  1. Wow, my "Big 10 goes undefeated except PSU" prediction is in shambles. NU loses, Illini lose, Indiana getting killed, Minnesota tied at Cal....yipes.
  2. Yes, I just ranted about Charlie's sportsmanship in the "College Games 9/9" thread. I thought it was classless and a blatant attempt to run up the score (and Quinn's numbers). Congrats buddy, you've impressed the hell out of the pollsters and Heisman comittee. Keep up the good work (jerk)
  3. Alright, maybe I'm a tad pissed because Penn State just got their teeth kicked in, but.... I lost some respect for Charlie Weis today. I haven't seen more blatant "running up the score" play calling in the second half in years. Fake punt? Going for it on 4th down (more than once)? Continuing to call pass plays with Quinn? C'mon. I know, it's not his fault that the poll system seemingly rewards teams for blowouts (and, in his case this past week, penalizes them for close games), but it seemed in poor taste to me. Am I crazy for seeing it this way? Did anyone else find the fakes and 4th down attempts to be unsportsmanlike?
  4. PSU making way too many mistakes on the road today. This could be a blow out by game's end. The secondary is getting shredded. Tony Hunt is having a helluva game for the Lions, but to no great effect so far.
  5. I am a Penn St. fan (obviously) and didn't go there. But I moved to State College in 1986, and my first full season of watching college football was Penn State's National Championship season. Though I moved to Chicago to go to school, I never stopped rooting for the Nittany Lions. Plus, I went to DePaul for undergrad, and since we had no football team....well, the allegiance to PSU only grew. Yes, I went to Northwestern as a grad student, but it's just not the same as being an undergrad somewhere. You aren't part of campus life, you don't really go to sporting events, etc. (you don't have time). I did see Penn State play Northwestern in Evanston, however, which was great fun. So yeah, saying you are somehow less of a fan or a "fake" fan of a college team when you didn't go there is absurd. The only time it annoys me is when someone claims allegiance to the schools that happen to be good that year. "Me, I love the Yankees, Duke Blue Devils, Notre Dame and Patriots. You?"
  6. I guess my "bold" prediction is really just a stupid one
  7. Dunno where these stats came from, but ND beat Michigan in their 2004 home opener, so actually they just lost their last one. file your grievances with the Centre Daily Times, the fine, fine newspaper of central PA.
  8. While we're throwing out stats about these two teams, some interesting ones from today's CDT: - The all-time series between ND and PSU is knotted at 8-8-1 - Penn State is 8-5 against ND under Paterno - Today marks the 5th straight game in the series in which both teams are ranked in the top 25 - Notre Dame is 93-18-5 in home openers, but has lost its last two - Penn State is 44-10 in non-conference games since joining the Big 10 in 1993 - Penn State hasn't defeated a top-10 team on teh road since bating #8 Miami in 1999
  9. Did Rutgers suspend half their team? I said it was bold, not practical
  10. Bold prediction: Everyone in the Big 10 will be 2-0 Sunday...........................except Penn State
  11. a sidenote: We're talking big business here (Trib), so cutting $30 million from payrollin 2007 does not in any way equal adding $30 million in 2008. That $30 million would go into the stockholder's pockets and Christmas bonuses for all the upper management.
  12. K-E-Y ! M-O-U-S-E !
  13. Late April/Early May of 1993. Don't remember who pitched, only that the Reds scored 1 in the top of the 1st, then no scoring until the Cubs scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th. It was also high 60's and sunny, so we wore shorts and light jackets, but sat in the shade the whole time and froze.
  14. it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the national media ended up handing the MVP to a Met
  15. Won't matter this year. Most of the tickets have been sold already. Trib has their cash and they could care less. Paid attendance was a pathetic 27,105 today. But if actual attendance was significantly lower, they're missing out on plenty of money thanks to lost concession and merchandise sales. ding ding ding. I would say that most fans spend almost as much (if not more) on food and merchandise in a given game than they do on their ticket. Heck, I went to 8 minor league games this year (at $9 per ticket) and probably spent another $15+ at each game for other stuff.
  16. I agree with Outshined. They should pull a "Knicks" and say "okay idiot, you made this mess, you go down there everyday and make it work or you're out". Methinks that if Mark Cuban owned the team, everyone from MacPhail down would be in the unemployment line
  17. They will never ever get rid of preseason polls, as the networks want little numbers next to the teams when they advertise their games
  18. yep, and all those running and passing plays were cutting into valuable truck and beer advertisement time
  19. I really, Really, REALLY want to agree with you, but somehow I think O$U gets its revenge.
  20. are we talking about the media poll or coach's poll here? Why would the coaches give a fig about making a 1 vs. 2 matchup this week?
  21. how are ND and Auburn both #4?
  22. what time do the new polls come out today?
  23. Really, why not? because they are Notre Dame and they won, so no voter is going to drop them Unfortunately you are wrong. There is a precedent for ND dropping in the polls after they win. I know it's possible. PSU lost a chance at the NC in 1994 because they dropped from #1 to #2 after beating Indiana (and the 3rd string defense allowed a few late scores)
  24. yes, LB Tim Shaw lined up as a pass rusher, so it was a sort of 3.5-3.5 defense
