  1. Heck yeah! That's one way to make us forget about the loss. This was an important move. I think if they extend Happ or Seiya it will be Happ, in part because he's been a glue guy and will take less money to stay. Seiya is great but gets injured a lot and will command more as a power hitting RFer.
  2. Roster resource also has the ST invite guys Vince Velasquez and Kyle Wright. There's also Grant Kipp, indy ball signing Connor Schultz, KBO signing Charlie Barnes and (when he's back and healthy) Jordan Wicks.
  3. It's tough because Conforto cannot play in the field anymore. Carlson can play all three positions out there. I think an ideal scenario would be Alcantara taking the 4th OF spot at some point. Maybe he doesn't get more than 200 at bats but he can cover all three positions and isn't a liability with the bat. I'm assuming they didn't want to relegate him to bench bat right away and wanna get him some more playing time in Iowa.
  4. That is surprising considering we could've cut other people. And I also don't understand why we're keeping Cowles but giving the bench spot to Kingery. Even if the plan is to just DFA the person after Seiya comes back, we've done it with Cowles multiple times. I get it, it's last minute, end of roster finagling but feels like we have no need for Justin Dean or Cowles or other relievers on the 40 man.
  5. Yeah I think this is it. Carlson makes the team. I don't think Kingery was a serious finalist.
  6. Love it. I know they tried last year. What are we thinking are the terms?
  7. Conforto will be on the OD roster.
  8. Kohl Franklin will never be healthy again. Bummer.
  9. I really want him to succeed but it is not looking great.
  10. Yeah that's my best guess. Alcantara had a slow start to the spring and has an option remaining so he starts in Iowa. Once Conforto signed I assumed he would make the team unless he looked like horsefeathers. And I figured Carlson vs. McCormick would be for the last spot on the bench and Carlson has hit really well. McCormick and Kingery probably the next ones up from Iowa unless they wanna give Alcantara or Triantos an early look.
  11. He was the replacement for Johan Rojas after he was suspended for PEDs. Although you could wonder how Rojas made the team also.
  12. May that thread live forever. Congrats everyone!
  13. I'd have Conrad below Alcantara and Rojas but overall it's not a bad list. We really need some pitchers to step up. Also I was curious to see what kind of bump Ayers would get from the AFL and there you have it.
  14. The Cubs cannot quit Ben Cowles.
  15. I absolutely love Ian Happ and some people need to get over themselves.
  16. Fangraphs talked to Ben Brown about his new two-seamer. Seems like it's looking good so far. He said he learned it from Clay Holmes in the offseason. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/ben-brown-pitch-designed-a-sinker-over-the-offseason
  17. Kinda feels like Conforto and McCormick are gonna make the team barring injury or they look downright awful the next few weeks. McCormick can play all three OF spots and has a plus glove, in addition to the options mentioned above. Conforto has some power and a higher offensive floor than Carlson right now but Carlson is a good option to have in Iowa unless he has an Opening Day opt out.
  18. The Conforto deal makes a little more sense now in terms of bench power but he's never played first base. Even if he and McCormick both make the roster I'd guess some combination of Shaw/Bregman/Mo relieve Busch on days off?
  19. Every time one of these threads comes up.
  20. 20 years later I'll never forgive him. It's not unrealistic that we could've been better with a fully healthy Lee those next couple years, as the injury sapped his power a bit and he probably could've hit 400+ homers. At least that's how teenage me remembers it.
  21. He's been terrible for the last two years. I prefer McCormick as an option, who has also been bad for two years but at least has a decent floor as a good fielder.
  22. Solid B for me. I think If we had added more infield depth and a closer type for the pen, I'd have given an A. But overall I like what we did. I feel better about the team this spring than I did last year.
