i agree w/ this, except that soriano HAS shown changes in production when he's moved up and down the order. I would normally say bat him 5th, but his production is vastly superior from the leadoff spot than it is from other places with roughly a season's worth of PAs. Correlation does not equal causation. If there's a reason or number of reasons why Soriano had success hitting first, then by all means, he should hit first. I'm just not sure what those reasons would be. it's entirely mental. He sees himself as a leadoff guy, he likes being a leadoff guy, and he seemingly doesn't try as hard when he's dropped in the order.

I went to a game last year in the bleachers towards the end of the season (August 2 maybe?) and sat through some of the hardest rain I have ever seen. I literally could not see the grandstand. I got absolutely soaked, wasted a bunch of money on beer, lost a full pack of cigarettes to wetness and didn't even get to see a game. Also soaking wet does not make for a fun trip home. I was at that game as well, and it was 8/2. I gladly stood out in the bleachers and soaked in every bit of that rain. Ironically, I had as much fun at that non-game as I had at the game two days earlier when Arizona killed us. We should have hung out! I definitely sat through it like any man would do. And it was really fun in spite of the downpour. Me and my friends were flirting/goofing around with a girl whose pants were so soaked that well.... not much was left to the imagination. rain in august isn't bad. I shivered through a few hours of rain on April 27, 2002 where it was pouring and about 40 degrees. I was in the last row of the upper deck and was catching the wind through the fence. The game was eventually called. The good thing was that we got 4 Sammy Sosa Bobbleheads (one of which I've donated to the Predictions Prize Pool)

Was this a national game? I didn't notice. Teams postpone games on one day's notice all the time. I don't think that's an issue. This was a WGN game. The issue isn't the postponement but the rescheduling. The Cubs have hundreds of affiliate stations that carry their broadcasts so allowing for the reshuffling of programming is important. Think about it, stations set their programming schedules weeks in advance (including guest interviews) it's not just a matter of the Cubs are playing so they carry the game... An ancillary benefit is this allows the Cubs to add a Summer night game to the schedule. This is the first season that they have been allowed up to 30 night games. I believe that the addition of this game and the option to change two future Sunday night games brings the total to 29. I do know they gave up a night game to add a second night for the Police concert. Well what are they going to show now today with the Cubs game canceled on such short notice? WGN Superstation will just show their usual Becker marathon

Personally, I'd be furious that the Cubs left a starter in all year long that couldn't provide better numbers than that. I don't care if they have to promote Veal or Gallagher to make it happen. 5.40 ERA/1.60 WHIP is for AAA, not the major leagues. I'd be livid that the pitcher with the 5.40 ERA/1.60 WHIP wasn't DFA'd. Those are pathetic numbers regardless of the run support and "keeping his team in games" nonsense that would be spewed. you must have been LIVID that the Cubs didn't DFA Guzman last year (or Rich Hill early in the season)

Do you really think this for the long term betterment of theteam how long term are you talking? The Cubs are (supposedly) built to win now, so no, I don't want a struggling-yet-promising hitter in the lineup over an aged-yet-producing veteran if it costs an already struggling offense runs We are not built to win this year. If we were in the American league we would be lucky to be a .500 team. This is the same old pie in the sky chasing mediocrity crap that the Cubs have done for years. Bringing in past prime players to block young talented players time is what mediocre teams do. This is exactly the same kind of stuff that we hated about Dusty. Also I wouldnt go as far as saying hitting .250 in 4 games in struggling. If we are going to use that mentality than Barrett needs to be benched also. Murton earned his time last year. A .800 ops in his first almost regular season. Only the stupid Cubs would even bring in a player to take time away from a young player who had that kind of first season. I dont see them taking time away from Jock. Why not? Whats the difference between him and Murton. AGE. In my opinion it is worth it for the awesome tailgating. I went to several games last year without tickets and had an absolute blast. The DeVry deal is the epitome of convenient, but you can't do it for weekday games, so that kind of sucks. Sometimes when I don't want to hang around and bar hop after games I will just drive and park in one of the numerous lots in the neighborhood, and if you are with a few people the price isn't really that bad. Also I have parked in Oak Park on a side street near the green line (not sure about the legality of that, but I have never been ticketed) taken the train downtown, hopped on either the brown of the red and that worked out rather well. The bottom line is that getting to the park isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, but there are plenty of options. Unbelievable. I lived in Oak Park for two years (with legal parkingpasses) and still got tickets all the time. If I knew how many hours I spent at the Oak Park parking office refuting tickets....

No they don't but without the errors, one could make a case that his ERA could have been lowered just by virtue of pitching deeper in the game. The errors extended the innings and raised his pitch count which contributed to Marquis only pitching 5 innings. That's what he's saying. Bah..he could have pitched longer and given up 5 more runs too. The what-if game is a dangerous game. Lets go on what he actually did. well, what he actually did was keep the team in the game. I agree! He did! He did keep his team in the game. So if the offense scored 7 runs and he allowed 10, did he do a good job of 'keeping his team in the game'? that's different and you know it It's the same type of logic though. Kevin Millwood won the AL ERA title in 2005 with a 2.86 ERA but he was only 9-11 for the Indians....does that mean he did a poor job that year? No he did a fantastic job that year. Meanwhile, Randy Johnson goes 17-11 with a 5.00 ERA last year. Did he do something special that allowed him to "keep his team in the game"? Is it because the Yankees have a great offense that he's allowed to throw up a meatball every once in awhile? and I would argue that Millwood had the better year. What I'm saying though is that in the 10-7 scenario you proposed, no one would say anyone was keeping the team in the game. It's a faulty argument, and one that doesn't disprove the fact that Marquis held the Astros down (after making his own mess) whle the Cubs did nothing at all to get back in teh game
