  1. I think The O's and Ponson pulled it off.
  2. I'd love to see him hitting 5th. I don't understand everyone insisting he should be batting leadoff. The team is not winning with him batting leadoff and I seriously doubt they would be any worse if he moved to 5th. Theriot batting leadoff with Murton 2nd followed by Lee, Aram, and Soriano. It has possibilities. Do something, anything. The status quo is not working. I would hate to see him hitting 5th. In 8 full ML seasons, Soriano has rarely shown the ability to hit well with RISP. All of his best offensive numbers are produced at leadoff. While it can be argued that he will probably only "leadoff" once a game, it's still pretty clear that he hits the best from the top of the order (and has his best OBP). I don't know if it's a simple matter of "comfort" or being at ease mentally or if he just can't hit a curveball... either way, I could see Aramis being pitched around quite a bit. I don't necessarily agree with this. You could pretty much say the same thing with any of our other hitters behind Aramis. Soriano is a bigger threat than anyone else that might hit behind Ramirez. I would agree with leaving Soriano at leadoff if we were winning. Unfortunately we're not.

It has possibilities. Do something, anything. The status quo is not working. He's a better hitter hitting leadoff. Maybe it's a mental thing... He's had a lot more opportunity batting leadoff. A hitter will hit no matter where they bat him. What is the worst that can happen to try it? The Cubs lose some games?
  4. You have no basis to assume this team will win 8-13 more games this year. 22-140 sounds about right.

  6. I don't think anyone can say with any amount of certaintity that Murton will be above average if he plays everyday. I think his OBP could be above average and he should be batting 2nd but his (lack of) power is going to mean he's below average for a corner OF batting anywhere other than 2nd. On a side note...I don't like his wide open stance where he has no stride into the ball when he swings. I wonder if this could be affecting his power. I know Bagwell hit this way but Murton is no Jeff Bagwell.
  7. Oh wait. I was in the other room, he brought him in to face 3 rightys? You have got to be freaking kidding me? To be fair, there was one LH hitter at the beginning. You know, the guy that walked. Yeah, and he had him 0-2 and then walked him.
  8. Awesome. Thanks Will. Leadoff walks are beautiful.
  9. WOW! A CATCHER BLOCKED A PITCH IN THE DIRT! WHO KNEW!!!???
  10. Why go 0-2 on a hitter and then nibble? Stupid players all around.
  11. Apologize. :D I'm sorry. (a good 2B would have had that though.)
  12. Cubs get a break. Bet they don't take advantage of it like teams do against them.
  13. How many million did that solo shot cost us?
  14. He's short players. Murton as a sore back. I guess I should just be glad he K'd instead of hitting into a DP.
  15. JJ in the lineup against a lefty? Lou should be taken out back and beaten severly.
  16. They are both a couple of idiots. It's a lot harder to replace Z than Barrett. A lot of people are talking like Z's career is over. He's still a young man with his best years ahead of him. Some people take longer to mature. I'm not ready to throw him on the trash heap just yet even if has been pretty bad this year. He's not the first to choke during a contract year. Barrett on the other hand is just flat useless as a baseball player when he doesn't hit...and he isn't hitting. He really needs to be a DH. The problem though is I can't see us getting anything for him. Why would any GM give us anything. They know the Cubs probably can't keep him around this team plus he's going to be a FA at the end of the year. Hendry may have to release him just to keep peace in the clubhouse. That would be drastic but stranger things have happened. Pretty sad day in Cubdom all around.
  17. I'd rather not see Jones, Murton, Pagan, Ward, DeRosa, Theriot, or Floyd in the Cubs outfield. Soriano has to be there since we're paying him eleventy billion dollars a year. It's Pie time. Bring him up and stick him out there. For our 3rd outfielder they should just pick random people out of the stands each inning. I'm pretty sure our defense would improve over what we've seen. If we can't do that I guess play Murton and bat him 2nd...and only 2nd. And for Gods sake, move him back to LF Lou!!!
  18. So, I hear the Cubs vowed to not score again this season in their players only meeting. It's working to perfection.
  19. Yeah I guess that would be the one thing. I'd rather let Lou & Hendry pigeonhole Murton this season. Hopefully with the new owner they'll both be gone and then we can find out about Murton next year. We already know what we have with Murton. A #2 hitter that Lou won't put there.
  20. Certainly Blanco's offense is terrible, but he's still a well-respected defensive catcher and really puts Barrett to shame in that department. The real problem isn't that we might have to play a defense-only catcher. Many teams do, and they win with it. It's just that the rest of our offense down in the order is so terrible it creates a black hole 7,8,9. I'm getting sick of watching Barrett throw games down the toilet so either he needs to get his head out of his ass or we need another catcher. If you think you're sick of Barrett making a boneheaded mistake every few games, wait until you get that sinking feeling in your chest when Blanco is coming up to bat in crucial situations... which is likely to happen much more often than Barrett getting picked off. Every few games? It's been more than once per game lately. And his bat hasn't been all that great anyway. I already cringe when Barrett comes to bat, not going to be much difference with Blanco sucking too. At least Blanco won't throw the ball behind a damn runner, which any little league catcher knows not to do. Comparing Barretts defense to a little league catcher is pretty darn insulting...to the little league catchers of the world! :D
  21. I'll bet, in his mind, there is no validity to any of a sportswriters ideas (or message board poster). And that's quite unfortunate. Because, he could learn a lot hanging out here. At least he earned enough money from the Cubs these past 5 years to retire, since that's probably what he'll have to do once he's gone from this organization. Who, in their right minds, would give him another chance? He was given the GM job with an ever increasing payroll, one of the top minor league organizations in baseball and much roster flexibility (limited guaranteed long term contracts. The sky was the limit. Basically, he was given what any GM would dream of having at their disposal. How is that working out right now? Not so good. Yes it is unfortunate that he can't see the things that are wrong. But what can you expect from a guy that thought he pulled off the deal of the century when he traded Maddux for Izturis? He was strutting around like a fat cat with a canary feather sticking of its mouth because he was such a smart guy that outfoxed the Dodgers.

  23. I'm not disputing whether or not he was visibly drunk, but I wonder what the people who didn't come forward to be interviewed thought. I mean, if you were a regular at Shannon's and you thought the suit was BS, and it wasn't obvious that Hancock was plastered, wouldn't you come forward to tell the police that? Great catch. I agree that this is a major setback for the plaintiffs, but the whole "who came forward to be interviewed" part puts a huge asterisk on the whole deal. There actually was a couple that observed Hancock in Shannons that night. They were interviewed by the STL media the day after the accident and they said he was visibly drunk. However, it makes no difference whether anyone thought he was visibly drunk. Missouri does not even permit such a suit if the drinker is 21 or older. The only exception is if if the liquor consumption is "involuntary" and that is what the suit is claiming. I still think that is a very weak argument.
