Are you serious? That's your argument? "Well, if you just throw out a 25+ HR year for only 5M, and add in the fact he *could* suck next year or the one after..." What makes you dislike Jones so much, just because everyone else here does and it's popular? Good job putting words in my mouth. Jones is not likely to perform at this same level over the next two years. This was a career year for him. He's never performed as well as he did this year. He has nowhere to go but down. It's not that he *could* suck next year, it's that his performance is *highly likely* to decline over the next two. It was a bad contract. I don't dislike Jacque. I'm rooting for him to do well, but I think the contract he was signed to was too long, and limits the teams options. That's not Jacque's fault, it's the Cubs fault. It's Hendry's fault. And I do dislike Hendry. Jones in 2002: .300/.341/.511/.852 27 HR 85 RBI Pretty much an identical season.
  2. Dombrowski??? He is with Detroit, and has been the past few years. Were you thinking of someone else?
  3. wow.... I agree. Great Post by JeffH. Summed up the complete essense of Failure in 7 words. Actually, I find that post to be embarrassing to this site. I'm with you. Thought about not even giving it attention and not responding. There isn't a need for that.

I was just thinking there was some room for hope in that regard. He has been with the organization for a long time, though, so hard to say if opinions have already been calcified. At the risk of being a contrarian, I think the Cubs have been excellent at times in player evaluation. They traded Choi, Bobby Hill, and Brendan Harris while acquiring DLee, Aram, and Murton. Unlike most of this board, the Cubs were on target about Jacque's abilities. The problem isn't scouting, it's not relying on stats as well as scouting. Finding a platoon partner for Jacque, batting high OBP guys #1 and #2, etc. The management team needs balance, not a complete overhaul. *sigh*...the problem with Jones, for the millionth time, wasn't that people thought he wouldn't perform well this season. It was that we didn't think he was obtained at a good price, and for a reasonable length of time. If he maintains this same level of play for 3 years, then maybe you'll have a point. Well, this day in age I think his production was just fine for only 5 M/year. But that's THIS YEAR! Forget this year. In the last year of his deal, will he perform well enough for his salary? That's the argument. Ok, I hear you, but you can only go by what he has done so far. Nobody know what he will do in year 3, its kind of pointless to argue that right now. You can only discuss what he has done so far, which was a pretty good year. Let's sign him to a 40 year $6 billion contract What, you don't know how he'll do, he hasn't done it yet. edit: oh, and yay, I guess. Huh? Only point i was making is that Jacque was just fine this year based on his salary. But instead of acknowledging that fact, most are quick to point out that he has two more years left on the deal. There is more factual evidence (at this point in time) to support this deal being a decent one as opposed to a bad one.
  5. Japanese imports make me nervous, especially pitchers. There have been more failures than success stories since this all started. Any team willing to commit that kind of money better be quite sure they know what they are getting.
  6. Total agreement. With that in mind, I don't think he would be worth what it would take to get him.

  9. Yes. Even in the horrible post AS numbers, he still had an 855 OPS. That's not horrible. Considering he still has the ability to post an OPS over 900 in a full season, he is worth acquiring. He's still only 26 years old. He hasn't entered his prime yet. Considering this team's two biggest needs are slugging and OBP and Dunn helps with both of those. But there is no concern at all for his 2nd half? That is more than just a minor slump, it is half a season. I just wouldn't give up the farm for him, he's not in the same class of superstars that you do that for. Just my opinion though.
  10. Well, he just took a job with TB. Maybe they can get Hunsicker and Dierker. Then sign Bagwell, trade for Billy Wagner, sign Vizcaino, and bring Nolan Ryan out of retirement. We could call them the Cubstros.
  11. Am I the only one of the opinion that Dusty would be just fine walking away form this team? I think the chances are pretty good that he won't be asked back, but at the same time I think that might be Dusty's choice as well.
  12. Everybody pumps up Speier, Why? I'm not anti-Speier, but what is it about him that others see?
  13. I think its obvious Hendry is safe, at least through 2007. I think Hendry knows that too. Will be interesting to see the moves he tries to make in order to save his job.
