  1. Dear god the Cubs pen era prior to today was 4.46. The Rockies pen ERA was 6.00. How is that even possible?
  2. Is this pen starting to reach historic levels of awful yet?
  3. Unless they score like 3 more runs, we all know how this is going to play out.
  4. It's really odd how early he pulls his starters, not necessarily tonight, yet he'll leave his relievers in there to just get destroyed.
  5. PCA in an 0-2 hole again. I've never seen anything like this.
  6. 2 on and no outs. How will they botch this?
  7. Well this has been a ****** last few minutes
  8. I swear to God PCA starts every at bat in an 0-2 or 1-2 hole
  9. Things I did not realize until today. Busch's 1.5 fWAR accounts for about 1/4 of the entire team's position player fWAR.
  10. It might improve a bit but remember, their LD% is down and FB% is up. Line drives carry the highest babip and fly balls carry the lowest. So naturally their expected babip will be lower than 2023.
  11. Ballesteros is definitely a potential super star bat. He's 20 years old and had the 3rd highest OPS(.867) in the AA Southern League good for a 155 wRC+. The people in front of him were a guy who is going to be 24 before the season ends and mega prospect Carson Williams.
  12. Without a doubt. It's a perfect storm of things. A line up with, at best average power, add on top of that a dead ball and it exacerbates the issue even further. The reality is, I suspect it's less that the Cubs have been really unlucky and more that the Cubs have picked the absolute worst hitting philosophy given their roster talent and current MLB offensive conditions.
  13. They actually go to the opposite field quite a bit. They have the second highest Oppo% in the league. The issue is that they're doing it in the air and there's only a few guys on this roster who have the kind of pop to consistently do damage to the opposite field, such as Busch. Guys like Nico, Tauchmann, Dansby, etc. aren't going to have consistent success doing this. Firing line drives or even grounders sure, but they don't the kind of pop necessary to go yard consistently to the opposite field.
  14. This tells me exactly what I thought. It's a team hitting philosophy and not so much a player issue. They're playing away from the majority of the lineups strengths.
  15. Tom is busy being in hiding now. He's skipped what, the last 2 Cub conventions now? He doesn't do the going out to the bleachers gimmick anymore either.
  16. I noticed this last night while looking at the batted ball data. The Cubs are the 3rd worst in the league at hitting line drives at 18.4%. They hit a ton of flyballs 40.1% which is the 5th most in the league, but their HR/FB% is 9.7 which is 20th in the league. It's almost like they're playing into a weakness. Then you have quality of contact 29.6 Hard% (20th) 53.5 MED% (10th) 16.9 SOFT% (10th) Without digger deeper, it's almost like they went too far into launch angle for a team without tons of power and we're seeing the results. While last year they had a higher ld% and lower fb%.
  17. There's always Carter Hawkins, who is technically the GM even though we all Know everything is run by Jed.
  18. The problem is that he's very good at one aspect of the job and very bad at the other. He's in the upper 25% of GMs, maybe even higher, as far as building a farm goes. He's pretty easily in the bottom 25% for FA. I honestly wonder if he wouldn't get better results if he was working with a team with far more limited financial resources. Because he has the financial ability to do so, it's like he feels compelled to give guys 2 year deals who may not even deserve a 1 year deal. All the while, he's too scared to use those same financial resources to dip into the elite end of the talent pool. Instead he uses those resources to fill the roster with mediocrity.
  19. I wont lie, I've thought about what an Orioles trade would look like, especially now that they're lost Kyle Bradish for 2024 and most of 2025. You wouldn't even have to land Holliday and you could still get an absolute stacked package. Being able to pick 2 out of 3 from Basallo, Mayo, Kjerstad with a couple other lesser pieces would be very significant. I'd very much rather not go that direction but with 2024 looking like a throw away season and 2025 looking very questionable as to how competitive the Cubs will be, I wouldn't entirely rule it out.
  20. As was mentioned before, even if Jed were fired today, could the next person make the 2025 team competitive given the contract situation Jed already has this team in? I genuinely don't think so. There's too many holes and not enough money to fill them all. Any significant improvements would have to come via trade. Even with all of Smyly, Hendricks, Gomes, Mancini, Barnhart and potentially Bellinger, coming off the books there's not enough to grab someone like Soto and fill all the necessary holes.
