churches play music like that? My wife's church opens each service with about 20 minutes of live music (a band playing contemporary Christian music) followed by a 40 minute talk by the pastor. No hymns, no random bible readings, no Lords Prayer

I concur. I also thought most christian music tried to be a little less on the nose than that. It was basically a sunday school story sung. The worst thing about Modern Christian music is how lazy the songwriting is.
