  1.   Time sure speeds up as you get older, Tim.
  2. Cool. I've seen this guy on TV playing for the Netherlands. The Dutch have high hopes for him in the upcoming WBC (he's been playing for their national team since 2003). Side note: in the Netherlands, his first name is usually spelled Shurendell Here's a picture of him: http://www.honkbalsite.com/nederlandsteam/shurendell_de_caster.jpg
  3. Good to hear the Cubans are in. No way they'll win this, but their participation shows sportsmanship IMHO. The eligibility issue is getting a bit comical. When reading up on who's likely to play for the Netherlands, some weird names came up. Mark Mulder? What's his connection to that country? Unless someone at MLB simply happened to notice he was born in South Holland, but forgot the (IL) bit.
  4. IIRC that experiment was abandoned.
  5. Because he's about the same size as Darren Baker?
  6. A lineup without just-in-case insurance vets? That'll be the day. Still, I'd like to see it. The Cubs showing that much confidence in home-grown talent (Fontenot being the exception).
  7. One can always count on politicians to ruin the fun.
  8. Ditto. Ah, the memories...
  9.      Finally, an offseason move I'd been anticipating.
  10. <------------- my location disqualifies me from voting in this poll.
  11. Mor typoes wuld add mor werds tu thu leest. :D    La plus perdue de toutes les journées est celle où l'on n'a pas ri. (Nicolas de Chamfort) - (a day without laughter is a lost day)
  12. My offer to start posting in Dutch and French is still valid if you want to boost those numbers, Tim. :jocolor:
  13. It was indeed a move for the sole purpose of clearing room. But hopefully not for Macias. What's his contractual situation anyway?
  14. Of course they do: Swiss baseball federation 8)
  15. If such a policy is ever applied in soccer, the world cup can safely be limited to an eight team tournament. And no, the US would not be taking part.
  16. Sweet, I've got a shot! I like Pizza. That should qualify you for a spot on the bench. :jocolor:
  17. It would seem they are making a set of prupose-built rules, and trying to pass on the criticism. From the Sportsline article: Yeah right. From the IBAF rules: That is about as clear as it can get: if you don't hold citizenship, you can't play for a country. From the content of the article, it would seem like they are finding inspiration in the eligibility rules used in rugby. From the IRFB rules: Which is about as broad as you can reasonably get, unless you are willing to consider "likes spaghetti" as sufficient condition to play for Italy.
  18. I agree that this could work, but only if Baker leaves, which isn't going to happen.
  19. As far as I'm concerned, Dusty can freely choose his nails and timber. Hendry should be choosing who should wear Cubbie blue next year.
  20. ESPN has a crystal ball and already knows the opening day lineups for all teams. :pig:
  21. In that case I hope they get to use bumper-lanes. :joker: (Couldn't resist - I took ten kids bowling yesterday :D )
  22. From the MLB.com website: February 16, 2006 Voluntary reporting date for pitchers, catchers and injured players. February 21, 2006 Voluntary reporting date for other players. February 28, 2006 Mandatory reporting date.
  23. So far so good as far as I'm concerned. Picking up Walker should have been a no-brainer all along, and Williamson is the type of low risk, high reward situation that Hendry seems to love. Giving Dempster a contract was predictable, and I agree the Rusch situation is ... debatable.
  24. That's a good read. Thanks, Quakers. Matt has a sound approach to his job.
  25. Still no confirmation from Cuba: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/news/051013intupdate.html Anybody ready on the bench to step in just in case?
