  1. I could see the Indians or Giants kicking the tires, but they'd probably just fall off.
  2. Imagining the negotiations now:
  3. The White Sox have spent the past 2-3 years trying to replicate what they did in 2005- they'd just lost Carlos Lee and Mags, and Frank Thomas had been a non-entity most of that year. They had some quality young guys in Buehrle, Rowand, Garland, and Crede, but nobody thought anything of them as they stocked up on useful but hardly coveted free agent like Pierzynskie, Dye, and that non-celebrated Japanese star guy Iguchi, and traded for the equally useful and hardly coveted Contreras and Podednik. And then Bobby Jenks came out of fat air as an ace closer. And somehow, the stars all aligned to bring them their best year ever. They went into the 2015 offseason with Sale, Quintana, Abreu, and not much else, and added Robertson, Melky, Laroche and Eaton and then Frazier, Latos, and Lawrie was a similar in terms of M.O.
  4. Speaking of Mendy, he is sporting a .270/.322/.454 line with 5 home runs. Though his 55 K's to 14 walks is an eyesore, could be end up being useful? Sooner or later, somebody's going to realize that Tim Federowicz is taking up a roster spot, so maybe he'll get another shot.
  5. Javy, McKinney, a non-Cease low level pitching prospect, and a pair from the Williams/Zastrysny/Rademacher/Young/Taylor Davis/Black/Rivero/Beeler/Alcantara (who sadly lumps in with this lot at this point) aisle for Teharen and Vizcaino. Basically, Javy (who could be a cornerstone in their rebuild) + a big league ready-ish spare part for Teharen/A top 100 prospect and change for Vizcaino. Who hangs up first?
  6. I feel there's an opportunity for a very inappropriate joke here, but it's too early for me to piece it together.
  7. Cubs Futures Team: CF Albert Almora ® 2B Ian Happ (S) RF Eloy Jimenez ® 1B Dan Vogelbach (L) C Willson Contreras ® SS Gleybar Torres ® LF Billy McKinney (L) 3B Jeimer Candelerio (S) Bench EJ Matinez Donnie DeWees Mark Zagunis Victor Caratini Rotation: some mix of Underwood/Cease/Williams/Tseng/Blackburn De La Cruz/Kellogg/Steele/Sands/Miller/Twomey/Sands/horsefeathers pitching Bullpen: Edwards/Concepcion/Pena/Refer to above. Obviously, it's not realistic to expect all of these guys to make it as big leaguers, let alone impact players, let alone Cubs, but I find it rather impressive that we can put together an entire "Futures Team" style roster from our own system out of actual prospects.
  8. Remember that week and a half when we didn't win as many games as we usually do? That kind of sucked a little bit.
  9. Maybe in the sense that I went into the Hall of Fame wearing a Cubs hat when I visited it.
  10. Really too bad about Marlon Byrd. Was a nice late-career comeback after what seemed to be the end when his time with the Red Sox came to an end.
  11. I don't know about you, but I'd like to Bosio the horsefeathers out of Matt Moore.
  12. I'd rather wait and see who survives the two trade deadlines. Best I can do now is whichever of he or Torres survives the trade season will get it or fight for the #2 behind Contreras. Can't not love Eloy's bat, but it's going to be hard for a slugging corner outfielder to overtake an offensively inclined and defensively serviceable shortstop and/or a catcher. And unless we're talking something along the lines Fernandez, Tejeran (yes, I'm aware that one thing is not like the others,) or dare I say, Trout, I'm really hoping that we can hang on the three of them. And considering out limited needs, it's a safe bet that we can.
  13. If James Loney were to have been anything other than a 1st baseman (and not a very good one,) his bat would have taken him a lot further than it has.
  14. Yeah, Ventura had a huge hand in that comeback. Stayed with Robertson for way too long, and Kahnle when it was clear he had little command. Reminds me of a game when Ryan Dempster was closer and something like an 8 run lead evaporated like nothing. I think it was against the Mets. There's just something about bringing in the closer with a large lead that leads to chaos.
  15. Chris Archer already assured me the we lost the Garza trade. Question: if we'd gotten the same as we did out of Matt Garza in a time when the Cubs weren't completely useless, would we be looking at the trade as a loss? On the other side of that coin, Rich Harden gave us an excellent year and a half-ish in a time when it mattered. He did, however, cost us Josh Donaldson (a fact that I'm surprised how many Cubs fans are completely unaware of.) Was that trade a loss? And I get that Archer was more more well regarded than Donaldson at the time, but he was far from a sure thing. And we were able to salvage Kyle Hendricks out of Garza. What does sting a bit is that (allegedly) it was our choice between Archer and Trey McNutt, and we opted to keep Trey.
  16. If you're willing to count Black, I'd include Paniagua. Fair enough. I'd heard his velo had dropped. Maybe I'm mistaken. LOL, these are the types we'd be getting exciting over in the Hendry era. This isn't to say that they don't have their value, but it's nice to view them as guys who could be of service at some point rather than relying on them for the future.
  17. That was the best game ever that was a bloop away from being the worst game ever. As painful as it was, the fact that it shredded the souls of the Cards and their fans makes it all worthwhile.
  18. If we lose this horsefeathers, I say walk away and give Ski, Rodon Fan, and the like the keys to whats left of game thread to do as they see fit. Because we'll all be feeling what they're saying.
  19. So this is the part where Rondon doesn't implode and pitches a quick inning and we leave this hell hole. Right?
  20. Not sure what the hang up is. I'm not saying they're the same guy, but they're both young, stud pitchers with multiple years of team control. Fernandez is certainly the sexier option, but he hasn't pitched a full season since 2013. Teharen has, and some quite good ones. So yeah, one guy could potentially be a legend whereas the other is more likely to end up very good, but my point is I'd take either. Or both. Teheran wouldn't cost anything resembling the package Fernandez would Precisely. But my point remains that either would cost multiple top prospects, Jimenez being among them. And it's a price I'd pay for either. Fernandez would simply cost a lot more of them. More importantly, Teheran is a realistic target. Fernandez is more of a pipe dream that we're going go share with 28 other teams. And as long as he's healthy and in a Marlins uniform, there will be no shortage of tumors linking them to all.
  21. So Jake has to have is one bad start over the course of a year against these ass holes?
  22. WTF, Jake. I know that giving up runs is something that other pitchers do from time to time, but you're not other pitchers. For shame.
