  1. i'll take "whoever is playing the cardinals" Hopefully no one.
  2. I completely agree with you that there will likely be a lot of votes because he's young and on a 1st place team and also has the stigma of a superstar already attached to him, but just because they may vote for him for misguided reasons doesn't make Harper the wrong decision in this scenario. If he wins the ROTY it's very easily justified and can't be chalked up to the popularity contest reason. He's been very good this year. That being said you're right, people will vote for him for the wrong reasons... but he's conveniently one of the two right choices so if he wins it won't be a travesty against the voting system. Now if Harper wins a gold glove....
  3. The only other rookie who can give Harper a run for his money is Wade Miley. Harper bWAR: 4.0 Harper fWAR: 4.0 Miley bWAR: 3.8 Miley fWAR: 4.3 Harper is the best positional player rookie in the national league and it's not even THAT close (Todd Frazier 2.7 fWAR is 2nd). If Harper is going ot get it it's not because he's 19 and on the best team in the majors, it's because he legitimately deserves it.
  4. Back on August 30th...
  5. I'll give Molina credit, that was one of the most perfect throws I've ever seen
  6. Okay last link I'm stealing from Reddit, but this is worth watching...
  7. Also, this is pretty cool: http://deadspin.com/5943088/what-if-baseballs-foul-lines-ran-on-forever
  8. Josh Beckett hustling... http://graphicbaseball.com/gifs/Beckett9_4.gif Video: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/carlos-beltran-throws-josh-beckett-first-field-video-125914863--mlb.html
  9. well the red sox, fenway park and 80% of NESN were bought for $700m in 2002, which is looking like a pretty nice bargain since the dodgers just went for over $2 billion. I was referring to how many Liverpool fans consider that they overpaid for under performing talent. If they were to sell the Red Sox they'd make a huge return on their investment, obviously.
  10. He also embraced sabermetrics to improve his game http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7602264/oakland-brandon-mccarthy-writing-moneyball-next-chapter-reinventing-analytics-espn-magazine I like Brandon McCarthy a lot.
  11. http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2012/09/13/boston-red-sox-could-be-on-block/ Sounds like he can't do well at either sport... this sounds eerily familiar
  12. The Brewers gave Chipper Jones a grill and a year's supply of sausages... https://twitter.com/fswisconsin/status/246037487586263040/photo/1
  13. I find myself really rooting for them to make it. I'd like to see them and the Braves get the wild card spots.
  14. I completely agree with this philosophy, personally, though I believe when it was last brought up Tim mentioned there had been research done to suggest that an innings count can be just as detrimental than pitch count, regardless of how many pitches are being thrown each time out. I don't know, I approve of shutting him down and preserving their star pitcher, especially when you have a rotation behind him talented enough to compete in the playoffs without him... but I've always thought that innings were less important so long as the pitch count stays down, personally.
  15. Someone at Rotoworld is upset with their sleeper pick this year
  16. Happened to Ted Williams. Twice. Touché, but didn't the media dislike Williams a lot back then which led to him losing the MVP (OMC would know more about that)? Plus it seems like the triple crown has become one of the most hallowed achievements in baseball over the past couple of eras since it hasn't happened since 1967. I just find it crazy that if he were to win the first triple crown in 45 years, it would come in a season where he loses the MVP award to a rookie. I don't know that's just crazy to me, but it would be justified, Trout is the clear cut most valuable player in the league.
  17. So Mike Trout obviously has been the most valuable player in the AL, pretty easily... but Miguel Cabrera has a legitimate chance at winning the triple crown. He's tied for 1st in AVG and RBI, and he's 4 homers shy of Hamilton's 39. I personally don't think he'll catch up in the HR race, but for arguments sake let's say Miguel Cabrera actually DID win the Triple Crown and Mike Trout continues to put up gaudy numbers and doesn't slow down at all... Would it be insane to think that a triple crown winner wouldn't win MVP honors?
  18. I kinda picture McCarthy as one of the 2nd tier options along with guys like Sanchez and Jackson. McCarthy has been pretty recognizably above average since last season. I think he's going to be 3-4 year contract type guy, personally given his age and performance over the last couple years. Who knows. I just kinda picture them going after 1-2 year types to tread water while our younger players develop before splurging in FA. McCarthy doesn't strike me as that type of guy, personally. I think teams will see him as a #2 for the next few years
  19. Admittedly I chose not to watch it so I didn't see how bad it was. I hate seeing stuff like that. That being said if the injury doesn't hamper his ability on the mound, I would very much like to see the Cubs go after McCarthy this offseason, though it doesn't sound like he's the type of FA they're gonna target, sadly.
  20. I don't think they knew the severity of it until very recently today. The last thing I heard about it was after he was hit the reports were he was taken for precautionary measures and that he was conscious and coherent. I just read a few minutes about about his surgery... Definitely frightening
  21. Jim Caple poses the question "If you could go back in time and watch any game in person what game would it be?" First thing that popped in my head was Kerry Wood's 20K game, which was one of R.A. Dickey's choices. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8318858/the-one-baseball-game-most-go-back-time-see
  22. Shelby Miller got called up today
  23. Fair enough False. He was nowhere near one of the 10 best pitchers in the AL his first year. Nor was he in his 2nd year. Or his 3rd. He was the 10th best pitcher by fWAR in his 4th full season (his 5th year as a Royal). He was 8th best pitcher by fWAR in his final year as a Royal. So he was one of the 10 best pitchers in the AL for the final 3 of his 7 total years as a Royal. Not sure what the point is you're trying to make with that statement. See #2. His insane 2009 (9.3 fWAR) allowed him to be listed as the most valuable pitcher between 2008-2010 in the AL (the only time frame when he was considered a Top 10 pitcher in the league). He was 4th most valuable in both AL and NL, behind Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Tim Lincecum. If you want to extend that all the way to his rookie year, he was the 8th most valuable pitcher during his AL stint from 2004-2010. He was out fWAR'd in the AL by C.C Sabathia, Roy Halladay, John Lackey, Mark Beuhrle, Johan Santana, and Felix Hernandez. If you extend that to both NL and AL, he was 13th most valuable in that time frame. Other pitchers who get put in front of him include Javier Vasquez, Roy Oswalt, Dan Haren, Brandon Webb, and Josh Beckett. No, they really weren't.
