  1. I don't disagree with you at all, I just have a bad feeling that Gaudin doesn't have much value and will be dumped for nothing. I just hope there right about Patton if thats the case.
  2. There's no way we get that for Gaudin at this point. We would be lucky to get Gaudin for Baker straight up. The Rockies will probably also ask a arm and a leg for Patton rights. When teams see rule 5 picks, doing really well they usually don't like to give up there rights. Unless they get a prospect they really like back. I have a feeling if Gaudin is traded, it will probably be for nothing. I really hope I'm wrong though.
  3. Normally I would agree, but when the guy has shown no signs of pitching at that level anymore it kills his value. I recall Jerome Williams value tanking in a simliar situation in 06. Because of is track record, teams will be interested and wanna take a flyer on him. But these days, a 2m salary for a reliever/spot starter is kinda a bit of a risk to take a flyer on. Due to his salary I don't really see the Cubs getting anything of value for him. Thats why I hope they don't trade him. But it's probably gonna come down to if they like Gaudin or Patton better and who they think will be better in 09. If the Cubs really truely think Patton is gonna be better then Gaudin this season. Then they probably will trade Gaudin for a player to be name later or some crap. Because they can't keep Patton, Guzman and Gaudin, so someone has to go. But who knows maybe if the Cubs eat Gaudin salary, they could get a decent prospect. I really do hope he's not traded, but right now he looks like the odd man out. Trading Gaudin will only cause us to be looking for a long man/spot starter at some point during the season.
  4. We already have German, if we weren't gonna try Gathright to start the season German would have made the team. So I don't see us taking a flyer on anyone else.
  5. Marshall was pretty close to lights out this spring, he was due to get his butt kicked one of these games.
  6. If we're dumping somebody, I'd still prefer it to be Vizcaino rather than Gaudin or Guzman. It all depends on what we get in a deal for Gaudin or Guzman, though. If one of them nets us somebody pretty good, I can live with it. If we're basically cutting them, though, then I'd much rather try to move out Vizcaino. Yes but dumping Vizcaino cost double as dumping Gaudin, and Vizcaino has pitched good enough to make the roster. Plus I still think Vizcaino can be a valueable piece to the pen, when facing mostly RH hitters in close games. While Gaudin really hasn't pitch good since mid August. Personally I hope Gaudin and Guzman are both on the team on opening day. Patton is interesting, but I think Guzman will be better once he gets out of Arizona(didn't pitch all that great in 07 spring either). Gaudin is struggling right now, but I think he can get it figured out at some point. His track record would say he's a pretty solid reliever or back end starter. So it would hurt to lose Gaudin, when we expected to have him as insurance for Harden this season.
  7. Not really since the Cubs brought Gaudin back, and he was pretty much a lock to make the team until 2-3 weeks ago. But right now mixed with the way he struggled last year, and the fact that he's shown no signs of improving this spring. Now he appears to be in Lou doghouse, and could be the odd man out. Personally I hope Gaudin is on the roster on opening day. He's still a good pitcher to have a around who's struggling now. But once he figures it out he should help the roster.
  8. Vizcaino had a slow start, but he's actually pitched pretty well this spring. With how much money he makes, and the fact he actually pitched pretty well. He's pretty much a lock to make the team right now. It really is down to two spots with four guys fighting for the job. Samardzija does appear to be the long shot, since he has options. So it's really down to Patton, Guzman and Gaudin for two spots. Hendry might try to trade Guzman or Gaudin, or try to make a deal to keep Patton. The decision probably won't be made until Saturday, unless a move is made before then.
  9. He threw mostly fastballs in the first inning, and got to mid 90s a few different times. Since he's been throwing mostly change ups I believe.
  10. I know Gaudin doesn't have options left. But is there any way to send him to Triple A? With his horrible spring, some team might not claim him when he makes 2m this season.
  11. Very smart move, I think Gregg will be a pretty solid closer for us. I expect him to be somewere around 35 of 41 in saves, with a 3.30-3.50 era this season. Now Marmol can be the weapon he was in the 7th and 8th the last two years. Hopefully Heilman is the 05-07 Heilman this season, and could give Marmol a breather. Bob Howry sucking caused Marmol to be overworked a tad too much last year.
  12. German has been really bad since the second half of 07. I still hope the Cubs can keep in him Triple A though. He would be a good guy to call up, if we have a injury. Or the Cubs feel that Gathright isn't that asset they thought he would be.
  13. I agree he's looked awful against LH pitchers when I saw him play this spring. He had alot of trouble making contact against Zito tonight and even Buerhle last Sat. If this keeps up, I'm sure we will see alot of Aaron Miles against LH pitchers.
