epstein who promptly snaps a photo of himself wearing his world series ring and emails Jim right back. After sobering up, Hendry cuts Harris and gets serious about finding a decent reserve middle infielder. Seriously, the Cubs seem to have a surplus of pitching that should be good enough to bring in a worthwhile reserve infielder. So which teams need pitching the most?
  5. Completely agree. That's why I've repeatedly said that these stats are meaningless. But, right now, they're all we've got. I hate waiting...
  6. Patience update... The Cubs walked 6 times on Tuesday against 9 strikeouts. That's 57 walks in 14 games if I've remembered correctly. That's an average of 4.07 walks per game...so far.
  7. I wouldn't mind a trade at all. So long as its not another Freddie Bynum.
  8. Barring injuries, I think this is the most likely 25-man roster at the moment... Zambrano Lilly Marquis Hill Miller Dempster Howry Eyre Wood Ohman Cotts Cherry Soriano Murton Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett DeRosa Izturis Blanco Ward Theriot Cedeno Floyd Guzman could replace either Miller or Cherry if the Cubs think he won't be wasted in the bullpen. But that might be it. What's your predicted final 25?
  9. Bad news for Angel Pagan. Looks like the more Piniella thinks about it, the more he wants to make the 5th bench player an infielder. With the ability of Floyd, Ward, Theriot and DeRosa to play the OF, the need Piniella sees is for more depth in the infield. As much as I want Cedeno starting in AAA this season is as much as I don't want Perez to make the 25-man roster. Maybe having Cedeno around Alan Trammell, Gerald Perry and Lou would be beneficial to his development as well.
  10. Not saying it means anything, just reporting the facts, but Monday marks the 2nd consecutive day the Cubs had a 1:1 K/BB ratio with 5 each. That brings their spring totals to 68 Ks and 51 BBs through 13 games. That ratio is well above league average this spring, but with such a small sample size, the fact that its spring training stats and the unlikelihood of a team's patience to change this quickly, its highly doubtful this will continue into the season.
  11. Sounds right. If it's a 12 man pen, then the 5th and final bench spot is Pagan's job to lose.
  12. Patience update... The Cubs on Sunday once again had a 1:1 K/BB ratio with 5 Ks and 5 BBs bringing their spring totals to 63 Ks against 46 BBs through 12 games.
  13. Tribune That's the polite way of saying it's Pagan's job to lose, and there is still time left for him to lose it. Pagan has been dealing with an injury to his side which has limited him a bit defensively and had him only hit from the right side when normally he is a switch-hitter. The fact that Coats is a lefty would have improved his chances, but with both Ward and Floyd on the roster, hitting from the left side won't help Coats much in the Cubs decision making. I don't know if there is anything Coats can do to win the job. He could hit .500 over the next 3 weeks, but if Pagan shows he is ready, the job is Angel's. Now if Floyd starts the season on the DL...
  14. In some ways, that is actually a better result than Prior winning the spot. If the Gooz can get the job done and help the Cubs win games while Prior hopefully rebuilds his arm strength and refines his mechanics, the Cubs will have found yet another option for the rotation. Adding Hill, Guzman, Lilly and Marquis in essentially a seven month period of time will have given the Cubs a lot of depth and options. If Guzman is able to perform well, this spring would be the first in 3 years where the Cubs would be without the services of an effective/healthy Prior yet still be in good shape rotation-wise.
  15. Cherry might go north the way he is throwing. Wuertz will likely rehab a bit and then start the season in AAA.
  16. Nope, third. HA! You may be faster, but... LOL, that's why I put a question mark. Just giving ya a hard time...
  17. Marquis seems to have rediscovered his sinker. He's looking very good. I'd caution against saying he has looked "very good". Maybe very good for Marquis but not in general. I agree that the sinker appears to be working, but he just gave up 6 hits to a spring line-up about half filled with minor leaguers. Now the type of pitcher he is, he's going to give up hits. Hitters are going to make contact off of him, but Marquis can influence what type of contact that will be. He's been effective. He's getting the job done. The defense is going to have to be on their toes when he is pitching because balls will be hit.
  18. Effective. He gave up some hits, 6 in 4 innings, but he also induced a couple of inning ending double plays. All told he produce 6 ground ball outs against 2 fly ball outs in 4 innings of play.
  19. Nope, third. HA! You may be faster, but...
  20. So does Santo. He just said that Cherry has a very good chance of making the Cubs. EDIT: Vance! Gahh, just beat me...
  21. I think it's what he needs. He has to work on getting his game back. He shouldn't be focused on being in competition right now. I agree. It's what he needs right now. For whatever reason, (health, mechanics, simple muscle weakness) he's not performing. The question remains whether he will ever be the pitcher he once was. But whatever the reason or eventual outcome, he needs to work on stuff. Confidence, mechanics, all of it. Where he works on that is immaterial. He just needs to improve. When he is ready, if he is ever ready, he will return.
  22. I went with the MyFi and a pair of really old computer speakers. It's not quite as nice as the boombox, but I can take it anywhere with me. Hey man, it works.
  23. Listening to the game on an XM Boombox is awesome. I'm doin' yardwork, I got the game. I'm kickin' back in the sun with a beverage, I got the game. Come inside to get online, I got the game. If you live outside the Chicago area and can't get the Cubs on regular radio, and you can afford the 13 bucks a month for the programming and the 80 bucks for the boombox, do it. That said, I see Izturis walked two more times today to bring his spring total to 5. Is it sad that I'm actually keeping track of how many times Izturis draws a walk? The Cubs as a whole drawing 5 walks against 5 Ks so far today. That makes their spring season total 43 BBs/55 Ks. A good but meaningless ratio.
  24. With Pie, Patterson, Cedeno, Moore and Soto all headed, or at least ideally headed in the case of Cedeno, to AAA this season, there will be a decent amount of fairly young positional talent (non-roster-filler-types) in Iowa this season. When you combine those guys with a possible staff of Guzman, Mateo, Marshall, Gallagher and possibly Marmol if he's not closing (among others), I might have to vacation in Des Moines this summer.
  25. Rocky Cherry seems to be giving him a run for his money at the moment...
