  1. Then in reality, your not in fact a Cubs fan , you simply want the Pirates to lose.
  2. Ever see the episode of the Simpsons where Homers long lost rich and successful brother comes to town, and Homers bufoonery ends up costing him everything? Something like that.
  3. So what? There's this underlying tone of "playoffs or bust" when talking about 2012. The key is showing significant improvement from this year. If they end up only being .500, great. They'll have money to build with for 2013, too. It's not like the 2012 team will be some kind of explicit barometer as to how the team will play for the next few years. This. While it can happen, its not often that a team goes from being as awful as the Cubs are now straight to a deep playoff run, but keep in mind, Fielder and Wilson would be signing deals past 2012. With them in the mix, the '12 team would be at least .500, and likely contenders. In the next 2 years, between Dempster, Z, and Soriano, a LOT of money comes off the books to keep building. With Fielder, Castro, Garza, Wilson, Soto, Cashner, and hopefully some of our current prospects, as well as whatever we use the Sori/Z/Demp money for, say Kemp or Ethier and another solid SP, we'd definitely have the building blocks for a team that contend long term.
  4. Not often when you see a guy get demoted 2 levels in a season, is it?
  5. That much I knew. Like I said, otherwise, it would be too easy for teams to get around ill advised NTCs. Side note: I havnt been watching many games lately, so I didnt realised how close Soriano was to reverting to his 2009 self. Yikes. At this point, the only trade match I could imagine would be for Barry Zito, and while his contract is equally bad, maybe a bit worse, his 18 mil for '14 has a 7 mil team buyout. Again, it wouldnt be a pretty pickup, especially considering that Zitos been awful in one of the better pitchers parks in the league, but thats the only contract in baseball I could imagine tradeable for Sorianos.
  6. Not quite sure exactly how this whole thing works. -Once a player is claimed by another team, they have such and such time to work out a deal, or the original team can simply unload the player and the contract on the other team, or they can pull the player off waivers this much I know. However, since its after the trade deadline, am I correct in assuming they can only trade for a player who isnt on the other teams 40 man roster or one who has also cleared waivers? -Completely hypothetical example, say Adam Dunn and Alfonso Soriano both clear waivers, are the Cubs and Sox then free to go ahead and trade them for one another, however, if Soriano clears waivers, he then cant be traded for someone who hasnt been exposed to waivers? Also, I know that NTCs are still valid, or teams would use that loophole more often.
  7. None of this information has been confirmed, either. We need to be cautious. However, between this draft, the potential 2012 top 5 draft pick, the emergence of legitimately intriguing Latin American position prospects in the DSL and AZL, and the possibility that one of the high ceiling arms in Peoria/Boise has a breakout season next year, there is reason for optimism for this farm system going forward. Don't forget potential breakouts from guys who didn't break out (or completely break out) in 2011 like McNutt, Simpson, Jae Hoon Ha, and Matt Szczur. I like the Schlect and Jensen confirmed signings. DeVoss also has been pretty exciting for Boise. I might go as far as to call Szczurs season a breakout. He was steller for Peoria. and he seems to be coming around for Daytona. McNutt had his breakout last year, and was on rout to continuing it until he was sidelined.
  8. Do we have enough in the kitty to sign 2 of the following 3...? Wainright - hits FA if the Cards don't excecise his $9M/$12M option CC Sabathia - opts out of contract CJ Wilson - FA OK, I'll put down the crack pipe now. Probably, but are you sticking with the current offense/defense? Cause the team will still suck, it will just be low scoring suck. Losing games 3-2 instead of 6-4 won't help them get to 90 wins. They need help on offense as much as defense. I dont know, if we had a rotation of 2 of those 3, plus Garza, Demp, and Z, it could make up for the offense. Look at the Giants. Obviously, their park is a huge factor, but that rotation would be pretty tough. The offense would probably line up like: Jackson CF, Castro SS, Byrd RF, Pena 1B, Soto C, Soriano LF, Baker/Flaherty/whatever 3B, Barney 2B, which may look awful, but if they could generate 3-4 runs per game, that might be all they need.
  9. Any chance we could end up with the rotation of: Darvish Wilson Garza Demp/Z Z/Cashner Probably not, but it would be awesome.
  10. Do you mean 2 years on top of the option? I'd rather not commit to 3 years for Ramirez, and I don't see any way he signs a reasonable 1 year extension on top of his option. I'd consider signing him to a 2 year deal if he declines the option, but it probably wouldn't make sense for him. Its not in ARams hands, all in the Cubs. 2011 was a player option. 2012 is a team option.
  11. If we take Fielder from the Brewers, we'll be better than the Brewers. If the Cards lose Pujols, we'll be much better than them. Even if they retain him, they likely wont be any better than they are this year. If we can manage to sign Fielder and Wilson, wed be the division favs. Id love to add Ramirez to that mix if possible. As for making us good enough to win it all, there are always moves to be made in the summer. The 2012 Cardinals minus Pujols is a better team than the 2012 Cubs, other moves not withstanding. Likewise for the Brewers minus Fielder. I must be alone here. The Cubs are absolutely brutal and I honestly don't see an end in sight until there are a LOT of changes. You really dont have much faith in this team then. Wilson, Garza, Demp, Z, Cashner would be a very good rotation. Brewers minus Fielder is likely something like Gomez/Morgan Weeks Braun Hart Gamel McGhee LuCroy ? SS Cubs w/ Fielder Jackson Castro Byrd(cant think of anyone else) Fielder Soto Soriano ? 3B Barney Cubs w/ Fielder+Ram Jackson Castro Aram Fielder Byrd Soto Soriano Barney

  13. Because hes bad. Wasn't the whole point of trading Fukudome was so Colvin could get everyday at bats up here? I agree he's bad but we need to see what we have in him these next two months. The whole point of trading Fukudome was trading Fukudome. Personally, I think they just need to get on with it and promote Jackson for CF and move Byrd to RF, because thats the likely configuration next year.
  14. I dont know how seriously they should be taken as a contender when their 4-5 hitters were aquired through dumpster diving for has beens.
  15. Now who wasnt strong was Jay Jackson. Ill be surprised if the protect him from the Rule 5 next year.
  16. When is the signing deadline anyway? This thread may be the last chance for any good news on this awful season.
  17. All we can do at this point is hope that this was Hendrys doing and not Ricketts.
  18. Wrong. They'll look like an OLDER version of the 2011 Cubs. Either that, or it will look like a non contenders mid September roster all season long. Not sure which is worse.
  19. Michael Bourn to Atlanta for 4 prospects: Jordan Schafer, Brett Oberholtzer, Paul Clemans, and Juan Abreu.
  20. I get the sinking feeling that the 2012 Cubs will look very similar to the 2011 Cubs, maybe with some version of Jeromy Burnitz or if were lucky, Jacque Jones added to the mix.
  21. All I can think of is that other teams are looking only at his AVG. And not his OBP and occasional home run outbursts. Sure, he's a great 1B, but if a team already has 1, as most contenders do that's irrelevant. I know The Giants could use an upgrade over Aubrey Huff, but maybe they don't see Pena as enough of one, which is also a bit depressing in it's own.
  22. well its certainly a concern, now. I'm hoping the Ricketts are extremely upset with Hendry and have tied his hands until they can find a capable gm to fix this teams problems. My guess is that this is not the case however. Not allowing Hendry to trade guys you don't plan to bring back would be a terrible decision by Ricketts. My biggest concern is that Ricketts won't approve pursuing Fielder/Pujols - and that would be an indictment of him. And this, we definitely agree upon.
