i think the possibility that te'o really did get duped is even more enjoyable for me since ND fans have this obnoxious sense of pride about what an esteemed academic institution ND is.

this isn't anything new, is it? but yeah, if he truly didn't know until 12/6 (which i don't think many people believe), i'm not surprised he didn't go public at that time. that's pretty far down on the list of stupid/weird things that he did.

maybe this is a possibility...say te'o tweeted back and forth from time to time with this person thinking she was real. never talked to her on the phone, never asked to skype, never tried to visit her, etc. then after she "died" he exaggerated the extent of their "relationship" for publicity not realizing it was going to blow up in his face because the person never existed. that could explain how he was "fooled" so easily.

for some reason, i had it in my head that this girl was in hawaii the whole time following the accident, while getting leukemia treatment, etc. then i realized she was allegedly in california. i also didn't realize the accident apparently occurred 8 months before she died of cancer. so the love of his life almost dies in a car accident and begins undergoing treatment for leukemia over the span of 8-9 months and te'o doesn't go see her. and apparently the car accident occurs 8 months before she "died of cancer," which means it was in january, which means te'o had nothing but time on his hands after the 2011 football season was over. and he doesn't go visit her. sociopath seems more likely than gullible to me at this point. or [expletive] boyfriend ever. She told him she was in a car accident about 3 months after they started corresponding (email, twitter, phone, whatever). that's not my understanding of the timeline. so in june 2012, she's still recovering from her car accident injuries. she clearly was "dating" te'o by this point, correct?

i think it's the most likely explanation. any other explanation requires him to a schizophrenic or stupid on a braindead level.

west virginia started 0-12 on 3s. then made 9 of their final 12 3s to erase the 18 point deficit they faced with 9 minutes left to tie the game with 10 seconds left. then iowa state got an uncontested 1 footer with 2 seconds left to win. suck it huggins.

right. which is why we know that, at the very least, te'o was lying about something. i mean, he said he met her FACE TO FACE. unless they found an actress to play the role who also happened to look very much like the girl whose facebook photo they later stole, TE'O LIED ABOUT THIS. are you at least willing to admit that, MR? He certainly lied to his parents about meeting her as his dad was quoted in the SB tribune about their meetings in Hawaii. I've asked here, b/c I honestly don't know, whether he lied to the media about meeting her. It's been reported that he gave his number to a woman at the Stanford game in '09 and that he believed that this girl was that same woman. I don't remember seeing Manti quoted saying that he met her in person after she contacted him in 2011. Have you seen that somewhere - a quote from him about meeting her? no, not after 2009 or whatever. just the hawaii stuff (said by his dad apparently) and the stuff about them locking eyes after the stanford game in '09.

the only thing that makes me consider that there is a 0.5% chance of te'o telling some version of the truth is that you have to be a stone cold sociopath to double down on your real grandma actually dying by throwing in the story about your made up girlfriend dying. all jokes aside, the only story that makes even the slightest bit of sense is that he made up the girlfriend story because he is gay and needed to explain why he wasn't knee deep in [expletive] 24 hours a day and the lie just spiraled out of control. because it would be INSANE for someone to spend literally HUNDREDS OF HOURS over 3 years JUST TO [expletive] WITH THIS GUY. and it would be perhaps slightly less insane for te'o just to make up the story for sympathy/PR/attention. the other possibility is that te'o is schizophrenic or something.

Did he ever tell the media he met her? I know his dad did but I don't remember if Manti ever was quoted by the media. Pretty easy to believe he lied to his dad bc he didn't want to admit he'd never met her. I blame Lane Kiffin and it will probably go more smoothly for you if you just join in in the joke-making. i mean real jokes, not lane kiffin ones. And it would be easier for you if you weren't a commie bastard but we all have our crosses to bear I admire you for going down with the ship.

I think that might actually be worse. It would only perpetuate this culture of meathead that there is in sports and make it even more difficult for gay people to come out. The overall media storm would be pretty monumental. His combine is going to be media-obnoxious. It's not necessarily a sports issue. I'm not sure about cultural stigmas of his people, but a gay Mormon at a Catholic university would be a LOT of pressure for someone to deal with. It is a sports issue. The gay world needs their Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson is revered because of his strength and pride. This is not strength and pride. This is shameful and cowardly if he's in on it. well yeah, it'd be TERRIBLE from a gay pride or whatever perspective, but it'd probably be the only way anyone would feel any sympathy for te'o.

my ND fan friend said a similar thing. he also said this was the worst 9 day stretch for any college football program ever. i reminded him how an entire football team died in a plane crash, but he's inconsolable.
