  1. It strikes me like this years team, if they'd just had that 1 big bat in the lineup, things could have been quite different. Lee would have been that big bat, and Furcal would have added a great #2 hitter. Imagine if Lee had done anything close to what he did the previous year and added it to Ramirez .290/.912 season, plus Furcals numbers. Murton and Barrett both had OPS in the .800s. With this and decent pitching, it could have been a whole different story.
  2. Actually, Hendry's big plan for the 2006 season was supposedly to snag both Pierre and Furcal. The biggest change with all of that would have been, obviously, that he wouldn't have broken Lee's wrist. It was only 58 PA, but Lee was already off to a monster start in 2006, seemingly following up his awesome 2005. Furcal ended up having one of his most productive years offensively that season, too. I'd like to think things would have played out differently if Furcal had been signed, but man, that 2006 team REALLY sucked. I don't think having him and Super D-Lee would have even gotten them to .500. I don't know, that is an interesting theory. Do we still have Jacque Jones, who had a pretty good year? say the lineup was Pierre CF Furcal SS Lee 1B Aramis(who also had a great year) 3B Jones RF some combination of Walker, Murton, and Barrett, all 3 of whom had solid years rounding it out. Granted, the pitching was pretty rough, but while we're playing what if, say Mark Prior was able to return at full strength? Maybe Woody? The team could have contended enough so to make a midseason trade to fill any holes. In this world, Soriano may never have been signed the following winter. I like this world.
  3. One guy said something like that, and he was clearly joking because he said we'd give up Garza and Castro.
  4. We get it, Halladays amazing, but with over 100 pitches, is it really necessary to have him throw a CG with a 6 run lead?
  5. Please let this happen. Granted, as far as home grown talent goes, we don't have what the Red Sox had for Theo to build around, but what I would really like is that the hiring would signify Ricketts willingness to spend, as there's no way that Epstein would walk away from Boston where he had an open checkbook for a mess of a team that's unwilling to let him do whatever he wants to do to fix it.
  6. Just going by guys who are on the 40 man but not the big league roster, could Smit and Maine be amongs the mystery men? Maybe Schlitter, but I dont remember exactly when he was returned to us.
  7. I can think of one St. Louis Cardinals middle infielder who strongly disagrees with this statement.
  8. Is Reaggins an option? He's resigned from the Angels job, but will reportedly remain on as a special assistant. The Vernon Wells trade will always be a blemish on his record, and the Tori Hunter contract won't help his legacy either, but one the plus side, he was wise enough to let John Lacky and Chone Figgins go without much of a fight. He's had a pretty successful run overall.
  9. My dad has always been a Yankees fan. My first baseball games were Yankees games, the Reggie Jackson era. Then in the fatefull fall of 1984 my grandmother leam me astray when we were watching the NLCS. When all was said and done, it was the first time I remember seeing an adult cry. She's now 90 some years old and has seen as many championships as myself and my 1 year old daughter. My dad has enjoyed multiple.
  10. Lets do what the White Sox did and trade for him, and give the Sox Soriano straight up. The question is, when trading for a GM, who are you striking the deal with? Maybe he'll trade himself to the Cubs for Soriano, Zambrano and their full contracts and send A Gon and Lester with him. I'm not sure Boston's ownership would sign off on that. Fine, we'll send em Colvin too.

  12. refresh my memory, what was his pursuit of Crawford like? The same way most big name free agents are pursued Theo: So Carl, how to you feel about money. Carl: I'm a big fan Theo: Welcome to the Boston Red Sox.
  13. Bigger name guys like Dusty Baker and Lou Pinealla.
  14. And this guy is paid actual money to analyze and write about baseball? Good grief.
  15. He was only .500 on the year. Your kidding, right?
  16. Let me guess: Baker, LeMahieu, Barney, and Dewitt across the infield with Hill at C.
  17. Who on earth would call Garza a C or D? Stupid Cubs fans.
  18. Much like all other offseason decisions, it will come down to the new GM. But what GM would keep him as manager? If you know he's not coming back next year and you know no GM would want him as manager, why delay the inevitable? Unless, Ricketts plans to let him finish out his contract. Im not saying that will happen, just speculation on my part. He doesn't know. Besides, I think that if, or hopefully when they relieve him of his managerial duties he'll be offered another position within the organization. Maybe even his old 3B coaching job or bench coach.

  20. did she talk about any specific free agents by name? since she's an employee of the cubs, maybe she's not allowed to discuss the potential signing of players who are currently under contract with other clubs? Until we have a GM, nobody knows who we're pursuing, because there's nobody in place to pursue them. Even if there were, they couldn't be openly pursuing them until 5 days after the World Series ends. It's ok for a sports reporter to speculate since she won't be going after anyone. It was just sort of odd to see no mention of the two best FAs. That's somtimes how teams get the word out. She speculated that Colvin, LaHair, or Pena could be the Cubs 1st sacker. I don't know if she's employed by the Cubs or MLB though. Her boss could make the difference. They can speculate all they want, but the point is, it's not a reason for us to think that Pujols or Fielder arent in our plans. It's not like Ricketts is using Muskat as a muse to his GM candidates.
  21. I'd love to have him, but if the bolded is true, I doubt we'd be able to get both he and Epstein. Still, it's worth a shot to let them build for us what they built there. I'd love both, but if it comes down to either or, I'd take Epstein all the way.

  23. As I always say, it's not all about the money thrown around, it's what you have. The Red Sox have thrown around some big money on big players. Many of whom worked out very well for them, others, not so much. However, they also happened to produce the likes of Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youklis, Jacoby Ellsburry, John Lester, Clay Buchholtz, and last nights man of the hour, Jonathon Papelbon. They were also able to use other top farm hands to aquire players like Josh Beckett and Adrian Gonzalez. We don't produce such players, certainly not all at once. What it comes down to is that we may have the money for Epstein to throw around, but we'll need more than that.
  24. According to this post in the JAD Forum, it looks like the Cubs got the 6th pick (I'm not sure how accurate that is): If teams finish tied, the tiebreaker is final record from the previous year. So KC is 5th, Cubs 6th, and San Diego 7th. We really shouldn't be finishing the season tied with the Royals and Padres, but here we are.
