I am a Penn St. fan (obviously) and didn't go there. But I moved to State College in 1986, and my first full season of watching college football was Penn State's National Championship season. Though I moved to Chicago to go to school, I never stopped rooting for the Nittany Lions. Plus, I went to DePaul for undergrad, and since we had no football team....well, the allegiance to PSU only grew. Yes, I went to Northwestern as a grad student, but it's just not the same as being an undergrad somewhere. You aren't part of campus life, you don't really go to sporting events, etc. (you don't have time). I did see Penn State play Northwestern in Evanston, however, which was great fun. So yeah, saying you are somehow less of a fan or a "fake" fan of a college team when you didn't go there is absurd. The only time it annoys me is when someone claims allegiance to the schools that happen to be good that year. "Me, I love the Yankees, Duke Blue Devils, Notre Dame and Patriots. You?"
