  1. PECOTA: 5.44 ERA Bill James: 5.14 CHONE: 5.13 ZIPS: 4.95 I'd say 4.40 is pretty optimistic. I'd love for it to happen, but it's more likely we see a 5-something. Previous to last year he put up ERA's of 4.13 and 3.71 and some other crappy ones. There is reason to believe he could fall inline close to the above numbers this year. no... baseball projections are always dead-on amen to that sarcasm. gut feelings from fans of the team the guy signs with following a good spring training outing are typically much more accurate. Gut feelings. Or just going to carreer #'s and the last few years? what else would you prefer to look at?
  2. so basically, other than being easy to hit he was pretty good? also, he sucked hard in 2002 and 2003. It's not about how many hits you give up. It's about how many runs you give up. ...and runs come from hits and walks (aka whip). Runs are tracked by ERA, not by WHIP. WHIP is a nice little ancillary stat, but ERA is much more important. It's not that different than football. What do you care more about? How many points you gave up or how many yards? and typically a guy who gives up a bunch of hits gives up a bunch of runs. and teams that give up a bunch of yards give up a bunch of points. pitchers and football teams can both get lucky.

  4. Saying "hope I'm wrong" seems like he's giving him a chance to me. you're right. However "So other than sucking in 2002 and 2003". . and "suck at pitching" is not so positive. who said i was being positive about him? i said i hope he does well. listen, he's really pretty much sucked for the better part of the last five years (including sucking especially hard in the most recent season). if you want to pretend that didn't happen, go ahead. if he was on the cardinals right now, i truly doubt you'd have anything positive to say about him. so i'm not going to sit here and pretend i'm excited about him. and me doing that is not going to have any effect on anybody doing anything anywhere. I'm over it. Just forget about it. Be as negative as you want. would you have a positive outlook for marquis if he had signed with the mariners or the cardinals or anyone else in baseball besides the cubs?

  7. so basically, other than being easy to hit he was pretty good? also, he sucked hard in 2002 and 2003. That's nice. So what do you think he'll do this year? suck at pitching. hope i'm wrong. Will you atleast give him a chance this year? So far so good for Marquis. i said i hoped i was wrong. i don't know what else you mean by "give him a chance." by the way, it doesn't matter whether i "give him a chance" or not. me sitting here at my computer and thinking about how bad marquis is going to be is not likely to have an effect on his performance.

  10. it's not that i really care about it...it's just odd. i check the game thread to see how prior's doing and people are cursing, "oh god!"-ing, and just being general drama queens.
  11. where's that from?
  12. i think it's funny that anyone actually gives a [expletive] about spring training games. outside of seeing that guys are healthy, i couldn't care less about the actual games.
  13. horrible. worst thing to ever grace a baseball diamond.
  14. "oh god?" is this a spring training game or game 7 of the world series?
  15. hill and soriano both looked pretty good yesterday. if hill can pitch anything like he did last fall, my rotation looks pretty good. not so excited about this, however...
  16. yeah, i have to drive to illinois for an interview tomorrow, so i'm hoping it's not too bad.
  17. yeah, i was pretty lucky...we didn't lose power here, and the weather conditions never got that bad. we're supposed to get it again tonight.
  18. that would lead to some really mediocre players getting in. Yeah, mediocre like Santo, Rice, Hodges, Wills, Kaat as opposed to players like Mazeroski and Ozzie Smith. Some of the names mentioned in these posts could be enough for the veterans committee to put in 2 per year for the next 3 or 4 years. if they were forced to put two in a year, do you realize the quality of player that would be getting in 10-12 years from now? bret saberhagen would get in.
  19. so we just need some old people to die.
  20. that would lead to some really mediocre players getting in.
  21. i normally don't care about awards and stuff (especially when it involves complete strangers), but, for some reason, i really, really, really hope he makes it.
  22. i like your infield. like i said, i didn't realize rollins and uggla were so productive. it's better than your outfield, which is obviously just [expletive]. :D
  23. i was somewhat surprised at how fast all the OF got gobbled up. i kinda wanted to take DK with my first pick (#3) and then get hawpe with #16. i'm glad i took drew first b/c there was plenty of pitching (much of which will likely be better than DK) to be had with my #16 and #17 picks and not much in the way of OF. i ended up getting a better OF than hawpe (hopefully) and three starters (bush, myers and smoltz) who all have a good shot of being better than DK...of course w/o the three exemptions.
  24. hey, that's me, not HBC! at first glance i was wondering how i got left out. i'm pleasantly surprised with my rotation. i feel like i got three top SP's in the draft today (smoltz, myers and bush). i'm surprised all those guys fell as far as they did, especially considering the new emphasis on pitching points. i definitely have some risky guys in there...sheets, hill, smoltz, bush and papelbon could all very likely get hurt/underachieve...but they could all be top 20 too.
  25. fine. i'm fired as the resident analyst. :D
