  1. Awesome news. Spend the unlimited amounts while you can. The dude is 18, left-handed and has already had some success. Very happy to hear it!
  2. Awesome.
  3. Apparently, it's a multi-year contract to be Special Assistant to the self-described Director of Spending Brian Cashman. Let the discussion commence...
  4. I don't care about changing your opinion, I just think it's asinine to whine about "silly back and forth" on a freaking message board which exist solely because of silly back and forth. I agree with you. Anyone who whines about the silly back and forth is wasting their breath and just adding to the silly back and forth which I have no problem with and enjoying doing from time to time. Case in point, our conversation about threads. However, a message board does not solely exist because of silly back and forth. I don't know where you get that.
  5. I really don't understand this. Off the radio. I guess you'd have to read the post in context to understand it. A) Radio doesn't provide much in the terms of breaking news. B) If you give a crap about it it is extremely easy to listen to radio in other cities. C) If any Chicago area radio station breaks anything remotely interesting it will be everywhere else momentarily. Not everywhere. But usually here faster than most. What's it to you where I go for my breaking Cubs news? I never complained about the banter in threads like this. I never said it shouldn't be here. I just posted some actual info on what Kevin Goldstein thinks, said that actual info is better than banter and made a joke about it. If you'd like to try to change my opinion on this or ridicule me for liking actual info over silly back and forth, go right ahead. I just don't have time to join in right now. Gotta go.

  7. I live in rural Iowa and get pretty darned up-to-the-minute Cubs updates. Yep. Iowa is Cubs country. How do you do on getting the Dodger updates on the sports talk radio?
  8. Which is why I posted some actual information on the subject. Some people like to follow along with the rumors and hard information as it is breaking instead of waiting for the final result to show up in the updated title. It's like actually watching the baseball game and riding it's ups and downs instead of reading the box score. So ask the admins to create a news-only thread about the guy. People bull [expletive] about the topic at hand is also part of the process. I never complained about it. I fully accept it's part of the process. I just posted what Kevin Goldstein had to say and made a joke about it.
  9. Not to mention, that if something is going to happen, reading through this thread is not a particularly good place to find out about it. Actually, if there weren't pages of off topic stuff, it would be. It's why I come to NSBB in the first place. It's a clearinghouse of information on the Cubs. When someone hears something on Chicago sports talk radio or reads a tweet, they generally come here and post it. I don't do the twitter thing too much and I live in Los Angeles, so I don't get the breaking reports on Chicago sports. This is one of the best places to find out about stuff like that if not for the off topic stuff.

  11. Please don't. I don't find this half as annoying as pages of discussion on how to say his name. Maybe that's just me being bitter after seeing new posts and mistakingly thinking it is new information. New information you say? Kevin Goldstein thinks the Cubs will get Cespedes. Link to Baseball Prospectus Podcast If there's one thing I've learned it's to take these types of things with a grain of salt. By lunch time the Marlins will be favored and before I go to bed it will be the White Sox. By the time I wake tomorow morning, a mystery team will have swooped in and a deal will be imminent. If there's one thing I've learned it's that new information that actually applies to the thread in question is always better than the inane banter that precedes it. You may now begin the 3 page discussion of whether the word 'precedes' impacts the way Cespedes should be pronounced.
  12. Good catch. Definitely.

  14. Moving a pretty good market from the NL to the AL isn't going to help balance against the AL having more good markets. yes, but they're moving the Astros. Yes, and Houston ranks as the 10th best TV market in the nation. They have a loyal fan base, and a recent and still popular stadium. They're just going through a rebuilding phase at the moment.
  15. I really want the Fielder signing to mean that the Tigers are going all in and will now be more willing to trade away their future for a better now, but the truth is the Fielder signing could be good, bad or meaningless in regards to a Garza trade. Your scenario is a sound argument in favor of, but it just as easily could mean that after spending 214 million dollars, the Tigers value young, inexpensive pitching now more than ever. Unfortunately, I don't think we know anything more than we did at the start of the day. All we got is [expletive] tea leaves and they can be interpreted any way we like.
  16. If only Pena's wasn't going to drop. Still, it's the best draft situation the Cubs have had since '02 when they had 6 picks in the top two rounds. Sorry, I shouldn't have brought up the '02 draft. I just went from feeling optimism about this year's picks to crashing with the memory of the fact that none of the guys selected with those 6 picks ever fulfilled their promise. Luke Hagerty Matt Clanton Bobby Brownlie Chadd Blasko Justin Jones Brian Dopirak In my head, I hear a bell chime after reading each name. The only player from the '02 draft to contribute significantly to the big league club was a catcher drafted in the 38th round. Randy Wells. Justin Jones did help the Cubs net Nomar...
  17. Why would the Tigers ever want Soto? Because Soto is one of the Cubs' better chips? If the Tigers are going to give up a bunch of prospects for Garza, getting Soto back may make the trade easier for them to swallow. So you're proposing Soto to be a throw-in? I'm not proposing that, but I think it would explain why the Tigers would have interest in Soto. It would also buy them some options and increase their chances of winning now if they can move Avila for something really good. We all agree that Soto's value is at catcher, if the Tigers window truly is only a couple of years, then they could really help themselves buy trading Avila. Maybe they've got a taker... Imagine Detroit acquiring Garza, Soto and someone else who will be really good for the next couple of years. That roster would be ready to compete.
  18. Anyone else hear the rumor that the Tigers would be willing to trade Turner and Castellanos for Garza and Soto? From the discussion page on another blog, wonder where it came from. Anyone?
  19. Yeah, it is way too early still, especially on the HS arms, but there are enough of them that I can be hopeful the Cubs will get a TOR type with the 6th pick. Obviously, Appel and Giolito are the top two arms at the moment, but that can all change come June. After them is Lance McCullers, Max Fried, Kevin Gausman, Chris Beck, Walker Weichel and whoever else might emerge before the draft. If for whatever reason, there isn't a legit TOR prospect there at 6, then I hope the Cubs go with best talent available, but I've got my hopes set on a potential ace and, at this point, it looks like there are enough of them to have one fall to the Cubs at 6..
  20. Yeah, Gary Sheffield immediately came to mind for me as well with a dash of Glenallen Hill.
