    .... as it stands on Sept. 22nd, the Cubs will have a protected first round pick (#12 overall) in the '06 amateur draft. So, unless they go on a tear to end the season (yeah right!), they at least won't lose their first round pick if they go out and sign a type A free agent this offseason. Too bad there are slim pickings projected.... but at least Hendry can be aggressive (if he is indeed interested in any of Giles/Furcal/Burnett/etc.) and not risk a potentially high-impact draft pick. /lemonade outta lemons.

    The Cubs have put themselves in a very bad position -- they had a terrible year (vs. payroll/expectations), have a ton of money available, and a sub-par free-agent market to spend it on... a recipe for disaster IMO (disaster being defined as overpaying for crap). Any projections on the FAs that may be available after 2006? If I recall correctly, the outfield options are much better if the Cubs can wait a year to make a big splash in free agency. I would not mind the Cubs going with a cheaper payroll / youth movement to start '06 and then spending big at the deadline or after the 2006 season. Then again .... 98 years and counting may force Hendry's hand. If so, get the best talent and pay for it -- whatever Jim does, he better not settle for mid-tier talent to plug the holes. Either get Giles or go young at RF, get Furcal or go with Cedeno, etc. No retreads in 2006 please.

    According to this press release, Kerry will be having his surgery this Wednesday.

    Johan Santana wasn't exactly crippled by being kept in the pen by the Twins as a rule 5 pick. I think its premature to say that this year in the pen has stunted his development. Given the success he had against major league hitting, one could argue that this experience really helped Andy get closer to his potential.

    I'm expecting that Macias will start at 3rd and Cedeno will rot on the bench. The only question is what stupid spot in the lineup will we find the gremlin in. :|

    Why would the Mets deal Floyd? They are in the hunt for the NL Wild Card and need his offense if they are going to make a run at it --- especially with another of their outfielders in Cameron on the DL.

    Corey's speed makes it less likely that a shift will ever be employed against him. He could just slap a bunt down the 3rd base line every time if the shift was on......

    There is a bit of risk in giving DLee a big deal after this season. I love having Derrek at 1B and would like him on the Cubs for a few more years, but paying him a premium for 1 breakout year and then have him fall back to career norm production would not be a good idea. Not to mention the Cubs have a couple of league-minimum 1B options in the farm system that could be ready to produce at the ML-level in another year or two. I would not be surprised if Hendry waits to see how he produces to start 2006 before getting serious about an extension.

    He has the following line in his short time with the Cubs: AVG OBP SLG OPS .271 .286 .375 .661 This is well below his career line of: AVG OBP SLG OPS .269 .370 .421 .791 If he can get closer to his career line by end of 2005, I think the Cubs have to give serious consideration to bringing him back. It is doubtful that the Cubs will find another .370 OBP leadoff option in free agency or in house in time for opening day 2006. His current salary (~$8M) seems steep for his services, so I'd like to see a 2-year deal that would bring that down (not sure to what though.....)

    The IP clause is a performance-based clause. MLBPA prevents wins, ERA, and other more obvious performance-based clauses from being in any player contracts. You can't have a saves clause in the contract, but you can have incentives based on games "finished".... the irony is that a lot of the blown saves Latroy had were credit towards his games-finished incentives. I disagree that FAs would take the Cubs' dumping of a future HOFer and class-act like Maddux as the "right" message. It would kill any ability for the GM to negotiate incentives into any contracts. The Cubs would have to effectively overpay free agents to come to Chicago. Not a good idea on many levels IMO.

    Can we really know any of this to be true until we give these guys some playing time at the ML-level? My point is it is critical for the Cubs to find out what players from within their farm system can in fact be relied on to contribute next year and beyond. Without getting them up here to find out -- we are all just guessing.

    I know I really enjoyed the energy, life and desire of Hill today while watching him get torched. You prefer watching seasoned veterans getting torched?

    Not only would this be a bad PR move, but if Maddux was DFA'd and no one traded for him in 10 days.... he would be free to sign with any team and the Cubs would still be on the hook for his $9mil next year minus the league minimum (even if he reached his 400 IP clause on another team).... and, knowing Cub-luck, he'd probably be pitching lights out for St. Louis to boot.
