  1. Not only are the Astros the worst team in baseball, but they also have one of the 4 worst farm systems in baseball, although the Pence trade might have helped them out there. Still, they have a long way to go, and comparing them to the Cubs is depressing and wrong.
  2. Why in the hello would you post that? Im not condoning it, just remembering when he first came to town and venders were selling those shirts like it was a good idea, much like the Pujols Mows my Lawn nonsense. I think even Clark Street Sports, which is more mainstream of a store had them.
  3. Vitters 3-4 with an HR. Jackson 2-3 with an HR and...thats about it.
  4. Some good old fashioned political incorectness for the road. Mod Edit: Image put in spoiler tags because really, what's the point of this?
  5. Do you ever get tired of being wrong? i think it's more that he likes being contrarian - taking positions that others will disagree with - because he's bored. Being anti-instant replay is not exactly a contrarian position. Yes, I'd rather let the moment stand than get the call right with a several-minute, mood-killing delay. Even when its the game winning play in a game between 2 contenders? Obviously, you dont want to have it for every called ball/strike or check swing, but when it comes to run scoring plays, its very important to get it right. Like in football, give each manager a certain amount of challenges.
  6. If the Rockies were interested, Id be willing to ship Colvin or DeWitt for Stewart straight up, but nothing of any real value.
  7. I doubt casual fans could do that. Even casual fans care about winning or losing and their excitement peaks and valleys based on that. The difference is, the casual fans have long erased the 2011 Cubs from their memories and would not be posting in meaningless game threads like this one. Some do though, mainly kids. I remember when I was a kid at a game, rarely did I have any idea what place the team was in, and as long as they won the game, I was happy.
  8. This just in, Aramis Ramirez to either be traded or not be traded. Seriously, this better mean hes in the 2012 plans.
  9. Is Paul Hoilman someone we should expect things from? Hes only 40 games into his pro career, and already seems to have lot more patience than the rest of our interchangeable, power hitting 1B prospects.
  10. I completely forgot about Jason Schmidt. That is one bullet the Cubs managed to avoid. A total disaster of a contract. We had a looooot of interest in Zito back in that offseason as well before we "settled" for Ted Lilly.
  11. Not a good reference on whether the injury affected his power. He hasnt hit more than 3 home runs in a season since. I know we've been making fun of the Pierre comparison, but I'd gladly take a Pierre type career from Szczur. He had some pretty good peak years in the early 2000's. If Tony Campana or Evan Crawford were to become Juan Pierre, Id be thrilled. If Matt Szczur were to become Juan Pierre, Id be dissapointed.
  12. Considering they're 2 games back with a pile of crap at 3B, Id ask for 1 of their top 5 and another of their top 10-15. With Pena, we need to just get whatever we can. With Aramis, were in the drivers seat.
  13. Not a good reference on whether the injury affected his power. He hasnt hit more than 3 home runs in a season since.
  14. Its this time of year when I envy the "casual fans" who can enjoy a game while 15 games back as much as they would in the thick of a pennant race.
  15. I don't disagree, but would point out that they are not very far from being able to afford all 3. It wouldn't take seismic changes to get all 3, and you have to keep in mind they're paying 33 million for SP production(Dempster, Z) they could replace for far less the following season. From my calculations they're 7-10 million short even after declining Samardzija's option, not re-signing Wood, and going with minimum salary players for the bench and most of the bullpen. That's a lot of extra money to shed. They could trade Byrd to do it, but they have nobody to replace him. I suppose they could do some backloading.
  16. Whatever. as far as Im concerned, if Aramis is a Cub in Spetember, he needs to be a Cub in April.
  17. If we can afford Aramis, Fielder and Wilson, we can certainly afford Cuddyer, Fielder, and Wilson. This being said, I dont think theres a reason to. I doubt we'll move Soriano for enough to make it worth while, and the 2012 opening day OF should be Soriano, Jackson, and Byrd with Campana and Colvin as the 4th and 5th, maybe replace Colvin with Montanez or even Ty Wright if Colvin continues to be truely awful.
  18. To be honest, when you give a player the kind of contract Kosuke got, those are the types of numbers you should be expecting and in his first month or so, of pretty much every season, it really looked like those were the kind of numbers it looked like wed get. Maybe .280/.400/.450 would have been more realistic.
  19. If there were to be only 2 guys on the current 25 man roster that they Cubs decided to keep around long term, Castro and Garza would be my picks, no question with Soto 3rd.
  20. Penalver went 3-3 with 2 walks, 3 runs, 1SB/1CS. His line on the season is up to .283/.392/.353. This type of nonsense has no business in the Cubs organization. Hopefully they'll learn to swing a bit more freely as they progress,
  21. Im all for keeping Aramis, but it isnt our decision, and if the powers that be have already decided hes not in the future plans, he really needs to be traded if he'll accept it, because hes a guy we should be able to score a legit top prospect for, maybe top 50.
  22. Huh, who'd have thought, the Cubs got Bryce Harper. I definitely like his take on Abreu, especially comparing him to a young Vlad Guerrero.
  23. The Gillick talk makes me very hopeful, for the simple fact that he likely wpuldnt come out of retirement in any capacity to work with a team in full rebuild that he didn't feel had a chance to win. Remember, whoever is the manager nag GM when the Cubs finally win it all wins some great bragging rights.
  24. If we do let Aram go, and stick with internal options at 3rd, I wonder if there would be room in the budget for Michael Cuddyer in addition to Fielder and Wilson, but as I've said before, it's not realistic to think that we'll be able to go out and nab 3 of the top 5 free agents even if we do have the money.
