  1. I know it's nine hours to Geneva (done that trip twice), so I think it would be about thirteen hours to Milan, and about eighteen to Rome, I guess.
  2. After reporting on the plans here, it has now become official: in a joint-venture with MLB the Italian Baseball League is turning professional in 2009 or 2010 in an eight team setup. MLB is apparently also going to fund part of the building costs of a new stadium in Rome with the specific right to shedule MLB games in Rome for the next five years. For the full report (in Italian): La FIBS guiderà la professionalizzazione delle società
  3. In 2007? I doubt it. If any of those play for the Cubs in the upcoming season, it means a lot of guys will be on the DL again.
  4. I could live with the Cubs being forced to pay out that bonus. :smokin:
  5. As in previous years, the problem will not be the picking, but the sticking.
  6. I know I shouldn't ask this, but what happens in the other 1% of the time?
  7. Ouch. Bad day at the office.
  8. Haven't seen this posted anywhere else, and this seems the appropriate place to talk about it: Apparently, the Italian league are having talks with MLB about setting up a fully professional league in Italy by 2009. The whole thing seems to be rather preliminary at the moment (i.e. a business plan is being made), but the idea of having a pro-ball outpost in Europe sure sounds intriguing. For those who want to have a go, you can about it on the Italian league's website: Fraccari annuncia il professionismo per il 2009 With my limited understanding of Italian, it seems that there's also talk of the construction of a 'MLB worthy' stadium in Rome (whatever that may mean), and the Italian league's academy in Tirrenia being transformed in to a permanent facility of the MLB academy next year.
  9. Or one of the posters here. :joker: So, fess up, which one of you is Dempster?
  10. I don't think that's a fair comment. Outside of Tim, most people reacted with a "Dontrelle Who?" IIRC Willis was the lowest level prospect of the three involved in that deal, and still a very long way from the majors at the time.
  11. He seems to play 2b An extremely young hitting prospect at 2b MLBInternational deems worthy of an invite - interesting...
  12. He's a positional prospect. From what I've read, he was indeed invited for his hitting. I'll see what I can dig up on him later. Meanwhile, here's a pic. http://www.rotterdamunicorns.nl/images_deelnemers_2006/jan_baldee.jpg
  13. Maestri seems to be adapting quite well to playing Pro ball in the US. :D
  14. So the European Baseball Academy starts today. Some interesting choices in whom was invited; no less than 16 dutchmen got invites (two declined, one of them because he has already signed with the Mariners). The most remarkable choice is probably Jan Baldee, a 15 yr old player from the Rotterdam Unicorns (a sports HS) youth squad (which makes him too young to play in the Dutch league)
  15. I watched Cuba lose to the Netherlands in last sunday's final of the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament. Quite frankly, I wasn't too impressed with either team.
  16. No way he gets called up. Now we know why Hendry traded for Izturis. :hammer:
  17. I'll be checking it out during the next day game. Is there a feed for the away game at the Lookouts on 7/26 or do I have to wait for the 7/30 home game against the Smokies?
  18. And for the same curious bunch, his regular season stats from 2005 playing for T&A San Marino in the Italian Campionato A1: W L SA IP BF H 2B 3B HR K BB IBB HP ER ERA O.AVE WP BK BB/9IP K/9IP 3 1 1 60.2 255 51 7 3 1 41 26 3 10 20 2.97 .237 0 0 3.89 6.13
  19. Actually, Premiership starts on 08/19. Even in England, that is still summer. 8)
  20. Finally someone from inside the clubhouse confirms what a lot of people have been thinking. Not that it'll make any difference
  21. Wow. That was a pick out of the blue. Wilken should deserve the benefit of the doubt, but this sure is testing things out of the starting blocks.
  22. Wow, USSoccer is finally converted to office policy. 8) Just for a fortnight.. :D  So you expect your guys to be eliminated in the second round?
  23. Wow, USSoccer is finally converted to office policy. 8)
  24. That might well be the best long term strategy, IMHO.
  25. Delighted to hear that. Thanks for passing the information, DJAXX.
