  1. Cubs non-tendered LHP Neal Cotts. Not a surprise. Cotts, who turns 30 in March, underwent Tommy John surgery in July and is not expected to be ready until the middle of next season. The Cubs are reportedly open to offering him a minor league deal. Cotts posted a 7.36 ERA and 2.09 WHIP in 19 appearances in '09 and has a 4.63 ERA in parts of seven major league seasons.
  2. Talor Battle with 19 points in the 1st half tonight, even after missing several minutes with a twisted ankle
  3. In the pre-renovation days of Soldier Field, the bathrooms were so lousy (and there were so few of them) that people pissed in the sinks
  4. The point is that the system rewards teams for living up to expectations, and penalizes them for playing better than expectations
  5. There are 5 undefeated teams this year, and the two who are getting to play for the NC are there because coaches and sports writers decided in August that they were the most likely to be good. End of story. Had Cincy, TCU or Boise State been a pre-season #1 or #2 team, they would be playing for the title instead of Texas. So go ahead and defend this system all you want, but it's completely and utterly broken
  6. couldn't you argue that Hendry's quick signing of Dempster set the bar for the rest of those contracts? Had Dempster been signed for, say, 4/40 instead of 4/52 (not saying he would have, but theoretically) would all the rest of those contracts also been lower?
  7. so, who ends up at Cincy?
  8. Dempster's deal wasn't way above market value though so I'm not sure what comparison you're trying to make there. If anything, it was maybe a little under market value. I remember it being the perception at the time, but I don't have a full list of the 2008 off season contracts to verify
  9. I fully expect Hendry to offer Cameron a multi-year deal that will end up being way higher than market value once we see what Bay/Holliday make (see: Ryan Dempster deal)
  10. or he wouldn't have committed to leaving until after being eliminated from the playoffs. It would just have delayed his departure
  11. It was fun to see the BJ's start hot, but they're playing terribly right now, and Chicago/Nashville are pulling away. They'll need to step it up to stay in contention for one of the bottom seeds in the West
  12. This still wouldn't keep current players from deciding to transfer/leave early or current recruits from de-committing during that time. I imagine that's a big part of what Kelly will be dealing with immediately. True, and this isn't simply an ND related issue; Cincinnati needs to get a new coach in to try to retain the Bearcat recruits who might now be bailing out with Kelly leaving. That said, a recruiting/hiring freeze would allow everything to play out before kids started having to make decisions. The rush to get high schoolers into spring/summer practice has trumped all.
  13. It's a product of the 12 month recruiting cycle that CFB has evolved into. A simple solution would be for the NCAA to implement a hiring/recruiting freeze from the end of the regular season to the end of the bowl season, but that would make too much sense.
  14. Wisconsin follows up their win over Duke by laying an egg against Wiscy GB. Oops
  15. NCAA is also exempt from anti-trust regulations, which is something the fed can dangle over their heads if they want things to change
  16. http://deus-ex-machinima.net/pics/citation_needed.jpg
  17. REPORT: Angels have offered Joe Saunders, Erick Aybar and Peter Bourjos for Roy Halladay
  18. On a more basic level, a pitcher's job is to not let hitters reach base. Grabow wasn't particularly good at that.
  19. They can't shoot or play defense, but other than that....
  20. Cashner has [expletive] all to do with Bradley, so stop talking about him
  21. Rotoworld says Cubs are among the teams interested in signing Joel Pineiro. Thoughts? He had a good WHIP last year and just over 60% the balls put into play against him were on the ground
  22. waiting to hear what happens with Bradley is like sitting in the dentist's waiting room waiting to get your tooth drilled
  23. 2008 - Guys who can catch the ball 2009 - Get more left-handed 2010 - Sign 28 relief pitchers?
  24. It's a shame to be wasting such a good season from Deng
  25. Having all the games on one day sucked, as you couldn't watch them all