  14. Yeah Gaudin has had a bad spring with a 10.03 era in 11.2 innings with 8 walks and only 7 strike outs. Lucky for Gaudin, Samardzija has a 9.00 era in 11 innings, and Guzman has a 9.00 era in 8 innings. Right now it looks like there's three spots for Gaudin, Vizcaino, Guzman, Patton and Samardzija. With the way Gaudin struggled late in the year and this spring. I'm a little worried about him not making the team. But he also has a 4.71 era in 50 career starts, and has a 4.34 era in 40 starts over the last two years. So hopefully his track record will get him a spot on the team. As much as Lou dislikes Gaudin, I think he dislikes Vizcaino more because he's only effective against RH hitters. Hopefully Lou is smart enough to start Samardzija in Triple A. Lets keep Gaudin and Guzman, then see if we can find anyone to take Vizcaino off our hands. If we can't then lets try to make a deal to keep Patton, otherwise we will have to let him go. But starting Samardzija in Triple A, is a no brainer since we can call him up if one of these other pitchers struggle.
  15. I wouldn't be so sure about that. If Samardzija gets sent to the minors and we need a spot start, we would probably turn to the long man. Chad Gaudin looks like he will probably be the long guy and spot starter. Sure if a guy is on the DL, then we would go with Samardzija. But were not gonna make a roster move for one random start. I would tend to think that Heilman would be penciled in as the spot starter... he's certainly done nothing to persuade me otherwise. Lou said he's going to be the 7th inning guy, Lou even used him for one inning yesterday. It's hard to be a short reliever pitching the 6th through 8th inning three or four days a week and then start random games. If Heilman is gonna be the spot starter, he needs to be the long guy and only pitch a few days a week like Marshall and Lieber last year. Only having Heilman in the pen for two days a week, and mostly using him in blow outs or extra inning games is wasting him. Thats why Gaudin will probably get that spot, especially with starting alot in the past.
  16. Lou said that Heilman is probably going to be the 7th inning guy. It's gonna be pretty hard for Heilman to make spot starts, when he's being used as a short reliever. Especially when he hasn't really started since 05. I think Heilman as a starter is done for now, unless a guy in our rotation has a major injury and will be out for a few months. If for some reason Harden starts the season on the DL, we will just skip the 5th spot for a few weeks, with Gaudin being the long guy. Right now I think Gaudin role on this team is as the long guy/spot starter, so it's not a surprise he's starting or getting innings. Because using Heilman as the long guy would be kinda of a waste of his ablity. He either needs to be a starter, or late inning reliever.
  18. Ryan Dempster looks to have left off right were he was last season. He now has a 1.56 era in 17.1 IP with 15 strike outs and only 4 walks. Kevin Gregg also is pitching like he did the the first four and half months of last year before his leg injury. Theriot/Fontenot are also hitting alot like they did last year. Derrek Lee is having a poor spring like he did last year, but hopefully that means he will have a big April like last year to. If he does have a big April again hopefully that won't be the only big month he has.
  19. Well Lou said 350-400, I assume it will be closer to 350 depending on health. But thats what Miles has gotten almost every year of his career, and I always expected him to get AB's in that range. He will be getting 120 AB's or so against LH pitching while platooning with Fontenot. Then he will get the 220 AB's or so that Cedeno got last year. When you only have one back up infielder, he's gonna end up with a good amount of AB's. If the Cubs end up with adding another back up infielder, then there's no way Miles will get that many AB's though. But with the current roster as is, he will probably get that many AB's. If Miles for some reason ends up with alot less AB's(then usual), who knows his numbers might be alot better.
  20. But in 06 he hit 291/378/738 against LH pitching as well, so it wasn't just 08. Plus even though is OPS wasn't good against LH pitchers in 07, he still had a 368 OBP against them. I don't have a problem with giving Fontenot a chance against LH pitchers, but from what we have to go on right now. Miles looks like better bet against LH pitching. So I don't have a problem with Lou going with a platoon.
  21. Thats what it basically was last year though, and we did pretty well against LH pitchers. Fukudome was the only regular LH hitter in the line-up and he rarely played against LH pitchers late in the year. I know the current plan is for Fukudome to be in a platoon with Reed Johnson, but if he's hitting well he will get plenty of starts against LH pitching. I think the platoon in CF is something the Cubs rather not do if they can. I think it's more of a back up plan, and use to take some pressure off Fukudome.
  22. I agree it doesn't sound stupid to me either. Fontenot-247/305/675 - last two years against LH pitching Miles-297/374/732- last three years against LH pitching So against LH pitching we could get either simliar production to 08 Theriot from 2b, or simliar production to 08 Cedeno? I don't think it will be a strict platoon, but this is what I think Lou will usually go with. Playing Fontenot everyday will probably make him closer to a 750-760 OPS guy, but play him against mostly RH pitching, and in a platoon. We could get close to 800 OPS from the 2b postion, even with Miles OPS bring it down. It still won't bring it down nearly as low as Fontenot would.
