Might not be the craziest thing in the world. They'd only get 1 start out of him this year, but then they'd have a very solid 3-4 starter for next year with potential 2 starter or even ace stuff with a very weak FA SP class coming up, plus, it will be a contract year for Z, so if there's ever a time he'd get back to his old form, it would be next year.

I think that is a whole bunch of nonsense. Soriano is a bad baseball player in a mediocre lineup. He should expect to have to move around. In his case, the vast majority of his time has been in the 6th or 7th hole, which are virtually indistinguishable from a player's perspective. Being a 5/6/7 hitter isn't like he's going from 1/4/8. He just can't hit. No excuses about where in the order. Unbelievable. It's like if you say anything beyond trashing the guy certain people here assume you're praising his hitting ability. What it comes down to is that he's simply not very good, however, he's not eat 50 some mil bad. If he can still hit some home runs and hit lefties, if you're not going to get anything at all in return, may as well just keep him as a platoon guy or bench bat. If it comes to a point where he's blocking a better option, or a better option becomes available through trade, then they can consider eating the rest of his salary, but as of now, theres really no point in eating all that money to give a spot to Reed Johnson or Lou Montanez.

Evem if we didn't get Fielder or Pujols, I think that a lineup of Jackson Castro Ramirez Pena Ethier Soriano Soto Barney/Flaherty/LeMa/DeWitt/Baker Would be able to contend, assuming they had a rotation of Garza, Wilson, Dempster, Zambrano, and Casher.

I remember when he came over, he said he didn't feel comfortable in the heart of the lineup. Well, that should have been the first red flag not to give him the kind of money usually reserved for heart of the lineup type hitters. He insisted in hitting leadoff, which was OK before his legs gave out. Now, he's basically a 6-7 type hitter. Soriano probably wouldnt be any worse of an option at the 5 spot than anyone else we have.

I believe his velocity is down this year. I could be wrong though. It has been (though it was back up today). Yeah, down 2.3 mph on average from last year. If that's the case, he could be injured, in which case he should have been shut down over a month ago.

Is Carlos Marmol really any different than he has been in the past of have hitters just stopped swinging as much?

I know his contract doesn't have an opt out clause, but I'm sure whoever the next GM is, he'll be willing to revise it to include one. Spoiler alert: it wouldn't be exercised.

Because Ricketts' words seem to indicate that, at best, the payroll will be staying about the same and any extra money goes into the farm system for the immediate future. I think it all comes down to how much the bump is. The question isn't whether or not they can afford it; it's whether or not the Ricketts are willing to spend. It also comes down to the GM. The money is there, Ricketts has pretty much said it, but it depends on the GMs MO. I can't imagine a new GM coming into a major market team with plenty of available money and not wanting to spend a decent chunk of it on the right guys.

I think they would for Fielder or Pujols, however, Wilson could end up with a bidding war and a bit more money than he's worth. he's the best FA SP out there, and has been pitching in one of the most hitter friendly parks in baseball, however, a lot of teams are going to be interested and there are always going to be more teams in need of a SP than a 1B. With Pujols or Fielder, it could be easier to blow the competiton out of the water, especially when they might not have an immediate need at 1B, but for teams in need of SP, that's not always the case. Also, remember, John Danks, Sean Marcum, Zach Greinke, and probably one of Matt Cain and Tim LIncecum will be FAs after next year, as well as a few other interesting options like Scott Baker and Ervin Santana. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the same opening day rotation we started out this year, including Big Z with with a beefed up offense.

After last nights game, of all Cubs regulars, Carlos Pena has the 2nd lowest BA behind Soto but is tied for 1st with Aramis in OBP. Maybe that's more common than I think, but it sounds like an interesting stat.

I wonder what it would take to get Ethier. Say we did get Fielder and Wilson, Ethier would be a great complimentry piece, and then we could resign him the next offseason. He wouldn't be cheap in terms of prospects or players however.

That's not a bad thing though. The Rays and The Blue Jays are both very good teams and are usually on the outside looking in because they happen to share a time zone with Boston and New York. -
Interesting concept, but not a fan of a 1 game playoff.

Soto needs a rest sometime, and it's not like we have a younger guy with some potential who deserves a look. You would rather see Hill than Clevenger? And Soto really needs a rest with 6 games left in the season when they had an off day yesterday? I guess I was too lazy for the green font. I'd rather see my mother in law behind the plate than Hill. There's no reason not to give Clevenger a few starts down the stretch.

1998 was still the most fun I've ever had being a Cubs fan. I don't know, I liked 2008 an awful lot. I also liked the 2003 dogfight to the end. -
That seems plausible. It seems like the franchise is just about ready to give up on Guthrie. Red Sox are desperate for pitching; just tried to pry Chris Capuano away from the Mets. They'd probably insist we take Lackey from them, though. The Red Sox want pitching now, as a 1 week rental basically. not necessarily long term. However, if they were interested, I'd be all for a Beckett/Lackey swap. Of course if Z isn't too keen on the wrath of the boo birds, Bostons probably not the ideal spot.
