  1. He hired Brian Kelly and Mick Cronin at Cincy, yes? And Mick Cronin had a champagne party with his staff when he left. Says all you need to know.
  2. Groce is less accomplished than Weber was when he took the job. This is the second major hire, and the second major failure by Thomas. Groce wasn't even on Illinois' list of candidates before this Sweet Sixteen run. So, in effect, we're hiring a guy based upon two lucky weeks of basketball to bring our program back from the dead. This is beyond pathetic. We fired Bruce Weber, for a less accomplished more expensive version of Bruce Weber. MAC Thomas needs to go, he's been nothing but an axe man, he's promised results and failed to deliver. Football is one forgiveable, but doing the same in basketball is unacceptable. This all goes back to publicly trashing your coach, failing to communicate with your coach, and running your athletic departments in a scorched earth fashion. He's an awful boss, and no one wants to work with him. Hence, we get stuck with Tim Beckman and John Groce. Get excited Illinois fans, we're about to plunge to Lickliter Iowa levels. Edit: I'd rather have Collins or Theus at this point over Groce just for the record.
  3. Groce wasn't even on our list of candidates when Weber was fired. That is how horribly Thomas has failed for a second time. This is the best job open in all of college basketball and we ended up with John [expletive] Groce. Thomas promised a home run, and he delivered a strike out.
  4. No I wanted him to fire Weber, and replace him with someone better. Instead we're going to get another Weber. MAC Thomas needs to go.
  5. [expletive] Mike Thomas. I hope you're all happy. We fired Bruce Weber to hire the coach of Ohio University. A guy that has finished 9th in the MAC two out of four years. This is abysmal.
  6. We don't need the CPL to be successful. They expect undivided loyalty from Illinois but [expletive] us at every turn. Focus on downstate, Peoria, the suburbs and the Catholic league, and outside of Simeon let the rest of the CPL rot in their own filth. Lol, we need the CPL. Or we need to start recruiting outside of the state. I agree go out of state, but I'm sick of the CPL getting all butt hurt over kids like Pat Beverly.

  8. Because POOPYPANTS is running it and he is incompetent. Edit: nevermind that second sentence
  9. Yeah but Stevens is 35 and has two things Bo will never get: Final Fours.
  10. Welp, there goes my afternoon. Oh great Brad wants a raise. We can give it to him. 8/21? Quite the chunk of change, but I'm not getting my hopes up that POOPYPANTS can deliver.
  11. Brad Stevens rumors are starting to percolate. I think he realizes he needs to move soon to cash in on the Final Fours.
  12. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/11450925-419/illinois-ad-mike-thomas-programmed-to-fail.html Required reading for SSR.
  13. I have some Nebraska fan friends who are really high on him as their next head coach. I think Illinois can and will do better though. I've heard he's a great recruiter. I'm to the point where I say go get anyone who can give you Jabari. Meh, Jabari is only going to be wherever he is for a year, I'm more concerned about a program builder. Although I'd love to have Parker, hiring someone in the hopes they can lure one player isn't the way to run a program. This hire will be successful if the replacement is more successful than Weber, that means we need a decade of 70% winning percentage, 3 Big Ten titles, and a Final Four. Hire a coach that can bring that type of success back, and not a coach that can bring you one player.

  15. I would be happy with Stevens, but I have two concerns: pace of play, and recruiting. I think now is a good time for him to leave Butler as his stock is still very high and Crean has resurrected Indiana.
  16. This hire is about returning the program to prominence. I think the only remaining coaches that can make that happen are Grant, Buzz or Stevens. I think there's no way Stevens comes to Illinois, and I think there's no way that Grant takes less than what we offered Shaka. I haven't read anything about Buzz's interest level, but he's got a very good thing going in Milwaukee. After that I'd look at Groce but he wouldn't excite me too much.
  17. WOOHOOOOO TIME FOR LEONARD HAMILTON OR STAN HEATH OR ANOTHER NON DESCRIPT COACH
  18. It isn't about the offers it is about him
  19. if it's a pc at vcu, then it's over. he's staying. Yep that's the feeling get too. I can't believe he turned our job down. This is all on Mike Thomas.
  20. Shaka is going on CBS tomorrow, which means we should know very soon. I'm not optimistic.
  21. That's going to be hard to turn down. What's the hold up then? He's an idiot if he turns this down. Maybe he doesn't want to work under a tyrant?
  22. There's absolutely no reason an AD should go on the radio and take calls from fans about a coach's job security. That is incredibly unprofessional, especially when your relationship with said coach is non-existent.
  23. To say he failed at the football hire when it's 3 months into the hire and not a single recruit has played nor a game has been played yet is a clear indication that your expectations are significantly out of whack. They offered good money to their #1 football candidate and he turned it down. If they offer good money to Smart and he turns it down, how is that the AD's fault again? It is his job to sell top tier candidates on Illinois. There's more to this than money. No one wants to work for a boss that hangs them out to dry for a month. He did Weber dirty, and the entire coaching community saw it. Like I said earlier any idiot could have fired Zook, Weber and Law, but it takes a good leader, manager, and recruiter to bring in talent.
  24. You know, Beckman is undefeated at Illinois. So is whoever the next basketball coach turns out to be. Beckman hasn't won a game at Illinois, and he's been here months already. He's had his chance. It's the fact that Thomas promised a great hire, pursued it, failed, and then we were left with Beckman. I still support the football program, and hope he does well. For all Guenther's faults, he still made good basketball hires, but I'm not going to sit around and support an AD that can't bring A list candidates to our supposed "top tier" basketball job. The A list candidate is Shaka, he's made the pursuit known, its all over national outlets, and now he needs to deliver.
  25. We've invested so much in getting Shaka that if we don't it is a failure. Even ESPN is hot on the rumor. If we don't get Shaka its like getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar. Thomas has already devalued the job by waiving Weber around as a lame duck for well over a month. We were promised better in football and we got Zook 2.0, a guy that was like fifth on our list. If he can't deliver a guy he had a working relationship with, and can outspend, then I'm done with him.
