  1. If Ramirez were to test the open market, I think that someone would be willing to offer him something along the lines of 3/40-45+incentives considering the FA market and general lack of offensive 3Bs in general.
  2. How is LaHair a prospect but Colvin isnt? Id take Colvin easily over Shelley Duncan/Micah H 2.0, terrible year be damned. read it again.
  3. he's 1st in outs made 1st in errors 5th in double plays grounded into. also 1st in hits 3rd in BA 4th in triples.
  4. Please, no more posts about LaHair. Let's just all agree he should be sent to a nice farm upstate and never heard from again once this season ends. Man, you really hate the guy at a Jeff H level. Just out of curiosity, why? If he got a roster spot, he wouldn't really be taking it from an actual prospect, just someone like Colvin, Montanez, or a 38 year old journeyman. Remember, there was a time when we carried both Daryl Ward and Cliff Floyd. I believe Craig Monroe was on that same team for a little while. We can make room for a guy who might be a solid lefty off the bench.
  5. Again, I really have no problem with Lahair on the bench, I see no harm in giving him a spot as a bench bat rather than pay for another Cliff Floyd. Worse that can happen is he sucks, and he's gone by June. I just can't imagine anyone wanting him as the starting 1B as a viable alternative to Fielder or Pujols.
  6. With the Rays surging and 3 gamed behind the Red Sox for the WC, it's possible that the Red Sox miss out on the post season this year. I wonder if this would have any effect on how the Red Sox proceed when it comes to Epsteins future. Obviously, they wouldn't fire him, but with their pay role and expectations, 2 consecutive missed post seasons might be enough to let him consider other options and give Cherington a shot. It certainly wouldn't be a good time to discuss massive extension with them. All other motivations aside, replacing the the Yankees, Rays, and Jays with the Cardinals, Brewers, and Reds could be a factor for him.
  7. Heres the latest on Aramis. Nothing earth shattering. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a 2-3 year deal at a home town discount as long as it means that they plan on picking up some additional pieces to win in the next year or two, otherwise, it's a waste as the team won't be contending in the time he's here. Sounds like he's more concerned with years than money at this point. Really only the article addresses the money aspect. Would he do a 2/20 or 3/27 with us? Would you give it to him? We should be so lucky to get him at 2/20 and I would probably do 3/27 without much hesitation. If he wasn't so lazy and preoccupied with roosters, he'd hunt you down and laugh in your face. 3/35 might be plausable, and that's with added incentives. Keep in mind, 3B was once a big offensive positon, but we're seeing a lot of weak bats there now. Ramirez would generate a lot of interest. Beyond Fielder, Pujols, and to a lesser extent, Reyes and Beltran, this is a very weak FA class, and while most teams are set at 1B, a lot could use a 3B upgrade. He could also interest a lot of AL teams as he's closer to his DH years than Fielder and Pujols.
  8. I don't know about this. I wouldn't be opposed as him being stretched out as a long man and emergency starter, he couldn't be worse than Russell was. However, I don't see a reason for him to be immediately put in the rotation. With Garza, Dempster, Cashner, and Wells, there's 4 right there, although I wouldn't be opposed to trading Wells at this point if anyone is interested. I didnt use the phrase "sell high", because I think that Wells is at the is what he's going to be stage in his career, a solid 4 starter or above average 5 starter. Who knows what will happen with Z, but I can't imagine it being something that will make any of us happy. Regardless, there is a big need to somehow pick up another front end starter, as close to an ace as we can find. There's also Jay Jackson as an option for the back end, and maybe McNutt or even Struck arent too far away from being decent options. Sharks been good out of the pen, but when looking to upgrade the rotation, we're going to have to look outside the organization.
  10. If there was anyone out there left who thought that a guy having his minor league breakthrough in his late 20's should be given consideration as anything other than a 4th outfielder for next year, they clearly forgot about Hoffpauir and Fox. I'm not going to lie through, I really thought we had something with Colvin last year do to his age and draft status.
  11. I bet a lot of people have forgotten that Phil Nevin was a Cub 5 years ago.
  12. But hopefully less gambling debts.
  13. Apparently, The Rays called up Russ Canzler yesterday.
  14. God [expletive] damn it, it's already started. This is going to end up giving me an aneurysm between now and next year.
  15. If the Cubs aren't going to roster him this winter then they shouldn't roster him now. Rostering him and then de-rostering him makes it more likely to lose him than exposing him to the Rule 5 draft. Why would the de-roster him? Just roster him now and keep him on the roster. Whats the worst that can happen, he takes a roster spot from Justin Berg/John Grabow/Rodrigo Lopez/Ramon Ortiz/Esmailen Caridad?
  16. You were saying? Hopefully this lead is big enough to hold off the awfullness that is Rodrigo Lopez.
  17. Heres a name that hasn't come up at all in talks, and for good reasons: Justin Morneau. He's had an awful season, mostly due to the concussion he suffered last year, but he's going to be a FA in 2014, and the Twins don't look like they'll be going anywhere anytime soon, although they always seem to resurge, but I wonder if they'd be willing to move him and how much it would cost. Very doubtful, but still.
  18. I didnt realise that DeWitt (.261/.301/.420) was having an all around better season than Baker (.270/.299/.378). Bakers really starting to look like a non tender candidate with LeMahieu and Flaherty coming up.
  19. They have 2 very good arms behind Verlander in Fister (huh huh....Fister) and Scherzer. Zambrano, however might be a very good pickup for them. I think that they have a 2-3 year window where they can just dominate the AL Central, depending on what becomes of the Royals youngsters and how long it takes them to do so. Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, and Z would be a great rotation to have behind a strong offense, in which Miggy, V Mart, Avila, Boesch, and Jackson are all under team control through at least 2016(Miggy and V 2015), and Young and Peralta through next year.
  20. Rodrigo Lopez has no business being on the mound. Jay Jackson should have gotten a 4 start audition starting at Lopezes last start. They'll have to either roster him or expose him to the Rule 5 anyway, so why not just call him up and let the flotsam like Lopez, Ortiz, and Grabow just go away?
  21. Assuming that the organization has already decided that Z is not a part of the future, every team in the league is aware of the situation. Are there teams who would want him? Sure, but they'll give up as little as possible. If the Marlins are really done with Morrison, he'd be a hell of a lot better return than another Carlos Silva type.
  22. I would love that. Even if we miss out on Epstein, this means Ricketts is ready to spend. I'm sure he knows that if Epstein were to jump ship, it wouldnt be to spend 4-5 years building a team, it would be to build a winner in the next year or 2. Probably similar to the '06/'07 offseason with better decisions. And I wonder how much resistance that the Red Sox would even put up. They already have a team built to win now and the next several years, and if Epstein left town, they already have his heir apparent in Cherington. Even if he wasn't their guy, they'd still have their pick of the litter to replace him. Damn you not so cautious optimism. Good points Well some say that Epstein is leaking interest in the Cubs as leverage to get a new contract, so it will be interesting to see what happens if the Red Sox call his bluff. He may not have legitimate interest in the Cubs but if the Red Sox basically tell him they are going with Cherington, he'll have no choice. Doubt it would actually go down that way, but if Epstein plays his cards the wrong way, it wouldn't shock me. I'd have to think that Epstein is at the point where the glory of ending 2 of baseballs 3 biggest title droughts(Kenny Williams already ended #2) would be more important than the money, especially if the amounts are similar.
