  1. and even then, to call Dye worse than replacement level (or average AAA OF, or whatever) is just false. I don't care how bad his defense is. Up until the second half of last year, when we collapsed after being on his way to what seemed like an easy 40 maybe 50 home run season, Dye has been great ever since joining the White Sox. I dont know what happened that caused him to completely fall off, but I really dont see him as a AAAA player. I doubt he'll get a full time gig at this point, but some team will probably get a good deal on him on a 1 year 2-3 mil deal.
  2. but even at his worst, kosuke was a better option vs RHP than johnson was. (i liked reed johnson btw) I dont know, especially in the 2nd half of '08 when he seemed to spin all the way back to the dugout after every at bat, I would have rather had Ted Lilly, Sean Marshall, or dare I say...Aaron Miles(yes, Im aware he wanst on the team) at the plate instead of him.
  3. Im not a Theriot hater, but if we could sell hi on him, Id be all for it. Even if Castro were to struggle at first, we probably have a balanced enough lineup that we could stand to have him at the 8 spot and earn his lumps.
  4. I dont think anyone ever really saw Reed as anything more than a platoon guy vs. lefties or a late inning defensive sub. there may not have been a lot on this board, there were a ton of stupid cubs fans wanting him to play against righties at several times during his cubs career. Reed Johnson had a lot of support from people I know to become an everyday player. During some of Kosuke's slumps, I recall some on the board wanting Reed to start everyday. In their defense, Im not a Kosuke basher, but when he is in one of his slumps, there arent a lot of guys who I wouldnt rather have come to the plate. As for a lot of Cubs fans supporting Reed as an everyday player, in his short time as a Cub Reed did estblish himself as a "fan favorite", and in those cases, your average fan will look past the fact that hes inept vs. righties. Look at Ryan Theriot. While Im not a Theriot basher or a Theriot lover, I know a lot of people on this board are Theriot bashers, but as far as your average fan goes, hes a fav as well, and many people see him as a Cub for life.

  6. Having a "clubhouse cancer" on your team can affect the performance of other players. Not as much as some people think it does (like blaming a failed season on a single player, for example), but you can't say it's not real. The concept of team chemistry DOES exist. Here we go again with the clubhouse cncer discussion. In Football or Basketball, where everyone on the field or court has to work together as a unit, then MAYBE Id by the clubhouse cancer argeument, but in baseball, I really dont get it. If you dont like a guy, then suddenly you cant hit the ball? If your a shortstop or second baseman, you hate the guy in right field spo much that you make a crap play? In baseball, it really makes 0 sense.
  7. Im just saying, what harm could a minor league deal with an invite do?
  8. I did enjoy Jims time as a Cub, but my favorite Cub who played less than a full season would have to be Kenny Lofton.
  9. Good luck to Jermaine getting more than that elsewhere at this point in the offseason.
  10. I mentioned this in another thread. guys always seem to want to be a Cub, Yankee, Red Sox, or Dodger, and coincidentally, these teams are all known for spending money freely.
  11. Maybe as an everyday player, but more like 20-25. Problem is, with Kouzmanoff aquired to play everyday 3B, and the resigning of Jack Cust, Fox is going to be back to fighting for at bats.
  12. Everyone wants to be a Chicago Cub. Unofrtunately for him, were not the Boston Red Sox who can find a way to sign every available free agent even if they have nowhere to play. Besides, even if we did somehow open up a magical 6th outfield spot, Id rather bring back Reed Johnson.
  13. The countdown was on MLB TV. top 3 were #3: Mike Stanton, #2: Steven Strasberg, #1 Jason Heyward. I was pretty surprised not to see Vitters make the list.
  14. I don't get it. the big spoon.
  15. I tend to question when players say they are "interested" in certain teams that have not expressed interest in them. It often tends to be the same teams, such as the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and coincidentally, they are the same teams that tend to spend money freely on players they dont particularly need. The fact that Jim Hendry especialy likes to give middle relievers big contracts probably had something to do with his interest.
  16. Hed definitely be the Bert of the couple.
  17. Even if Tracy does make the team out of ST, his track record would lead me to believe that theres little chance that he aviods significant DL time. However, could this aquisition make Fontenot trade bait? would we be able to land a solid middle reliever for him? Assumig Tracy makes the team, and we want to keep Fuld, Font could be expendable. That way we start the season with Baker and Theriot at 2B and SS, and Andres Blanco a more than capable backup for either, defensively anyway. And if the need arrises for another MI, we could always call up Bobby Scales, who is more than likely to accept a minor league assignment after hes cut at the end of spring training. We also have Darwin Barney as a plan C, and of course there are the numorous free agent veterans always floating around early in the season.
  18. we could have us a nice lefty mashin' lineup Theriot Byrd Lee Ramirez Soriano Nady Soto Baker P
  19. I predict that we end up grossly overpaying for 3 months of Sheets services in July.
  20. Looks like Tracy has played a bit of outfield and 1B over the years, so that could defintely make him worth while. With Nady on board, it looks like Hoffpauir will start the season in Iowa unless hes traded. the question is who would Tracy replace if he made the team? Fuld is the best backuop center field option we have, and we need 2 backup middle infielders. Id guess that Tracy has one of those deals that if he doesnt make the team by a certain date hes cut loose.
  21. ' No matter how washed up a player is, it always sucks to have a former fan fav sign with a top rival.
