  1. This is the situation I envision and playing it out in my head, to me, it makes more sense to trade him. I'd have more faith in the FO targeting talent that can develop into successful big league arms than Samardzija improving over what he already is. Paying Samardzija = keeping the rotation the way it is, and the rotation right now isn't acceptable from a long term perspective, IMO. I'd rather use the Samardzija money for someone else. Cubs could also be daft and trade one of the big bats for an impact pitcher, too. If they move Samardzija for an arm(s), and don't explore the FA market for pitching next offseason, I could see Soler being moved in a package for an impact pitcher (provided he doesn't fall of a cliff).
  2. So take one of the few sure things on our roster (a reliable starting pitcher) and turn him into another risk and convince the top available free agent to sign with a 65 win team for 80% of what everyone else is offering So how do you two propose we improve our rotation? It's a difficult question, are we going to continue forward carrying an 80M payroll, or are we going to act like a real team? If we're acting like a real team, than my first way to improve our rotation would be to not trade away the best pitcher in it. Hypothetically, say Poor Tom Ricketts bumped up payroll to a $95 million threshold. You've got $15 million extra in wiggle room to play with.

  4. Trade Samardzija for, at least, one top pitching prospect (two if you can get it) that's in AA/AAA this year and will be primed for MLB by spring next season. Supplement it with a FA pitcher next offseason, of which there are some nice ones available (Masterson and Scherzer come to mind). At some point one or two of Vogelbach, Olt, or Alcantara have to go (or Castro). That can be used for more pitching. It's not inconceivable. Likely? Eh, maybe. But it's possible.

  6. Soooooo... he was initially right? He was never a PTBNL. Evan Grant (Rangers reporter) said the Cubs had him in the original deal until the Rangers didn't like Garza's medicals at the last moment. When that happened, Odor was replaced by Grimm and they added PTBNL's to help compensate. Still I assumed it's been pretty clear from the get go that the stuff he posts is merely just rumors he's heard through the grapevine, and he's been pretty vocal about them being just rumors. If people take them as fact, that's not really his problem.
  7. I like Parks and all that, but I keep harking back to when Kyle called him out for catching up in the offseason and he was all like "We have scouts that provide us with information throughout the year waaaaahhhhhh Lindor is better than Baez" And now he's saying there's a case to be made that he's the best prospect in baseball. Okay.
  8. It already did. It lasted a couple minutes. Damnit, you're right. Oh well, life goes on.
  9. Or not. Time's gonna tell on that one.
  10. PJ Armstrong is gonna catch on, you'll see. And when he's announced at Wrigley over the speakers system they'll say "Puh puh puh peeejaaaaaaaaaaaaay Arrrrrrrrrmmmstrooooooooong"
  11. I simply can't take anything seriously when it's formatted like that.
  12. I voted for PJ Armstrong for the mere fact that he has a more realistic future in this organization in a role he's capable of filling and Vogelbach does not. Like someone said in another thread, Vogelbach is merely currency at this point. If we had the DH, I'd probably rank him 5th.
  13. I've been thinking an opt out clause is going to be necessary for the Cubs to land him, and might also be the team's ace in the hole in making him signing a reality. I'm hoping after the A-Rod situation the Yankees aren't interested in opt out clauses anymore.
  14. I know he was brought up earlier in the offseason, but the Nats are apparently looking to trade Storen. Before it was rumored they were looking to move him or Clippard but I don't think it was more than just speculation. Not sure what they'd ask for, but he'd be a great add for the bullpen
  15. https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tt7HjIernphaSrv4wMWdUYg&output=html Even after arbitration raises, a potential Samardzija extension, and a possible $25 million or so a year deal for Tanaka, the Cubs are still looking like a $90-$110 million a year team for the next few years. If they get a massive TV deal that gives them a [expletive] load of money to play around with on top of that, it makes the risk of signing Tanaka that much less of a bother. And during this time when they have millions more to spend, they'll have guys like Baez, Bryant, Almora, Soler, Alcantara, and Edwards on the team for LEAGUE MINIMUM. I honestly don't care how much they spend on Tanaka. I just want him in a Cubs uniform
  16. Vitters>Olt I sometimes wonder whether or not Olt's defense would be more valuable than Josh Vitters' entire repertoire.
  17. If we sign him to that contract he'll have more money that @poortomricketts. (Getting them in before the tv deal) You should probably make @richtomricketts as a contingency if the TV deal goes through and start having twitter wars with @poortomricketts.
  18. I want it. I want it hard. Long term is the only term.
  19. Sure, but if you got a billion dollar TV deal on the horizon why not?