  14. If it took three pitchers to get Pierre, I don't even want to think what they would want for Cabrera. Prior, Hill, Pie and Cedeno? If that is all it would take I'd do it. I think it would take much more than that.
  15. Juan Pierre is your 2006 NL leader in Hits. Good job Juan.
  16. Dunn's season is over, fittingly with a strikeout. To kind of put a bow on this whole discussion, here are his final number's for the year. .234/.365/.490/.855 Final #'s for September: .157/.333/.265/.598 Post ASB numbers: .228/.362/.419/.781 Is he really worth giving up probably two top prospects for?
  17. Should get interesting pretty soon. I doubt Dusty is back, I also don't think he wants to be back. You will probably see a statement indicating both the Cubs and Dusty will pursue other options. His contract is up, he won't technically be fired. Let's not just get carried away and think this solves all the Cubs problems if it happens. It might be a step in the right direction, but there is a lot of other moves that need to be made.
  18. a season is a marathon, not a sprint, like i said. although the games appear to matter more in august and september, they really don't. don't let the "music of the spheres" fool you. although a pennant race may appear to be more of a race in september, it's just as much of a race in april. I agree with you, but it is obvious his lack of production that past two months has hurt their chances. ARam & Pierre's April hurt our chances, too. BTW - I think the Reds' demise can be linked to the idiotic trade with Washington. I agree with A-ram and Pierre hurt the Cubs. But why is it so hard for everyone to admit that Dunn has been abysmal since August? To say his lack of production didn't effect the Reds chances is puzzling to me.
  19. In a vacuum, Pierre is a fine member of a baseball team. He is rather consistent year to year. He isn't spectacular at anything. A guy with his speed should ideally be a little better at getting on base, but he is what he is and under different circumstances, I would want him back, but... 1. He is likely going to want to sign a multi-year deal and the Cubs are really needing a one-year stop gap to get to Pie. 2. The Cubs already have a lead-off hitter who is as good if not better at getting on base on the roster at the league minimum salary in Ryan Theriot. 3. The Cubs really need SLG% and CF is one of the few positions in which it is available. 4. Players like Andruw Jones, Vernon Wells, Torii Hunter, Mike Cameron and others maybe be available via trade or free agency. Now if the Cubs sign Soriano and want him to play 2B, and Pierre is willing to sign a 1-year deal for an amount that won't prohibit the Cubs from signing a couple good FA starters, then I'm okay with resigning Pierre. But that scenario, just doesn't seem very likely. If a player like Andruw Jones or Vernon Wells could be had, then by all means get them. I'd take Pierre over Cameron or Hunter though. I wouldn't be too locked in on looking for just a one year stopgap in CF. Pie may turn out to be great, who knows. But forgive me if I am a little hesitant in the Cubs actually producing a quality postion playing prospect. They have been few and far between.
  20. I wouldn't mind having him back, honestly. Obviously the offense needs to improve tremendously. But I think that is going to have to come from another position besides CF. With a better offense, I think Pierre would be a great asset. His April and May were awful, as evidenced below. But since then he has played well, putting up a .350+ OBP. April .258/.289 May .226/267 June .283/352 July .345/.380 August .304/.346 Sept .325/.336 202 Hits, 32 Doubles, 13 Triples. 58 SB in 77 Att, 75.3% I'm not expecting a lot of agreement on this issue, but I wouldn't mind having him back. Pie isn't ready. JP will obviously want more than a one year deal, so that will complicate matters as it pertains to Pie. But Felix is still young enough that it isn't a major issue yet. Bomb away :D
  21. Not too sidetrack this, but I have a little more appreciation for Pierre's season than others. April and May he was terrible, but since he has been pretty good.
  22. Those not watching just missed a trendous play by Cedeno
  23. Bo Hart says hello. He should be on the team, but I wouldn't pencil him in as a starter automatically. Most guys don't all of a sudden put up numbers in the major leagues that they never even approached in the minors.
  24. I'm watching, I'll miss the Cubs here pretty soon, sucky season and all.
